Abstract

Considered as writing back to the Empire, postcolonial writing by young indigenous Australian offers different insight and perspective of their identity. One of postcolonial tendencies is re-define their own experience of space and place in contemporary Australia. Mobility and travel become method on experiencing the ancestor’s land. Many of Australian indigenous writing is about mobility, both physical and non-physical. This paper aims to elaborate mobility and mode of resistance in Tara June Winch’ Swallow the Air as young Australian Indigenous writing.Swallow the Air portrays journey of a young half-Indigenous descent across Australia. The journey is an attempt to translate past stories of Indigenous knowledge to the modern-day Australia. Instead of encountering the authentic, she finds out the long-lost landscape, tradition, mythology, and community. The travel narrative depicted in this novel is the contestation between the subjective expectation and objective reality. Lingering between fact and fiction, travel writing is a negotiation between the objective reality and subjective representation. By focusing on writer’s representation on the travel narrative, this paper aims to elaborate how mobility becomes mode of resistance. This research shows that othering occurs not only to the strange geography, people, and culture, but also inner strangeness to the self; a half European-Wiradjuri descent. Her encounters and dialogs to various landscapes and communities searching for home narrates metaphor of survival. The travel narrative accommodates the mobility, which offers a resistance toward fixation of identity—binary opposition between Indigenous and West. Other than spatial othering, Swallow the Air shows the tendency of temporal differentiation, comparing the past utopian fantasy with modern-day Australia. Melancholia occurs as the central theme of the journey as the failure to fulfill the utopian expectation—the loss of authentic Indigenous land, people, and culture. The mode of resistance offered in this melancholic travel narrative is the effort of preserving what is left—from the authentic utopian fantasy—Indigenous knowledge, inheritance, and memories, both personal and communal. Keywords: Mobility, Travel Writing, Indigenous, Australia, Postcolonial

Abstract

Abstract

Upstone (2009) in his book Spatial Politics in the Postcolonial Novel in the section Shifting Scale proposes alternatives to free themselves from the colonial construction that has taken root, namely the concept of langer than nation and smaller than nation. The nation is the result of the struggle to continue colonial construction so that the two alternative goals of self-liberation from colonial construction are the same, namely to dissolve national boundaries which are the result of the construction of colonialism. This paper will discuss the short story "Clara Atawa Wanita Yang Diperkosa" by Seno Gumira Ajidarma in the context of post-space and its relationship with the nation. The author will describe the effect that occurs from the unification of local spaces into a nation that occurs in this short story. Furthermore, the author will describe the alternative solutions to the concept of nation which is a colonial construction. The conclusion of the short story "Clara Atawa Wanita Yang Diperkosa" is that the continuation of nation and nationalism which is a colonial construction shows its negativity, namely violations of human rights (murder, rape, and looting of ethnic Chinese), so in other words the smaller scale in the end always submits. in the nation which is a colonial construction. So that the best alternative in the context of this short story is to use the concept of smaller than nation in which Clara's character returns to the particular space or local space. Abstract

This essay looks into the picture books of Hans Wilhem’s Bunny Trouble (1985) and Bad, Bad Bunny Trouble (1994), which depict the non-binary gender aspects of the main character, Bunny. The two picture books portray Bunny as a boy who possesses and demonstrates both masculine and feminine characteristics concurrently. This issue criticizes the rigid definition of traditional gender binary that had been inculcated and constructed in the society (Butler, 1990). By paying attention to the narrative and illustrative elements of the picture books, this essay sheds lights on how Bunny and other supporting characters fervently delineate that gender as fluid aspects rather than rigid characteristics that cannot be possessed and demonstrated by the main character and other characters as well. Keywords: gender aspects, gender-fluid character, picture books

Abstract

This study aimed at discovering the depiction of cultural marginalization and characters’ resistance in N.H Senzai’s Shooting Kabul novel. The characters of the novel that are Fadi and the member of his family were described experiencing the domination and alienation as the Eastern people. The characters as a minority are marginalized from the society because of the differences in culture. These differences motivate the major society to create a social class, and place the characters in the lower class as a confirmation that they are not equal. The characters judged by their inherent identity, not by their ability. Therefore, the conflict between the characters and the majority becomes a portrayal of cultural marginalization in society. Edward Said’s theory in the concept of Orientalism was used to uncover the issue in Shooting Kabul. The theory discuss about the West as the Occident that dominate the East as the Orient. Furthermore, this study used descriptive qualitative method by describing and analyzing the dialogues and the narrations of the story in the novel. The result of this study described that cultural marginalization was formed by the domination and alienation of the Western people to discriminate the Eastern people. In addition, the study revealed the characters’ resistance as the response of the Western discrimination through silence and fight back.
