Abstract

An important note that should be emphasized is that the physical history of the Indonesian revolution are rarely included the involvement of the clergy or religious leaders. The key role played by K.H. Hasyim through political fatwa, which is further supported by the widespread ideology of jihad in the war of independence, has contributed important sheet of the neglected history.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v5i1.760

This paper will reveal images Pesantren tradition, Kyai, and the congregation that has not been studied by scholars such as van den Berg, Hurgronje, and Clifford Geertz thus able to capture the real power of intellectual tradition and religious boarding schools. Abstract

For some people, religion is often regarded as obstacles in the development of society. However, not all matters relating to the development, both in political, economic and social, hampered by religious factors. In fact, not a few religious factors play a very positive role in community development. In that regard, the founder of the Indonesian state, from the beginning has thought to do a kind of bureaucratization of religious issues, particularly Islam. There is a common assumption in modernization theory that religion represents an obstacle to modern social development. Despite this assumption, and despite the adherence of Indonesia'a New Order ideologues to modernization theory, the Indonesian goverment still recognizes the positive contibution to social development provided by religion.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v5i1.762

"Civilization", the term employed as the main title of the book under review, is of spesific significance to us here. The term has appeared only in recent scholarly works on Southeast Asian Islam, especially those written by oreintalists. This paper is a review of the book Mohd. Abstract

The purpose of this paperis to illustrate some of the dilemmas in which Islam finds itself with respect to advamces in modern medical science. This is of course a very large subject and all I can do here is to take a very small sample of problems as expressed in fatawa (legal rulings-see futher below) over the past thirty years. Coincidentally, these are also the years which have seen tremendous advances in medicine and the ways in which we can now treat (or mistreat?) the human body.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v4i4.764

Abstract

This article, which  opens a new  line of research,  is intended  to make a first assessment of the consequences  of Indonesian migration to saudi Arabia,  in particular  during  the  first half of the 2Oth century-a period when the immigration is bound  up with the pilgrimage from which Saudi Arabia draws a large part of its revenues. It must be added  that while documentary  evidence and partial studies on  this period  exist,  it turns out that documentation on the contemporary period  is scarce. This article also  is concerned with describing the evolution  of certain striking  aspects of the close  relation  between  the pilgrimage to Mecca  and Indonesian migrants  looking  for work.  We need to consider  the methods  of hiring  labor,  the networks  involved  in recruiting it, the organization  of travel,  as well as the increasing indebtedness  of the migrants  through  intermediaries  who, more and more professionally, arrange  these attempts  to live abroad, prompted in many cases by the same desire  for wealth.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v4i4.767
