Abstract

Background. English is a global language with numerous regional and social varieties, each exhibiting unique phonological characteristics. These variations are shaped by diverse social, cultural, and geographical influences, leading to significant differences in pronunciation across different English-speaking communities. In the context of cross-cultural communication, these phonological differences can either enhance cultural identity or create barriers to mutual understanding. Purpose. This study aims to explore how phonological variations manifest across different varieties of English spoken around the world. It also seeks to investigate how social, cultural, and geographical factors contribute to these variations, and how they influence the perception and understanding of speech in cross-cultural communication. Furthermore, the research examines the role of these phonological variations in constructing and reflecting the social identity of speakers. Method. The study employs a qualitative research approach combined with phonetic analysis to examine specific phonological features. Data collection methods include in-depth interviews with speakers from various English varieties and the application of advanced acoustic analysis technology to identify key phonetic variations. This combination of qualitative and technological methods provides a comprehensive understanding of the sociophonetic landscape of global English. Results. The results reveal substantial phonological differences across different varieties of English. These include vowel shifts, distinct consonant cluster patterns, varying intonation contours, differing degrees of rhoticity, and contrasts between syllable-timed and stress-timed rhythms. These features significantly impact intelligibility in cross-cultural communication. Conclusion. Phonological variations not only contribute to the rich diversity of global English but also play a crucial role in shaping the social and cultural identity of speakers. At the same time, these variations influence the effectiveness of communication across cultural and linguistic boundaries.

Abstract

Background. Semantic shifts in political discourse are a phenomenon that is increasingly occurring in modern political communication. Language manipulation is used by political actors and the media to shape public opinion, reframe an issue, and create new meanings that suit certain political interests. This strategy not only has an impact on how the public understands policies, but also on the political dynamics that develop in them. Purpose. This study aims to analyze how semantic shifts are used in political discourse as well as how changes in the meaning of words can affect public perception. The study also examines how politicians and the media utilize linguistic strategies to manipulate political discourse and shape certain narratives on a variety of evolving political issues. Method. This study uses critical discourse analysis and semantic linguistic analysis methods to examine 78 political documents, including politicians' speeches, debate transcripts, media news, and policy documents. The data was analyzed with a thematic approach to identify patterns of semantic shifts that emerged in political communication. Results. The analysis showed that political metaphors were a key tool in semantic shifts, with a percentage of 32% of the total documents analyzed. Framing strategies and diction manipulation are also used to build political narratives that benefit certain actors. Shifts in the meaning of words are often used to lead public opinion without them realizing it, thus creating a bias in the understanding of political issues. Conclusion. Semantic shifts are not just linguistic changes, but are political communication strategies that have a wide impact on public opinion and political policy. Awareness of this phenomenon can help the public be more critical in understanding the developing political discourse. This research contributes to deepening the understanding of how language is used as a tool of power in politics and how political literacy can be developed to deal with semantic manipulation in political communication.

Abstract

Background. Creole language is a language that developed through contact between very different languages. Morphological innovations in these languages reflect dynamic adaptations to social and linguistic contexts. This study aims to explore morphological innovations in creole languages and how language contact plays a role in the formation of the language's morphological system. Purpose. The purpose of this study is to identify and analyze the types of morphological innovations in creole languages, as well as to examine the relationship between morphological changes and social and cognitive factors in the speaking community. Method. This study uses a qualitative approach with analysis of creole language morphological data obtained from interviews, daily conversations, and existing literature. The data were analyzed using descriptive and comparative methods to identify morphological innovation patterns. Results. The study found that reduplication was the most dominant morphological innovation in creole language, followed by new affixation and morphological borrowing. These innovations are largely influenced by social interaction and the influence of superstratum and substrate languages. Conclusion. Morphological innovations in creole languages demonstrate the ability of language to adapt and evolve despite having simple roots. This research contributes to a further understanding of how creole language evolved and served as a communication tool in complex social contexts.

Abstract

Background. This research examines how environmental themes are presented in 21st-century literature and the extent to which these themes influence readers’ ecological awareness. In recent years, literature has increasingly served as a platform to address environmental issues, reflecting growing global concerns about climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, and ecological degradation. Fictional narratives have the power to shape public perceptions by portraying the intricate relationship between humans and nature, raising awareness about the consequences of human actions, and encouraging sustainable behaviors. This study seeks to understand how contemporary authors incorporate environmental themes into their works and how readers respond to such narratives. Purpose. The main objective of this research is to explore how environmental narratives in contemporary fiction affect readers’ perceptions, awareness, and attitudes toward environmental issues. It aims to identify the most common environmental themes used in 21st-century literature and assess their potential to promote ecological awareness and encourage conservation efforts. Method. The research employs a qualitative approach, combining textual analysis and in-depth interviews with readers. Thirty contemporary literary works were purposively selected for analysis, covering various genres and cultural backgrounds. The environmental themes, narrative techniques, and ecological messages embedded in these works were examined, while interviews provided insights into how readers interpreted and responded to these narratives. Results. The study finds that environmental themes such as climate change, deforestation, pollution, species extinction, and ecological rehabilitation are prominently featured. These themes effectively engage readers, fostering greater awareness and critical reflection on environmental issues. Conclusion. The study concludes that 21st-century literature plays a significant role in shaping ecological awareness and inspiring readers to take an active role in environmental conservation efforts. Through engaging storytelling, literature can serve as a powerful tool to influence ecological consciousness and promote sustainability.

Abstract

Background. Language processing and syntactic structure are closely linked to the cognitive system and mental representation. Mental representation serves as an internal model that allows speakers to predict, interpret, and produce grammatically structured sentences. In recent years, research in psycholinguistics and cognitive neuroscience has increasingly highlighted the neural and cognitive mechanisms underlying syntactic processing. Understanding how mental representation interacts with syntax can help explain individual differences in language ability and processing efficiency. Purpose. This study aims to examine the role of mental representation in the construction and processing of syntactic structures. Specifically, the research investigates how cognitive factors such as working memory and attention influence the mental encoding and retrieval of syntactic patterns. Furthermore, the study seeks to understand the neural basis of syntactic processing and how different brain regions contribute to syntactic comprehension and production. Method. The research employs a qualitative approach combined with neuropsychological analysis. Data collection includes cognitive tests assessing working memory and attentional capacity, as well as brain imaging techniques such as functional MRI (fMRI) to observe neural activity during syntactic processing tasks. This multi-method approach provides both behavioral and neurological insights into the interplay between mental representation and syntax. Results. The findings show that brain regions such as the prefrontal cortex and Broca’s area exhibit significant activity during syntactic processing tasks. The level of brain activation correlates with individual differences in working memory and attention, indicating that cognitive capacity influences syntactic processing efficiency. Conclusion. Mental representation plays a critical role in syntactic structure formation and language processing. Cognitive factors, particularly working memory and attention, significantly contribute to the efficiency and accuracy of syntactic processing, highlighting the importance of integrating cognitive and neuropsychological perspectives in language research.
