Landscapes are visible and integrative social-ecological systems with variable spatial and temporal dimensions. They have expressive aesthetic, natural, and cultural qualities that are perceived and valued by people in multiple ways and invite actions resulting in landscape change. Landscapes are increasingly urban in nature and ecologically and culturally sensitive to changes at local through global scales. Multiple disciplines and perspectives are required to understand landscapes and align social and ecological values to ensure the sustainability of landscapes. The journal is based on the premise that landscape science linked to planning and design can provide mutually supportive outcomes for people and nature. Landscape science brings landscape ecology and urban ecology together with other disciplines and cross-disciplinary fields to identify patterns and understand social-ecological processes influencing landscape change. Landscape planning brings landscape architecture, urban and regional planning, landscape and ecological engineering, and other practice-oriented fields to bear in processes for identifying problems and analyzing, synthesizing, and evaluating desirable alternatives for landscape change. Landscape design brings plans, designs, management prescriptions, policies and other activities and form-giving products to bear in effecting landscape change. The implementation of landscape planning and design also generates new patterns of evidence and hypotheses for further research, providing an integral link with landscape science and encouraging transdisciplinary collaborations to build robust knowledge and problem solving capacity.

Abstract

Pura Taman Ayun is one of the remaining historical relics of the former Mengwi Kingdom, located in Mengwi Village, Mengwi District, Badung Regency, Bali. The site features a forest situated to the north of the temple, currently functioning as a hydrological forest. Given its ecological significance, this study aims to analyze the diversity of vegetation which intended to serve as a guideline for the management and conservation Pura Taman Ayun forest area. A combination of observation, interviews, and literature review was employed, with research stages including data inventory, processing, and analysis. The forest was divided into four research plots, and vegetation was classified into four strata: trees, poles, saplings, and seedlings. The Shannon-Wiener Diversity Index (H') indicated that the diversity levels in the tree and seedling strata were moderate, while the pole and sapling strata showed low diversity. The highest Importance Value Index (IVI) was Mangifera indica for the tree stratum, Bambusa vulgaris for the pole stratum, Ptychosperma macarthurii for the sapling stratum, and Areca catechu for the seedling stratum. Based on the analysis, human activity and the adaptive capacity of vegetation may influence the high or low vegetation diversity in Pura Taman Ayun forest. Several rare species with low individual counts were also identified, highlighting the need for conservation planning to prevent extinction.

Abstract

Urban expansion significantly alters surface characteristics, leading to changes in albedo and land surface temperature (LST) that contribute to the urban heat island phenomenon. This study aims to monitor the intensity of built-up land in Jakarta using the Modified Built-up Index (MBUI) and to analyze its relationship with surface albedo and LST over a ten-year period (2014–2024). Landsat-8 data were processed in Google Earth Engine to retrieve MBUI, albedo, and LST. The results reveal that MBUI and LST are negatively correlated, as expected, while MBUI–albedo and LST–albedo exhibit positive correlations, which contradict many previous studies. These findings suggest that built-up materials in Jakarta generally have higher albedo compared to vegetation and water bodies, a condition that may differ from other urban contexts. This highlights the unique role of material composition and urban morphology in shaping the city’s thermal environment. Overall, the study demonstrates the effectiveness of MBUI for monitoring urban built-up intensity and highlights the importance of integrating material properties, vegetation, and urban form to better understand and mitigate UHI impacts.

Abstract

Revitalization Guidelines for the Old Town of Mentok, West Bangka Regency, as a Heritage City. West Bangka Regency has been designated as a heritage city due to its long history, particularly in the Old Town of Mentok. However, the area is poorly maintained and lacks clear zoning. This study aims to analyze the establishment of revitalization zones, the aspects influencing revitalization, and formulate revitalization guidelines for the area. The methods used include qualitative descriptive analysis, delineation analysis, and the Delphi method. The analysis results indicate that the Old Town of Mentok consists of three clusters: the European Cluster, the Malay Cluster, and the Chinese Cluster. The revitalization zones are divided into core zones, supporting zones, and buffer zones. Aspects influencing revitalization include physical aspects (environmental quality, heritage quality, infrastructure, facilities, and cluster circulation) as well as socio-cultural and policy aspects (community activities, public awareness and involvement in heritage preservation, cultural values, local community engagement, government roles, ownership status, and natural disasters). The revitalization guidelines based on physical aspects involve maintaining land use functions in the core zone while allowing changes in the supporting and buffer zones. Meanwhile, socio-cultural and policy-based guidelines include raising public awareness about heritage value in the supporting and buffer zones and implementing policies for the protection, development, and utilization of heritage in all zones. Abstract

Dauh Puri Kaja Village, located in the North Denpasar District of Bali, is the village with the highest population density in the district. This has resulted in Dauh Puri Kaja Village being dominated by built-up areas, consisting mostly of residential settlements with moderate to high building base coefficients, as well as commercial areas such as shophouses and office buildings. This research aimed to determine the influence of land cover types on the level of thermal comfort in Dauh Puri Kaja Village based on the Temperature Humidity Index (THI). The method used in this research was a survey method with quantitative descriptive data. The research stages included preparation, inventory, analysis, synthesis, and recommendations. The results showed that thermal conditions in DauhPuri Kaja Village were generally uncomfortable, with an average daily THI of 29.7. The existing land cover in the village consisted of 70% paved surfaces, 25% green open space, and 5% water bodies. Therefore, to achieve ideal thermal comfort with a target THI value of 26, this study recommends increasing green open space by 21.54 hectares, or 20% of the total area of Dauh Puri Kaja Village. This recommendation was based on the results of a linear regression analysis, which identified a correlation between thermal comfort levels and land cover. The addition of green open space could be realized through the development of community parks and the regulation of yard usage.
