Abstract

This study focuses on teaching reading of recount texts using the Natural Approach, based on the theory proposed by Krashen and Terrell (1983). The primary objectives were to determine the effectiveness of the Natural Approach in teaching recount text reading and to assess the improvement in reading skills among eighth-grade students at MTs Al-Makmur Parung Panjang. A pre-experimental research design was employed, utilizing a one-group pre-test and post-test framework, which included three meetings with treatment sessions. The study incorporated both qualitative and quantitative research methods for data collection. A total of 33 students from class 8.1 participated in the study. Qualitative data were gathered through observation guidelines during the recount text reading sessions, while quantitative data were obtained by analyzing the students' scores from the pre-test and post-test. The results were derived from a five-question essay test administered before and after the treatment. The mean scores demonstrated significant improvement: the pre-test average was 4.36, while the post-test average increased to 8.06. This improvement is further supported by the t-test results, which indicated a t-value of 12.737, exceeding the t-table value of 2.036. Thus, the alternative hypothesis was accepted, and the null hypothesis was rejected. Based on the findings, the use of the Natural Approach effectively enhances reading skills among eighth-grade students at MTs Al-Makmur Parung Panjang, indicating that this approach is a valuable method for improving students' reading proficiency.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the use of storytelling as a technique to develop students' speaking skills. Specifically, it investigates three key aspects: (1) the types of storytelling topics that effectively enhance speaking abilities, (2) the instructional activities employed by the teacher to teach speaking through storytelling, and (3) the students' responses to the use of storytelling in the classroom. To achieve these objectives, a qualitative research method was applied, where the analysis is presented in a descriptive, textual form. Data were collected through direct observation of classroom activities and interviews with both the teacher and the students. The observations allowed for an in-depth understanding of how storytelling is integrated into the speaking curriculum, while the interviews provided insights into the students’ experiences and perceptions. The findings of this study reveal that storytelling is an effective technique for teaching speaking. It helps students become more engaged and active participants in the classroom. Through storytelling, students were encouraged to use their own words to narrate, describe, and express ideas, which in turn built their confidence in speaking English. The interactive nature of the storytelling activities also fostered a positive learning environment, as students enjoyed the process of listening to and telling stories. This enjoyment was crucial in motivating them to practice speaking more frequently and confidently. Overall, the study concludes that storytelling is a valuable tool for developing speaking skills, as it not only helps students practice language but also nurtures their creativity and enhances their ability to communicate in a more relaxed, supportive atmosphere. The findings underscore the importance of integrating engaging, communicative methods like storytelling into language teaching, particularly when aiming to improve students' speaking proficiency.

Abstract

This study analyzes Keramat (2009), an Indonesian horror film directed by Monty Tiwa, through its narrative, supernatural elements, and social themes. While horror films are increasingly popular in Indonesia, Keramat stands out for integrating Javanese mysticism with modern storytelling in a found footage format. It tells the story of a Jakarta-based film crew set to shoot a movie in Yogyakarta that encounters supernatural forces, blending local beliefs and eerie sounds to create an immersive horror experience. This qualitative research examines how Keramat (2009) reflects the tension between modernity and traditional spirituality in Indonesian society. By exploring setting, plot, and characterization, this research highlights the film’s role in portraying the persistence of Javanese mystical beliefs in contemporary Indonesia and its impact on Indonesian horror cinema. Through themes of supernatural possession and the clash of urban lifestyles with sacred rural traditions, the film underscores the cultural importance of respecting local customs and provides a compelling narrative that engages audiences while deepening their understanding of cultural identity.

Abstract

This study explores the role of cultural supernaturalism in Indonesian horror films, focusing on the 2018 film Nini Thowok, which is based on Javanese folklore. The study aims to examine how traditional spiritual beliefs and modern narratives intersect in Indonesian horror, particularly through the symbolism of the nini thowok doll. Using a qualitative approach, the study analyzes the film’s narrative, setting, and characters to uncover the broader cultural themes it represents. The research findings suggest that Nini Thowok not only uses supernatural elements for horror but also reflects the social tensions between tradition and modernization in Indonesia. The film’s depiction of ancestral debt and spiritual responsibility highlights the enduring influence of folklore in modern cinema, offering insight into how these themes resonate with Indonesian audiences. The study concludes that the integration of folklore in Nini Thowok contributes to the global appeal of Indonesian horror films while preserving cultural identity.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the factors contributing to the popularity of KKN di Desa Penari (2022) from a social and cultural perspective. Using qualitative methods, the researcher examines various narrative elements within the film that reflect social and cultural themes, drawing on Lévi-Strauss's structural theory for analysis. The findings reveal that the film’s popularity is rooted in its depiction of local myths, beliefs, and values, such as customs, human relationships with nature, and the supernatural. Additionally, the film modernizes traditional myths, making them resonate with contemporary audiences. This research contributes to the understanding of how horror films can serve as a medium for preserving and communicating cultural myths within the Indonesian context.

Abstract

This study explores the complex relationship between family dynamics, supernatural beliefs, and the consequences of greed as depicted in the Indonesian horror film Di Ambang Kematian (2023). The film, directed by Azhar Kinoi Lubis, tells the tragic story of Nadia, who falls victim to her father's ritual search for wealth and reveals a moral stupidity driven by greed. The study investigated how a character's emotional response to loss and greed develops throughout the story using qualitative analysis and Elisabeth Kübler-Ross' five-stage grief theory. These results suggest that supernatural elements serve as metaphors for internal conflicts, illustrating the negative effects of materialism on family relationships. This study places Di Ambang Kematian as an important object about the dark aspects of human nature and cultural attitudes towards greed and helps to understand modern Indonesian horror cinema as a representation of fear and moral dilemma.

Abstract

This study explores the representation of gender stereotypes and the experiences of transgender individuals in the Indonesian film Lovely Man (2011), directed by Teddy Soeriaatmadja. Using a qualitative narrative analysis, the research examines how the film portrays societal norms, discrimination, and personal identity through the relationship between Syaiful, a transgender woman, and her daughter, Cahaya. Guided by Judith Butler’s (1990) theory of gender performativity and Michel Foucault’s (1978) discourse on power, the analysis reveals how the film challenges traditional gender expectations and critiques systemic marginalization. Through visual, narrative, and dialogic elements, Lovely Man exposes the emotional and social toll of stereotyping while affirming the resilience and humanity of marginalized individuals. The film’s nuanced portrayal of gender identity and familial acceptance fosters empathy and encourages viewers to question societal biases. Although the study is limited to a single film, it highlights the transformative potential of cinema in addressing gender-based discrimination. The findings suggest that Indonesian cinema can play a vital role in promoting inclusive narratives and reshaping cultural understandings of gender and identity.

Abstract

This study examines The LEGO Ninjago Movie as a cultural text that embodies the principles of cultural hybridization in a globalized media landscape. Grounded in Homi Bhabha’s theory of the Third Space, the analysis highlights how the film blends traditional East Asian motifs with Western narrative conventions to construct a hybrid cultural identity. By focusing on the characters of Lloyd and Garmadon, the film presents a nuanced exploration of the tension between individual identity formation and the constraints of inherited cultural roles. The narrative and visual elements create a metaphorical space where diverse cultural elements intersect, critique, and transform one another. In doing so, The LEGO Ninjago Movie not only bridges cultural divides but also contributes to ongoing conversations about transnational identity, cultural negotiation, and the role of popular media as a site for intercultural dialogue and mutual understanding.

Abstract

This study examines social class discrimination as depicted in the Indonesian film Bumi Manusia (2019), directed by Hanung Bramantyo. Adapted from Pramoedya Ananta Toer's novel, the narrative unfolds in the Dutch East Indies during the late 19th century and portrays the complexities of colonial society. Utilizing qualitative methods, the research analyzes dialogues and scenes involving Minke, a young Javanese student, and other characters to reveal instances of discrimination and stratification. The findings highlight the pervasive inequalities of colonial society, from derogatory terms to systemic injustice rooted in racial and social hierarchies. Through Allport's theory of discrimination and Theodorson's social class framework, the study underscores the deep-seated biases and prejudices of the era, which continue to resonate in contemporary society. By engaging with these themes, the film prompts critical reflections on social injustice, urging viewers to address such inequities in both historical and modern contexts.
