Abstract

lndoiiesiaii literary writing today appears to containconsi-derable adoption and actualization of mythologicalstories coming fiom various parts of the country and fiomabroad. Goenawan Mo-hammad and Sapardi Djoko Damonoare the foremost Indonesian poets now considered 'pioneers"in actualizing mythological stories in poetry. A study thereforeaims at showing ( I ) the mythological elements actualizedin their poetly, (2) the forms of the hypograms of thoseelements, and (3) tlie functions of tlie actualization of thoseelements. The sources of the data for this study areGoellawan's and Sapardi's poems published in an anthol-OL3'.The result oftlie study sho\vs that mythological elementsactualized in the poelns come from various mythologies inthe country which include stories of ~~~trj.crrPiagn, ji,Anglingdatma, and Btrhutl Trrntrh./cru~ain d from those abroadwhich include stories of Iskandar Zulharnain, Serihu SuluMolarii, and classic Greece. Though relatively not many, thepoems are considered important as they reappear in laterpublications and the titles of some are even used for thosepublications. The poems containing elements of mythologicalstories as hypograms generally continue to use the conventionsof the mythology transfol~nedI.t indicates the twopoets' acceptance and response to mythology; they treat itas it is as sotilething factual. The mythological elements actualizedin the poelns are made to fuliction either as materialsto support the theme or as materials for comparison, symbolization, and cul-tural reference. Their use as support tothe theme can be regarded as offering another form ofstorytellingand their use in the other ways can be regarded asenrichment of poetical expressions.

Social reality shows that the i~npressiona bout the performanceof the bureaucracy is that it is rigid. centralized. untouchedby change, and inefficient. However. the presentera ofeconomic and informational globalization and the rapiddevelopment of science, technology, and art demand thatthere are also changes in the administration system thatsuppol-ts the bureaucracy. Therefore, there needs to be areorientation of the bureaucracy to make it more creative. The changes in need of attention are, among others. 1.the changes of the form and structure of the bureaucracy which are stable-mechanical into those which are organicadaptable,2. the changes of the principles producing classicmanagement into those producing new public management, and 3. the changes in the form of decentralization/redistribution of power to the people to encourage theirheightened pasticipation in all aspects of development. The university as an agent of reformation and producerof quality bureaucrats also has to change to be synchronouswith the attempted changes above. Therefore, changesin the curriculum need to be made to make it more adaptableand a university managerial system that stimulates creativeattitude needs to be adopted and developed.

Many factors affect learners' performance in learningmathematics. One is self-confidence, which is an importanttopic for discussion. Some researches have revealed thatlearners whose self-confidence is high have a low level ofanxiety in mathematics and vice versa. ..Learners' self-confidence in mathematics is their ownperception about their ability or competence in doing mathematics(e.g., in studying or doing tests on mathematics).Studies on genius reveal that most successfil original thinkershave been characterized with a high degree of self-confidence.Self-confidence can contribute to learners' achievenient,Improvements on learners' self-confidence can be doneby shoring up their self-image, self-esteem, and self-worth.especially when they fail their mathematics examination orbecome the objects of others' mockery or pressure.
