Abstract

the discourse concerning feminism in Indonesian Muslim society is relatively recent. The emergence of such a movement only goes back to the early twentieth century, when R.A Kartini, a daughter of Jepara Resident, struggled for an equal position for man and women in public life. it seems that the movement has tried to respon a particular challenge faced by most women in the Dutch-East Indies who have been discriminated againts and denied access to education. as the movement speards, the discourse on gender rises to become an important issue among muslims in Indonesia, particularly in academic sphere. It grows rapidly with more extensive and subtantial topics of discussion.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v6i1.748

For muslims with sufficient means at their disposal, the hajj the pilgrimage to Mecca, is one of the ritual obligations of their faith. It is, however, not the only pilgrimage that is made by Muslims. In almost all Islamic countries one finds sacred places that are visited by pilgrims. Indonesia, for example, has thousands of Islamic pilgrim sites scattered over the many islands. Most of them are only of local or regional importance, but some are national or even internationally renoened religious centres. The largest pilgrim sites attract hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. For a great number of sanctuaries, it is not posibble to establish when the site become a pilgromage site. Some date from pre-Islamic times and at a later date were incorporated into the Islamic tradition.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v5i2.751

Abstract

This article discusses some of the characteristic peculiarities of the pesantren as in Pesantren Hidayatullah, Balikpapan, East Kalimantan, which does not make Arabic reviewing activities as part of the daily staple of his students.During the last three decades, pesantren in Indonesia have shown  a variety of institutional developments. The identification of pesantren as Islamic learning institutions-especially in term of their specific role in preserving intellectual tradition and reproducing 'ilama' may no longer be sufficient to explaint that development. Such a trend can be seen in the establishment of a significant number of Islamic learning institution in the country with different visions and characteristics of learning. One of the leading institutions representing this new form of pesantren is Pesantren Hidayatullah, Balikpapan, East Kalimantan.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v5i2.756
