Landscapes are visible and integrative social-ecological systems with variable spatial and temporal dimensions. They have expressive aesthetic, natural, and cultural qualities that are perceived and valued by people in multiple ways and invite actions resulting in landscape change. Landscapes are increasingly urban in nature and ecologically and culturally sensitive to changes at local through global scales. Multiple disciplines and perspectives are required to understand landscapes and align social and ecological values to ensure the sustainability of landscapes. The journal is based on the premise that landscape science linked to planning and design can provide mutually supportive outcomes for people and nature. Landscape science brings landscape ecology and urban ecology together with other disciplines and cross-disciplinary fields to identify patterns and understand social-ecological processes influencing landscape change. Landscape planning brings landscape architecture, urban and regional planning, landscape and ecological engineering, and other practice-oriented fields to bear in processes for identifying problems and analyzing, synthesizing, and evaluating desirable alternatives for landscape change. Landscape design brings plans, designs, management prescriptions, policies and other activities and form-giving products to bear in effecting landscape change. The implementation of landscape planning and design also generates new patterns of evidence and hypotheses for further research, providing an integral link with landscape science and encouraging transdisciplinary collaborations to build robust knowledge and problem solving capacity.

Abstract

Tabanan City Park is located around settlements and main road, yet the park seems deserted at certain times. It is revealed that most of the park’s surface has construction residual materials, lack of basic facilities, and the plants were not maintained. This study aims to identify the existing condition of the park, and create a redesign concept of the park, with consideration of people’s perceptions and preferences regarding the comfort they feel when they are in the park. This study uses survey research methods. After analysing the data, a synthesis was made to compose a redesign concept that able to increase the beauty, comfort and safety of Tabanan City Park. The main concept of this study is “Open Space for All”, meaning an open space for all positive activity that caters to all levels of society. The concept of space in this study is divided into 3 (three) spaces, namely reception space, passive, and active engagement space. Facilities added to the design are hardscapes such as children’s playground, outdoor gym, and toilets, also softscape such as flower beds, shrubs, and shade trees.

Abstract

Dauh Puri Kaja Village, located in the North Denpasar District of Bali, is the village with the highest population density in the district. This has resulted in Dauh Puri Kaja Village being dominated by built-up areas, consisting mostly of residential settlements with moderate to high building base coefficients, as well as commercial areas such as shophouses and office buildings. This research aimed to determine the influence of land cover types on the level of thermal comfort in Dauh Puri Kaja Village based on the Temperature Humidity Index (THI). The method used in this research was a survey method with quantitative descriptive data. The research stages included preparation, inventory, analysis, synthesis, and recommendations. The results showed that thermal conditions in DauhPuri Kaja Village were generally uncomfortable, with an average daily THI of 29.7. The existing land cover in the village consisted of 70% paved surfaces, 25% green open space, and 5% water bodies. Therefore, to achieve ideal thermal comfort with a target THI value of 26, this study recommends increasing green open space by 21.54 hectares, or 20% of the total area of Dauh Puri Kaja Village. This recommendation was based on the results of a linear regression analysis, which identified a correlation between thermal comfort levels and land cover. The addition of green open space could be realized through the development of community parks and the regulation of yard usage.

Abstract

One of the tourism areas renowned for its coastal tourism is Bali. The main attraction of Bali is its natural beauty, with the most popular natural tourist attractions being beaches/oceans. Many favorite tourist spots are found in Kuta. Tourism development tends to focus on the construction and development of tourist attractions without paying much attention to the sustainability of the attractions themselves. The purpose of this study is to determine the quality landscape in the beach area of Kuta District and provide landscape development recommendations to improve its quality. This study focused on finding recommendations that can be implemented to preserve the natural attractions present on the beach. The method used in this study is a descriptive method with a quantitative approach, utilizing observation and literature studies for data collection. Data were obtained through observations and processed using the ‘CSES 2018 V1’ program. The research results show that the five beaches in Kuta District, such as Seminyak Beach (D = -0.65), Legian Beach (D = -0.66), Kuta Beach (D = -0.66), Kelan Beach (D = -0.80), and Kedonganan Beach (D = -1.05), have highly similar landscape characteristics. Based on the classification of D values using the CSES method, these five beaches fall into Class V beaches (D < 0.00), which are described as highly unattractive urban areas.

Abstract

K.H. Hasyim Asy'ari as the only road segment that has a median in Tulungagung Regency does not yet have an arrangement that is in accordance with road landscape guidelines in Indonesia. This affects the beauty of the road landscape as well as the comfort and safety of road users. Based on these problems, this study aims to determine the development of landscape potential and create a landscape design for Jalan K.H. Hasyim Asy'ari, Tulungagung Regency. This study uses a survey method, with data collection techniques through literature study, observation, and interviews. The design plan for this road landscape refers to government regulations, adopting local culture, such as adding Reog Kendang statue ornaments placed at the beginning and end of the median and the pedestrian lamp post design that transforms the typical batik motif of Tulungagung. Determination of plants is carried out to create a design that is safe, does not endanger road users, is comfortable, and beautiful, it must take into account various considerations such as ecological conditions, plant groups, plant forms, plant age, and plant criteria. The landscape design recommendations are expected to be input for the Tulungagung Regency government to develop road landscapes as green open space for roads.

Abstract

Open space landscape planning plays an important role in supporting educational functions within the Kornita High School environment. Kornita High School is the only secondary school located within the campus of IPB University (Bogor Agricultural University), in Dramaga, Bogor. As the school's range of activities becomes increasingly diverse, the demand for space continues to grow. Several issues have emerged, including limited parking areas, building damage caused by sports activities, and the presence of venomous animals and wild primates. These problems stem from the lack of proper spatial planning based on landscape architectureprinciples, particularly in the management of open spaces. This study adopts a student activity-based approach to improve the accuracy of planning. The objective is to identify, analyze, and propose planning solutions that support educational activities at Kornita High School, based on the planning theory of Simon and Starke. The research method employed is a survey, utilizing both qualitative and quantitative descriptive analyses. Data collection was conducted through observation, interviews, and literature review. Observations reveal that abandoned open spaces—lacking routine maintenance such as pruning—have contributed to the presence of wild animals. Interviews indicate that comfort and safety in parking areas and sports fields need improvement, and that studentsrequire open spaces for artistic and creative activities. The study resulted in a site plan developed under the concept of a “Learning Resource,” which is manifested through the inclusion of greenhouses, fruit gardens, outdoor learning areas, green corners, sports fields, and small-scale (alit) theaters.
