Abstract

This study arose from an awareness of the importance of instilling values of religious moderation in education, especially in schools based on a particular religious identity. The focus of the study was on how non-Catholic students interpreted their experiences in a Catholic school environment, using Santa Maria Gorontalo Catholic Junior High School in Gorontalo as the location for the study. A qualitative approach was used with a case study design, involving five participants consisting of teachers and students from various religious backgrounds. Data was obtained through in-depth interviews and then processed using qualitative descriptive analysis to explore patterns in their experiences and perceptions in greater depth. Based on the results of interviews and observations, the author found that this school has succeeded in creating an inclusive and warm learning atmosphere. Non-Catholic students feel accepted, valued, and comfortable being part of the school community. Social interactions between students and the exemplary behavior of teachers play an important role in fostering mutual respect and moderation. These findings show that religious moderation does not always have to be taught through formal programs or policies, but can grow naturally through warm social relationships and daily practices in the educational environment.

Abstract

The transformation of IAIN into UIN Sultan Amai Gorontalo through Presidential Regulation Number 48 of 2026 demands an epistemological leap, not merely an administrative change. The establishment of the university’s emblem through Decree of the Director General of Islamic Education Number 7920 of 2026, which makes the Gorontalo Makuta the main form of the logo, strengthens the relevance of the “Makuta Ilmu” paradigm. This article addresses the question: how can the ontological, epistemological, and axiological structures of Makuta Ilmu be formulated integratively and accountably in the scientific development of UIN Sultan Amai Gorontalo? The study employs conceptual-philosophical analysis of cultural texts, the philosophy of Adati hula-hula’a to syara’a, syara’a hula-hula’a to Kuru’ani, the concept of Buatulo Toulongo, and comparison of scientific paradigms of UINs in Indonesia. The findings show that Makuta Ilmu has a theo-anthropo-cosmoscentric ontological structure; an integrative-dialectical epistemology connecting revelation, reason, empirical experience, and culture; and an axiology that positions knowledge as the crown of civilization for justice, humanity, and sustainability. This paradigm differs from other UIN paradigms because it derives from Gorontalo’s socio-cultural structure. Its contribution is to enrich the epistemological discourse of PTKIN and provide a basis for curriculum, research, and community service based on local wisdom. The article concludes that Makuta Ilmu is a paradigmatic offer open to dialogue, critique, and refinement.

Abstract

This study analyzes adolescent drug abuse in Limboto Subdistrict, Gorontalo Regency, by treating substance use as a social practice shaped through family relations, peer groups, psychological stress, environmental opportunity, and religious and community resources. A qualitative case-study design with a sociological orientation was employed. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation involving people with drug-use experiences and law-enforcement personnel; some adult participants retrospectively described initiation that occurred during adolescence. The findings show that methamphetamine is the most salient substance in participants' accounts, with initiation strongly linked to peers, use as a coping strategy for stress, and signs of dependence such as an urge to reuse the substance when its effects subside. Family dynamics, peer environments, limited access to positive activities, economic pressure, and weak social control operate in overlapping ways rather than as isolated causes. The article extends a structural-functional reading through social ecological and social learning perspectives and a sociology-of-religion lens, showing that families, schools, peer groups, religious communities, and law enforcement can function as both risk and protective environments. Religiosity is approached not as a single moral explanation but as a potential source of meaning, support networks, and social control whose effects depend on family and community relations. The study concludes that prevention requires integrated family- and peer-based strategies, accessible positive youth activities, non-stigmatizing health and rehabilitation services, supportive religious engagement, and law enforcement focused on disrupting drug-supply networks.

Abstract

This study analyzes symbolic violence against non-pesantren students in the Qur’anic Reading, Writing, and Memorization Program (BTHQ) at the Faculty of Ushuluddin and Da’wah, IAIN Sultan Amai Gorontalo. Using qualitative case study, data were collected through moderate observation, in-depth interviews with eight non-pesantren students, one Ma’had Al-Jami’ah administrator, two lecturers, and documentation. Analysis employed initial, focused, and axial coding with Pierre Bourdieu’s concepts of habitus, capital, field, doxa, misrecognition, hysteresis, and symbolic violence. Findings show that non-pesantren students are not homogeneous; their BTHQ proficiency is shaped by family socialization, madrasah, TPA, public schooling, and pre-university Qur’anic practice. Symbolic violence emerges when Qur’anic standards rooted in a particular religious habitus are naturalized as universally reasonable for all Islamic university students, while unequal capital is read as personal deficiency. Bureaucratic information asymmetry and limited student participation reinforce this. The problem is not BTHQ standards themselves, but uniform standards without adequate compensation. BTHQ should retain its religious objectives while shifting from uniform selection toward differentiated mentoring, diagnostic assessment, remedial pathways, and participatory governance.

Abstract

This article examines academic task outsourcing among students at Campus 1, Faculty of Ushuluddin and Dakwah, IAIN Sultan Amai Gorontalo, as both an academic-integrity problem and a socio-religious phenomenon. Rather than treating task outsourcing merely as a rule violation, the study explores how students interpret, negotiate, and normalize the practice within an Islamic higher-education setting that normatively emphasizes trustworthiness, honesty, and responsibility. A qualitative phenomenological design was employed through observation, semi-structured interviews with five students, documentation, and one lecturer interview for triangulation. Data were interpreted through an interactive thematic procedure combining the Theory of Planned Behavior, contract-cheating scholarship, and a lived-religion perspective. The findings show that task outsourcing operates through peer networks and social media, particularly WhatsApp, using simple transactional arrangements, affordable prices, and increased demand during periods of heavy workload and tight deadlines. Students do not always understand the practice as serious cheating; under particular circumstances it is rationalized as help, a shortcut, or an academic survival strategy. This reveals a gap between normatively known religious morality and morality enacted in everyday academic life. Accordingly, prevention requires more than sanctions: meaningful assessment design, academic-integrity literacy, accessible academic support, stronger lecturer-student relations, and the practical internalization of religious ethics are also necessary.
