Abstract

This article examines the role of Indonesian students in confronting the New Order regime (1974-1998), a period marked by political, economic, and social crises following the military takeover. The historical backdrop reflects widespread dissatisfaction that culminated in the Malari incident of 1974, a pivotal moment in the students' struggle for freedom of expression and the press. Student protests not only articulated grievances against government policies but also led to media crackdowns, exemplified by the case of Harian KAMI, which highlighted government efforts to silence critical voices. In the face of repression, students adapted by creating alternative media and forging alliances with various organizations, thus strengthening the social movement. This article also explores how student protests and public discussions successfully fostered public opinion in support of reform. By analyzing the impact of student activism, the article underscores their crucial role in cultivating collective awareness and promoting the transition towards the reform era. In conclusion, student voices, despite being stifled in various ways, remained a significant force in opposing authoritarian regimes, emphasizing the importance of active participation in the democratic struggle in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study examines his Sufi practices, karomah, and example as a guardian of God in Indonesia, particularly in South Kalimantan. The study employed library research, collecting data from various sources, books, journals, and historical records, then analyzing them through historical and Sufi approaches to interpret his role and influence. The results show that Abah Guru Sekumpul was a gentle, patient, compassionate, generous, and diligent scholar. Since childhood, he had developed spiritual abilities, including vision and the gift of seeing the unseen, which further developed through intensive education at Islamic boarding schools and under the guidance of expert teachers from Kalimantan to Mecca. His practices included religious teachings, maintaining prayer gatherings, and consistent practice of Sufism, which not only shaped his personality but also inspired thousands of worshippers. The charisma that accompanied his life—such as the ability to be present in several places simultaneously and extraordinary spiritual experiences—were manifestations of his closeness to God, not his primary goal, but rather the fruit of sincerity, discipline, and appreciation of the sharia, tarekat, and haqiqah. Furthermore, this study emphasizes the universal dimension of compassion in his Sufism, where compassion and respect embrace all groups, including those of different faiths. Abah Guru Sekumpul's sainthood continues to live on after his death through regular memorial services, spiritual influence, and the inheritance of prophetic teachings. The overall findings confirm that Abah Guru Sekumpul was a Sufi figure capable of integrating religious practice, morality, and social service, thus becoming a spiritual and social role model who continues to influence the people of Kalimantan and the Indonesian archipelago at large.

Abstract

This article examines how Islam played a role in Indonesian political dynamics from the sultanate era to the Reformation. Through the lens of historical methods, this research explains that since the beginning, Islam has been an important factor in the legitimacy of government and power, as seen in the Demak and Aceh sultanates. Organizations such as the Sarekat Islam, founded in the early 20th century, played a significant role in combating colonialism. The debate over Islam's role in the state after independence became more complex, particularly to the Jakarta Charter, which recommended the implementation of Islamic law. Although Islam's political role was limited during the New Order, organizations such as Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) and Muhammadiyah remained active in social and educational fields. During the Reformation era, Islamic parties such as the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) and the United Development Party (PPP) emerged, seeking to integrate Islamic values into the democratic system. However, the challenges of pluralism and radicalism created tensions in the application of Islamic principles. In this context, NU and Muhammadiyah served as instruments of moderation and promoted tolerance and harmony between different communities. Through this approach, Islam serves not only as a religion but also as a key pillar for building an inclusive and stable democracy in Indonesia.

Abstract

Usaha Mikro, Kecil, dan Menengah (UMKM) are the backbone of Indonesia’s economy, yet they continue to face various challenges such as limited capital, fluctuating raw material prices, and intense market competition. One culinary UMKM rooted in local wisdom is Kelembut (Kemplang Lembut), a specialty from Kayu Agung, South Sumatra, which combines traditional flavors with modern innovation. The main problem addressed in this study is how the Kelembut UMKM can survive and grow amid these challenges. The purpose of this research is to examine the development strategies of Kelembut through social relations and networking, as well as to assess the opportunities and obstacles faced by business actors. The research uses a qualitative case study approach, employing data collection methods such as in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation.. Informants were selected purposively, namely, business actors considered to have relevant information. Data analysis was conducted using thematic methods through reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing to ensure the validity of findings. The results show that the development strategy of Kelembut UMKM focuses on product innovation, digital marketing, and strengthening local identity. Innovation is carried out through taste standardization, the creation of new variants such as frozen food, and the use of vacuum-sealed packaging that is more hygienic and durable. Digital marketing leverages social media, online marketplaces, and collaboration with UMKM communities to expand distribution networks. Social relations prove to be an essential asset, whether through culinary communities, campus bazaars, or partnerships with resellers and dropshippers. However, limited capital, unstable fish prices, and low digital literacy remain significant barriers. Overall, this study emphasizes that the success of Kelembut UMKM depends not only on internal factors but also on the ability to build social networks and community ties. Strategies based on social relations and continuous innovation are key to enhancing competitiveness while preserving local culinary heritage.

Abstract

The Tariqa of Qadiriyah wa Naqsyabandiyah (TQN) is a conbination of two major Sufi orders, the Tariqa of Qadiriyah and the Tariqa of Naqsyabandiyah, combined by a great Nusantara Sufi scholar, Shaykh Ahmad Khatib Ibn Abdul Ghaffar al-Sambasi al-Jawi (d. 1878 CE), who resided in Mecca until the end of his life. This study aims to explore the spiritual journey of Sufis who practice the Tariqa of Qadiriyah wa Naqsyabandiyah and its influence on the community of Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan. The method employed is the historical method through the stages of heuristics (source collection), criticism (source verification), interpretation, and historiography (historical writing). Research sources were obtained from books, scholarly articles in accredited national journals, and other sources relevant to the discussed topic. The reading materials include books and articles discussing the Tariqa of Qadiriyah wa Naqsyabandiyah and its development in the Nusantara, particularly in South Kalimantan. This study reveals that theTariqa of  Qadiriyah wa Naqsyabandiyah entered South Kalimantan through the efforts of Prof. Dr. H. M. Zurkani Yahya in 1998, who was a deputy talqin (authorized representative for initiating disciples) from Suryalaya Islamic Boarding School. After the passing of Prof. Zurkani Yahya, his successor as the deputy talqin continuing the teachings of TQN in South Kalimantan was Drs. K.H. Syakrani Nasri. This Sufi order not only brought spiritual teachings but also played a role in addressing social issues such as juvenile delinquency and drug abuse through Pondok Inabah, which utilizes TQN dhikr (remembrance of God) methods as spiritual therapy. Although Pondok Inabah Banua Anyar is currently inactive, guidance continues under the leadership of the Deputy Talqin. The Tariqa of Qadiriyah wa Naqsyabandiyah continue to play a role in providing explanations, understanding, and the talqin dhikr to the community in South Kalimantan, with the primary goal of drawing closer to Allah SWT; social impacts, such as spiritual healing, are effects of these dhikr practices.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to explain the socio-political aspects of Bandung during the Dutch colonial era. Historical research methods, including heuristics, criticism, interpretation, and historiography, support the historical review in this research. The study of social conditions in Bandung, viewed from a temporal perspective before the ethical politics, shows that social life in Bandung was relatively stable and cooperative with the Dutch government. Social conditions in Bandung began to develop dynamically when ethical politics were implemented, and educational freedom was granted. Bandung is one of the regions with quite comprehensive educational facilities from elementary to higher education. The existence of this education gave rise to an educated class and led to the formation of various organizations that influenced socio-political life. Some of these organizations are the Indische Partij, PNI, Sekar Rukun, Paguyuban Pasundan, NU, Muhammadiyah, and Sarekat Islam. These organizations arose from the existence of education and also influenced the struggle through education for subsequent generations. The dynamics of changing social conditions are quite significant, from passivity to active participation in the fight for national independence. The struggles in Bandung were not limited by social, political, or religious status. All organizations played a significant role in the struggle for national independence from Dutch colonial rule. The struggle did not cease even when several prominent figures were imprisoned. Support for the struggle spread from individuals to families, then to society.
