Abstract

This research examines the existence of Indonesian literature amidst the transformative currents of globalization and modernity. This phenomenon presents dual challenges in the form of global market hegemony, dominated by translated works, and a shift in literary culture driven by the advancement of digital technology. The purpose of this article is to critically analyze the challenges faced, the adaptation strategies developed by authors and literary industry stakeholders, and their implications for the position and form of contemporary Indonesian literature. Employing a qualitative approach with a descriptive-analytical design, this research utilizes library research on selected literary works from the 2005-2025 period and relevant secondary sources. The findings indicate that Indonesian literature faces significant pressure from market competition and the fragmentation of reader attention caused by digital media. However, authors are responding creatively through strategies of genre hybridization—blending local content with global formats—and leveraging digital platforms to build communities and market their work independently. The study concludes that the existence of Indonesian literature is not under threat, but is rather undergoing a transformation into a more hybrid, dynamic, and digitally integrated form, wherein its sustainability depends on the ability of its ecosystem to creatively negotiate between local and global forces.

Abstract

This article examines the fundamental role of rituals and traditions as performative mechanisms in the construction and affirmation of cultural identity within Indonesia's pluralistic society. Through a qualitative approach with an ethnographic design, this research focuses its analysis on two contrasting case studies: the communal death ritual of Ngaben in Bali and the familial life-cycle tradition of Tedak Siten in Java. The findings indicate that despite their differences in scale and context, both practices function as vital arenas where values, cosmology, and social bonds are articulated and reinforced. Ngaben constructs a collective identity through public participation and communal solidarity, while Tedak Siten instills the foundation of cultural identity at the individual and family level from an early age. This study concludes that ritual is not merely a static heritage but a dynamic and adaptive "identity in action," which actively reproduces and negotiates cultural meaning amidst contemporary challenges, serving as an essential pillar for the continuity of Indonesia's cultural diversity.

Abstract

Communication is often narrowly conceived as a mere process of information exchange. Departing from this perspective, this article argues that communication is a fundamental cultural practice through which social reality is constructed and negotiated. Through the lens of cultural anthropology, this study aims to analyze the inextricable link between language, symbols, and meaning within a community. The study employs a qualitative approach, using ethnographic methods among the Dayak ‘Sungai Emas’ Indigenous community in Kalimantan (Borneo). The findings reveal three main points: first, the existence of 'tutur bertuah' (efficacious speech), where language in ritual contexts functions performatively to create reality; second, ritual symbols possess multivocal properties, condensing complex social and cosmological meanings; and third, meaning is dynamic and actively negotiated through communicative competence in social practices such as musyawarah adat (customary deliberation). This study concludes that language and symbols are not merely tools for communication but are the very foundation of a society's social order and worldview. This analysis underscores the importance of an interpretive approach to deeply understand the diversity of human communicative practices.

Abstract

Regional literature is a fundamental pillar of Nusantara's cultural identity, embodying local wisdom and collective memory. However, its existence is now under serious threat from globalization and language shift, leading to a disruption in intergenerational transmission. This article aims to analyze the urgency and strategies for revitalizing regional literature as an effort to preserve cultural identity. Using a qualitative method based on a library research approach, this study synthesizes various scholarly literature to construct a comprehensive conceptual framework. The findings indicate that a passive preservation approach is no longer adequate. An effective revitalization strategy must be holistic, resting on three main pillars: integration into formal education, innovation through digital platforms, and the empowerment of local communities as the primary agents. The revitalization of regional literature is not merely an act of heritage preservation but a strategic investment to enrich the nation's intellectual treasury and strengthen its identity, grounded in the spirit of Bhinneka Tunggal Ika (Unity in Diversity).

Abstract

This article explores the dialectical relationship between Indonesian literature and social change through historical and contemporary reflections. Using a qualitative-interpretive approach and the framework of the sociology of literature, this study analyzes key literary works from various significant periods, ranging from the national awakening era, the New Order, to the post-Reformasi (Reformation) era. The analysis reveals that Indonesian literature functions not only as a passive mirror reflecting social reality but also as an active agent that shapes discourse, voices criticism, and even articulates resistance against hegemonic power. From its role in shaping national identity, serving as a voice of subtle resistance, to its current exploration of the complexities of gender, identity, and modernity, Indonesian literature has proven to be both a barometer and a vital space for the nation's socio-cultural discourse.
