Abstract

This study aims to re-examine Surah Al-Masad through the lens of Buya Hamka's Tafsir Al-Azhar, with the objective of moving beyond a textual reading to uncover its historical context and contemporary relevance. Employing a qualitative library research method, this study adopts a thematic (maudhu'i) interpretation approach. The analysis is conducted systematically through textual, historical, and contextual stages, as well as interdisciplinary approaches from social sciences, politics, and media studies, framed within an integral theology-ethics perspective. The results demonstrate that Surah Al-Masad transcends a mere historical narrative; it presents Abu Lahab as an eternal archetype of the systemic collapse that results from hostility towards the truth. Hamka's interpretation successfully bridges the textual meaning with social reality, revealing the surah's significant contemporary relevance when examined through an interdisciplinary lens. The novelty of this research lies in its integrative analysis that synthesizes theological, ethical, and sociological dimensions within Hamka's framework. The findings imply that policymakers and community leaders can derive strategic insights for constructing resilient da'wah narratives and ethical frameworks to counter modern opposition effectively.

Abstract

This research article examines the concept of practicing forgiveness as interpreted in Tafsir Al-Munir by Wahbah Az-Zuhaili, focusing specifically on Surah Al-A’raf verse 199 and Surah An-Nur verse 22. The study employs a thematic method with a descriptive qualitative approach, concentrating on an analysis of Wahbah Az-Zuhaili's Tafsir Al-Munir through library research to understand the interpretation related to specific themes within the Qur'an. The primary source is Tafsir Al-Munir, while secondary sources include relevant articles and online resources (websites) discussing the related topic. This matter of forgiveness needs to be examined to deepen the knowledge thereof, especially concerning its implementation in real life. The research findings indicate that Wahbah Az-Zuhaili categorizes the forgiveness mentioned in Surah Al-A’raf verse 199 as part of the fundamental social ethics encompassing tolerance, gentleness, and ease in interactions without burdening others. In Surah An-Nur verse 22, he emphasizes the importance of forgiving without retaliation, restoring social relationships, and demonstrating kindness, as exemplified by Abu Bakr towards Misthah. Furthermore, forgiveness must be performed with sincerity as a manifestation of faith, seeking mercy and pardon from Allah, without expecting reward from humans.

Abstract

Abstract

This study examines the role of fathers in shaping the self-concept of Muslim adolescents based on stories from the Qur'an. Using a qualitative library research method, data was collected from various sources, including tafsir books, relevant books, and journals. The stories of Prophet Ibrahim, Luqman, and Prophet Ya'qub provide practical guidance for fathers in building their children's self-concept through prayer as a form of support, fostering emotional attachment, instilling faith-based values, creating spaces for dialogue and discussion, leading by example, being wise and patient in facing challenges, and surrendering to Allah regarding the outcomes of parenting. The findings reveal that fathers play a crucial role in shaping a child's self-concept across physical, moral-ethical, social, personal, and family dimensions, all grounded in Islamic values. These findings offer practical solutions to address adolescent issues, including identity crises, and emphasize the importance of Islamic values in fatherhood to support adolescents' psychosocial development. This study also highlights that parenting efforts must be accompanied by sincerity and reliance on Allah, as exemplified in the story of Prophet Nuh, which illustrates that the ultimate outcomes of parenting are entirely under Allah's will.

Abstract

This study highlights the root of the nasakh problem in the Koran, namely Q.S. al-Baqarah verse 106. Different viewpoints on the interpretation of this verse have different legal consequences; If the meaning of 'âyah' in this verse is interpreted as a verse from the Qur'an, then the consequence is that in the Qur'an there is a verse that has been deleted by law even though the reading is still there. However, if it is interpreted as 'previous Shari'a', then all verses of the Koran remain valid and none of them are abrogated. The aim of this research is to examine the cross-opinions of Al-Qur'an scholars regarding the nasakh. The author applied the comparative method (muqârin) and a qualitative approach through literature review in this research. The result is that there are significant differences between the interpretations of Nawawi al-Bantani and Quraish Shihab in understanding this verse, which also causes differences in understanding other verses of the Koran.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the epistemological foundations of maqāṣid-based Qur'anic interpretation in the work of Bediuzzaman Said Nursi, particularly through his Risālah al-Nūr corpus. Employing a qualitative descriptive-critical method, the study investigates the textual discourse of Nursi to extract the underlying epistemology in his construction of Qur’anic objectives (maqāṣid). The findings show that Nursi’s approach goes beyond presenting maqāṣid as mere legal aims; rather, he builds them upon fitrah (innate human disposition), revelation, and reason, viewing them as internal structures of the Qur’anic text. The research focuses on four central objectives in Nursi’s framework: Tawḥīd (Divine Unity), Prophethood, Resurrection, and Justice. The novelty of this research lies in its epistemological reading of Nursi’s tafsir and in highlighting his contribution to contemporary renewal in Qur'anic interpretation.

Abstract

This study explores the Qur’anic concept of Tazkiyatun Nafs—the purification of the soul—through a thematic exegesis approach. It focuses on two principal dimensions: the cleansing of the soul from sins and negative traits, and the development of spiritual and moral potential toward akhlaq al-karimah (noble character). The Qur’an addresses nafs in multiple dimensions—ruh (spirit), qalb (heart), and ‘aql (intellect)—while acknowledging the dual nature of human potential for both righteousness and corruption. Tazkiyah is framed as a comprehensive process involving increased faith, spiritual awareness, self-restraint, introspection, and improved social relations, all of which aim to elevate the human condition and draw one closer to Allah SWT. Beyond personal development, Tazkiyatun Nafs holds wider implications for ecological and societal balance. A purified soul fosters environmental responsibility, discourages exploitation, and promotes harmonious coexistence within the broader ecosystem—aligning spiritual purification with ecological sustainability. This research argues that resolving moral and ecological crises requires more than technical interventions; it demands a return to inner transformation rooted in spiritual consciousness. Tazkiyatun Nafs thus emerges as a foundational pillar in building an integrated Muslim identity—harmonizing body and soul, while resisting materialism and hedonism. The findings recommend further interdisciplinary research connecting Qur’anic psychology, education, and sustainable development frameworks.
The Concept of Marriage in the Holy Qur’an According to Sayyid Qutb in Fī Ẓilāl al-Qur’ān: A Study in Confronting the Phenomenon of “Marriage is Scary”: "مفهوم الزواج في القرآن الكريم عند سيد قطب في ظلال القرآن: دراسة في مواجهة ظاهرة "الزواج مخيف Ahmad Fadly Rahman Akbar; Lulu’atul Fuad

Abstract

The phenomenon of “Marriage is Scary” has become one of the growing social issues among today’s young Muslim generation. Fear of marriage arises from past traumas, economic concerns, and the influence of individualistic culture that weakens the spiritual values and meaning of marriage. This research aims to reveal how Sayyid Qutb interprets the Qur’anic verses on marriage and how his ideas can respond to the “Marriage is Scary” phenomenon. This study is a thematic research employing a literature review, descriptive, and analytical methods. In other words, after describing the interpretations of Qur’anic verses containing commands to marry from various classical exegetes, the researcher correlates them with the current spiritual and moral challenges faced by today’s generation. The results show that Sayyid Qutb’s thought provides a comprehensive response to the “Marriage is Scary” phenomenon through three main aspects. First, in QS. Ar-Rūm [30]: 21, the principle of marriage emphasizes the importance of faith, responsibility, and spiritual balance as the foundation for achieving tranquility (sakinah). Second, in QS. An-Nisā’ [4]: 34, the purpose of marriage is presented as a means of moral and spiritual development that nurtures love (mawaddah) and mercy (rahmah). Third, in QS. An-Nūr [24]: 32, the command to marry is understood as an act of obedience to Allah that can heal trauma and strengthen faith. Thus, Sayyid Qutb’s ideas can serve as a spiritual alternative solution to the crisis of the meaning of marriage in the modern era. Upon completing this study, the researcher suggests that future studies expand the analysis by comparing Sayyid Qutb’s views with other contemporary exegetes, or by examining the “Marriage is Scary” phenomenon through multidisciplinary approaches such as Islamic psychology and the sociology of religion, to enrich both spiritual and social perspectives on this issue.

Abstract

This study examines the concept of libâs at-taqwâ in the Qur’anic perspective as a response to the social reality of Muslim dress in Indonesia, which is often understood merely in its outward form. The notion of piety clothing is frequently associated with ritual attire, yet in practice it has undergone meaning distortion, commercialization, and neglect of its spiritual essence. Using a thematic (mawḍū‘ī) tafsir approach through library research, this study focuses on Tafsîr al-Mishbâh by M. Quraish Shihab and Tafsîr al-Azhar by Hamka, particularly on Surah al-A‘râf/7:26. An analysis of their exegetical methods reveals different emphases: Quraish Shihab regards inner clothing as the true attire in Islam, while Hamka underscores outward clothing in accordance with the sharia as a concrete manifestation of inner piety. The Qur’an presents libâs at-taqwâ as a symbol of inner submission reflected through ethics, modesty, and spiritual awareness. This study highlights five forms of its implementation in modern life: as a symbol of self-awareness, an expression of moderation and aesthetic balance, a means of social and ethical protection, an Islamic identity in plural society, and a medium of da‘wah. Thus, libâs at-taqwâ must be understood holistically, integrating both inward and outward dimensions in harmony with Qur’anic guidance.

Abstract

This study explores the concept of the ideal personality in the perspective of the Qur’an as a response to the modern human personality crisis, which remains unresolved through Western theories. Psychoanalysis (Freud), behaviorism (Skinner), humanism (Maslow), and neurological approaches (Damasio, MacLean) have contributed to psychology and education but fall short in addressing the spiritual and moral dimensions of personality. In Islamic psychology, al-Ghazali and Ibn Qayyim emphasize that the nafs constitutes the core of personality, which must be viewed integrally alongside the qalb, intellect, and spirit. The Qur’an presents diverse typologies of personality shaped by the condition of the qalb, such as nafs ammārah, lawwāmah, and muṭma’innah, as well as categories of believers, disbelievers, and hypocrites. Within this framework, qalbun salīm emerges as the foundation of the ideal personality— a heart purified from vain desires and doubts, guiding the intellect and nafs toward spiritual balance and moral integrity. Employing a thematic (mawḍū‘ī) exegesis approach through library research, this study finds that the Qur’an offers an integral, theocentric, and transcendental paradigm of personality. This paradigm provides a constructive alternative to contemporary personality crises by positioning the heart and human nature (fiṭrah) as the central basis of personality development.
