Abstract

This study aims to provide an integrated inventory of terrestrial and marine biodiversity in the extreme south of Madagascar by documenting taxonomic diversity, endemism, species distribution, and conservation status across major biological groups. An integrated biodiversity assessment was conducted through a synthesis of published and unpublished literature, institutional records, and field inventories undertaken in representative terrestrial and coastal ecosystems of the Androy region. The study covered marine algae, mollusks, crustaceans, insects, amphibians, reptiles, tortoises, birds, lemurs, and other mammals. The findings revealed that the region supports considerable biological diversity despite its semi-arid environment, with particularly high levels of endemism among marine algae, mollusks, reptiles, birds, and lemurs. Several endemic and threatened species were identified, highlighting the ecological significance of the remaining dry forests, xerophytic thickets, and coastal habitats. However, biodiversity is increasingly threatened by habitat degradation, unsustainable resource use, illegal wildlife exploitation, prolonged drought, and climate change. This study provides one of the first comprehensive syntheses of biodiversity in the Androy region and establishes an important scientific baseline for future ecological research, biodiversity monitoring, conservation planning, and the sustainable management of Madagascar's unique natural heritage

Abstract

This study examined the impacts of climate change on the resilience of terrestrial ecosystems in the Androy Region, southern Madagascar. A mixed-methods research design was employed, integrating climatic data analysis, household surveys, key informant interviews, field observations, and document review to assess ecosystem responses and community adaptation strategies. The findings revealed that declining rainfall, rising temperatures, and recurrent droughts have accelerated land degradation, reduced vegetation cover, intensified food insecurity, and weakened ecosystem resilience. The study also identified socioeconomic and institutional constraints, including limited agricultural resources, inadequate infrastructure, and gender inequality, as factors reducing adaptive capacity. Nevertheless, ecosystem restoration, sustainable land management, and community-based natural resource management emerged as important resilience strategies. The study concludes that integrated ecosystem restoration, climate adaptation, and strengthened institutional support are essential for enhancing ecosystem resilience and promoting sustainable development in the Androy Region.

Abstract

Internal migration has become an important adaptation strategy to climate variability in southern Madagascar, yet its implications for natural resources remain insufficiently understood. This study investigated the impacts of Antandroy migration on water resources, fisheries, and aquatic biodiversity in the districts of Toliara I and Toliara II, Atsimo-Andrefana Region. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining quantitative and qualitative data collected from 150 respondents through structured questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, field observations, and documentary review. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, while qualitative information was examined through thematic analysis. The findings reveal that migration is primarily driven by recurrent drought, food insecurity, and limited livelihood opportunities in the Androy Region. Sustained migration has increased domestic water demand, intensified fishing activities, and contributed to greater pressure on aquatic ecosystems, leading to declining water availability, reduced fishery resources, and deteriorating aquatic biodiversity. However, these environmental changes result from the combined effects of migration, climate variability, population growth, and inadequate natural resource governance rather than migration alone. This study provides an integrated understanding of the relationships between migration and aquatic resource management in southwestern Madagascar and highlights the need for coordinated policies promoting sustainable water management, responsible fisheries, biodiversity conservation, climate adaptation, and migration-sensitive development planning.

Abstract

Artisanal fisheries are fundamental to the livelihoods, food security, and economic resilience of coastal communities in southern Madagascar, yet increasing fishing pressure and environmental change threaten their long-term sustainability. This study examined the contribution of artisanal fisheries to household food security and sustainable resource management using a mixed-methods approach. Primary data were collected from 320 fishing households and 96 non-fishing households across six coastal communities through household surveys, fisheries landing observations, key informant interviews, and focus group discussions. Household food security was assessed using the Food Consumption Score (FCS) and the Household Food Insecurity Access Scale (HFIAS), while fisheries productivity was evaluated using Catch per Unit Effort (CPUE). Multiple linear regression was employed to identify the socio-economic determinants of household food security. The results indicate that fishing households generally achieved higher food security than non-fishing households, although a significant decline in CPUE suggests increasing pressure on marine resources. Livelihood diversification emerged as the strongest predictor of household food security, followed by fishing income and market accessibility. The findings highlight the need for integrated policies that combine sustainable fisheries management, livelihood diversification, and improved market access to enhance household resilience while ensuring the long-term sustainability of coastal fisheries in southern Madagascar.

Abstract

Effective stock assessment is fundamental for the sustainable management of data-limited fisheries. This study assessed the stock status of the spiny lobster (Panulirus homarus) in southeastern Madagascar using a Rectified Virtual Population Analysis (VPA), a pseudo-cohort approach suitable for fisheries with limited age-structured data. Biological measurements of 5,624 individuals collected from artisanal fishery landings between 2018 and 2020 were combined with historical catch and fishing effort data from 2014 to 2020. Carapace length measurements were converted into annual age classes to reconstruct population abundance, estimate age-specific fishing mortality, and evaluate stock status through a yield-per-recruit (YPR) model. The reconstructed population consisted of ten age classes, with catches dominated by individuals aged two to three years. Fishing mortality was highest among lobsters aged two to five years, while population abundance declined progressively with increasing age. The YPR analysis indicated that the current exploitation level exceeds the biological reference point corresponding to the Maximum Sustainable Yield (MSY), demonstrating that the stock is already overexploited. These findings highlight the need to reduce fishing effort, strengthen compliance with minimum legal-size regulations and seasonal closures, promote selective fishing gears, and implement continuous biological monitoring. The study demonstrates that Rectified VPA provides a practical and reliable framework for assessing data-limited lobster fisheries and supports evidence-based management for the sustainable exploitation of P. homarus in southeastern Madagascar.
