Jurnal Indonesia Studi Moderasi Beragama (JISMB) [English: Indonesian Journal of Religious Moderation Studies] (Online ISSN 3063-5020 - Print 3063-6418) is a peer-reviewed, open-access academic journal dedicated to advancing and disseminating state-of-the-art knowledge in the field of religious moderation. Abstract

Nowadays, many new radical and separatist ideologies are a challenge for the Indonesian people. The reality of religious radicalism in Indonesia is increasingly troubling, especially after the reformation. The purpose of the research is to reveal pesantren education in actualizing the values of Pancasila through religious moderation in the Pesantren of Bengkulu City. This type of descriptive qualitative research is used to examine how pesantren teach santri (students) to live the values of civil society through religious moderation. The results of research on pesantren education in actualizing the values of Pancasila through religious moderation are that moderation education in the learning curriculum of Islamic boarding schools can be one way to maintain the values contained in Pancasila. In addition to the existence of religious moderation education, other spiritual activities can also shape human moral personality so that it can become a harmonious and peaceful being. The contribution of this research is as a novelty and enrichment material both theoretically and practically related to the urgency of pesantren education in actualizing Pancasila values through religious moderation.

Abstract

The practice of religious values and teachings should ideally be carried out not only to fulfill the interests of its adherents but can have positive implications for adherents of other religions, in the framework of building strong social ties in the context of national life. This research aims to find out the values of religious moderation contained in it and the opportunities and challenges in welcoming the current era of modernity. The research method uses a literature study. The research data comes from research results that have been conducted and published in national online journals. The analysis method used is content analysis. The results showed that there are 9 values of religious moderation in Islam including (1) tawassuth; (2) I'tidal; (3) Tasamuh; (4); Shura; (5) Ishlah; (6) Qudwah; (7) Muwathanah; (8), Al-La'unf; (9) I'tibar Al-Urf. The results showed that Islam obliges its people to always maintain security and promote the prosperity of their country, not to destroy it. The contribution of this research is as novelty and scientific information regarding the strengthening and challenges of religious moderation in Indonesia: Toward a Moderate Society.

Abstract

Pluralism is one of the most hotly debated themes today, especially among religious communities. Religious pluralism has a very sensitive potential to create conflict. The purpose of this study is to determine how much the level of tolerance interaction that exists in Jember Regency between religious communities and the impact of existing tolerance. The research method used descriptive qualitative. The data collection process uses three techniques, namely observation, interviews, and documentation. For data analysis techniques in this study, the author will use three streams of data acquisition, including (1) data reduction; (2) data display; (3) conclusion drawing/verification. The results of the research obtained the conclusion that the people of Jember Regency are united to create harmony and tolerance in religious life because according to them, they have in common as human beings. The contribution of this research is as a discourse and information for readers and academics related to the role of solidarity that fosters tolerance in religious life through religious moderation.

Abstract

Religious moderation must be understood contextually not textually, meaning that moderation in religion in Indonesia is not a moderate Indonesia, but an understanding of religion must be moderate. The purpose of this research is to find out the basic concepts of religious moderation and the characteristics contained in it. This type of research uses a descriptive qualitative, research method uses a literature review. The data collection method uses documentation. Researchers use content analysis techniques. The results concluded that religious moderation provides an understanding that as a Muslim tolerating fellow religious people, and not discriminating between races, ethnicities, and religions, also teaches how we think dynamically and innovatively. This moderation concept will bring Indonesia in a better direction, so that there is no discrimination in diversity and creates a sense of security and comfort. This research contributes as enrichment material and knowledge information for readers and academics related to the urgency of the concept (paradigm) of religious moderation and its implications in everyday life.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the role of religious leaders in instilling an attitude of religious moderation in the millennial generation in Borong Kapala, Kab. Bantaeng. This research method uses the type of field research. This research was conducted in 2021. Data collection methods through data research using observation, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis was carried out through three stages, namely (1) data reduction; (2) data exposure; and (3) conclusion drawing. The results revealed that the purpose and urgency of religious moderation is to create balance, peace, and prosperity. Because every religion or understanding teaches good values and upholds humanity, religious moderation is very important because the tendency to practice religious teachings is sometimes excessive and often leaves one-sided truth and considers itself the most correct while others are wrong. So, we need to know that the purpose of religious moderation is to create a society always at peace without having to look at each other.

Abstract

Background: The focus of this research discusses the role of religious leaders in social development and religious harmony in the 21st century. Objective: To analyze and understand the influence of religious leaders on social and religious dynamics in Banyumas Regency in the 21st century. Method: The approach used in this research is an interdisciplinary approach with qualitative methods. The research was conducted in Banyumas Regency. The subjects were families, colleagues, students, and community leaders who had interacted with religious figures from Banyumas who passed away in the 21st century. Data collection techniques included documentation, participant observation, and in-depth interviews. The data were analyzed using qualitative descriptive analysis. Result: Religious leaders in Banyumas play a very important role in various aspects of community life, including religion, education, politics, and economics. Conclusion: The presence and leadership of religious figures significantly influence the development of social and religious harmony in Banyumas. Contribution: This research provides a deeper understanding of how religious leaders contribute to social-religious development, offering valuable insights for future community empowerment and interfaith harmony strategies.

Abstract

Background: In the digital era, the rapid spread of religious content through online platforms presents both opportunities and challenges for maintaining religious harmony. The need for moderate, inclusive, and contextual religious understanding has become increasingly urgent, especially among younger generations. Objective: This study aims to explore the role of university students in moderating religious knowledge in the digital era. Method: This research uses a qualitative approach with a literature review method. Data were collected from various written sources such as books, scientific journals, articles, and relevant online sources. Data were analyzed using the content analysis method, which included data reduction, data presentation, interpretation, and conclusion drawing. Result: The results showed that students play a strategic role in moderating religious knowledge through social media engagement, dissemination of positive and educational religious content, formation of online interfaith communities, and collaboration with religious leaders and academics to promote religious moderation. Conclusion: University students have significant potential as agents of religious moderation in the digital era, using their digital literacy and social influence to counteract radical narratives and foster inclusive dialogue. Contribution: This research contributes to a deeper understanding of the proactive role of the younger generation, particularly university students, in maintaining religious harmony and promoting moderate religious discourse in the digital landscape.

Abstract

Background: In a diverse academic environment, particularly in religious universities, the importance of fostering religious moderation is increasingly crucial. Religious tolerance among students of different faiths plays a vital role in maintaining peace and harmony on campus. Objective: This study aims to examine the application of religious moderation (tolerance) among students at UIN K. H. Abdurrahman Wahid Pekalongan and to explore the role of anthropology in promoting this moderation within the campus environment. Method: The research employs a qualitative approach and was conducted in 2024 at UIN K. H. Abdurrahman Wahid Pekalongan. Data were collected through interviews, observation, and documentation. Data analysis involved three stages: data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. Result: The findings reveal that the application of religious moderation among students is well-implemented. It serves as a strategic approach to maintaining harmony among students of different religious backgrounds and fosters peaceful, tolerant, and respectful interfaith interactions on campus. Conclusion: Religious moderation is effectively upheld through an anthropological lens within the university setting, contributing to a culture of mutual respect and coexistence among students of diverse faiths. Contribution: This research provides valuable insights into the relevance of an anthropological approach in strengthening religious moderation among students and offers a scientific reference for further studies in religious and cultural diversity in higher education.

Abstract

Background: Indonesia’s multicultural society presents both opportunities and challenges for maintaining inter-religious harmony. In local communities with religious diversity, the practice of tolerance is essential to support peaceful coexistence and national unity. Objective: The purpose of this study is to determine how inter-religious harmony is implemented in Bandar Village, which is known for its religious diversity. Method: This research employs a field research method conducted in 2023 in Bandar Village, Bandar District, Batang Regency. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and direct observation, and analyzed using content analysis. Result: The findings reveal that Bandar Village residents, despite their religious differences, exhibit strong tolerance and mutual respect. Their religious beliefs are deeply rooted from birth and are not influenced or disrupted by external religious pressures. Conclusion: Bandar Village demonstrates a successful model of inter-religious harmony, where strong internal beliefs and mutual acceptance foster a peaceful and respectful community life. Contribution: This study provides a valuable reference for understanding the practical application of religious moderation in a multicultural society and offers insights for replicating similar approaches in other diverse communities to sustain harmony and unity.

Abstract

Background: Indonesia's rich religious, ethnic, and cultural diversity is a source of pride but also presents challenges to social harmony. The rise of extremism and intolerance highlights the urgent need for a balanced and inclusive approach to religious life. Objective: This study aims to analyze the urgency of religious moderation within Indonesia's diverse society and to identify the potential consequences if such moderation is neglected. Method: A qualitative method was employed, using a library research approach to examine relevant literature, policy documents, and scholarly publications. Result: The findings indicate that without a moderate approach to religious life, the risks of social conflict and national disintegration increase significantly. Religious moderation has proven effective in reducing extremism, fostering interfaith dialogue, and strengthening the values of tolerance and unity within the framework of Pancasila and Bhinneka Tunggal Ika. Conclusion: Religious moderation plays a critical role as a middle path that can help mitigate the tensions arising from Indonesia's rich religious diversity. Religious moderation, deeply rooted in Cultural heritage, bridges differing religious practices and local wisdom. Contribution: The contribution of this research lies in offering a deeper conceptual understanding of the importance of religious moderation as a preventive strategy for maintaining national integration and as a foundation for inclusive educational and social policy development.
