This research examines the existence of Indonesian literature amidst the transformative currents of globalization and modernity. This phenomenon presents dual challenges in the form of global market hegemony, dominated by translated works, and a shift in literary culture driven by the advancement of digital technology. The purpose of this article is to critically analyze the challenges faced, the adaptation strategies developed by authors and literary industry stakeholders, and their implications for the position and form of contemporary Indonesian literature. Employing a qualitative approach with a descriptive-analytical design, this research utilizes library research on selected literary works from the 2005-2025 period and relevant secondary sources. The findings indicate that Indonesian literature faces significant pressure from market competition and the fragmentation of reader attention caused by digital media. However, authors are responding creatively through strategies of genre hybridization—blending local content with global formats—and leveraging digital platforms to build communities and market their work independently. The study concludes that the existence of Indonesian literature is not under threat, but is rather undergoing a transformation into a more hybrid, dynamic, and digitally integrated form, wherein its sustainability depends on the ability of its ecosystem to creatively negotiate between local and global forces.

This article examines the fundamental role of rituals and traditions as performative mechanisms in the construction and affirmation of cultural identity within Indonesia's pluralistic society. Through a qualitative approach with an ethnographic design, this research focuses its analysis on two contrasting case studies: the communal death ritual of Ngaben in Bali and the familial life-cycle tradition of Tedak Siten in Java. The findings indicate that despite their differences in scale and context, both practices function as vital arenas where values, cosmology, and social bonds are articulated and reinforced. Ngaben constructs a collective identity through public participation and communal solidarity, while Tedak Siten instills the foundation of cultural identity at the individual and family level from an early age. This study concludes that ritual is not merely a static heritage but a dynamic and adaptive "identity in action," which actively reproduces and negotiates cultural meaning amidst contemporary challenges, serving as an essential pillar for the continuity of Indonesia's cultural diversity.

Communication is often narrowly conceived as a mere process of information exchange. Departing from this perspective, this article argues that communication is a fundamental cultural practice through which social reality is constructed and negotiated. Through the lens of cultural anthropology, this study aims to analyze the inextricable link between language, symbols, and meaning within a community. The study employs a qualitative approach, using ethnographic methods among the Dayak ‘Sungai Emas’ Indigenous community in Kalimantan (Borneo). The findings reveal three main points: first, the existence of 'tutur bertuah' (efficacious speech), where language in ritual contexts functions performatively to create reality; second, ritual symbols possess multivocal properties, condensing complex social and cosmological meanings; and third, meaning is dynamic and actively negotiated through communicative competence in social practices such as musyawarah adat (customary deliberation). This study concludes that language and symbols are not merely tools for communication but are the very foundation of a society's social order and worldview. This analysis underscores the importance of an interpretive approach to deeply understand the diversity of human communicative practices.

Regional literature is a fundamental pillar of Nusantara's cultural identity, embodying local wisdom and collective memory. However, its existence is now under serious threat from globalization and language shift, leading to a disruption in intergenerational transmission. This article aims to analyze the urgency and strategies for revitalizing regional literature as an effort to preserve cultural identity. Using a qualitative method based on a library research approach, this study synthesizes various scholarly literature to construct a comprehensive conceptual framework. The findings indicate that a passive preservation approach is no longer adequate. An effective revitalization strategy must be holistic, resting on three main pillars: integration into formal education, innovation through digital platforms, and the empowerment of local communities as the primary agents. The revitalization of regional literature is not merely an act of heritage preservation but a strategic investment to enrich the nation's intellectual treasury and strengthen its identity, grounded in the spirit of Bhinneka Tunggal Ika (Unity in Diversity).

This article explores the dialectical relationship between Indonesian literature and social change through historical and contemporary reflections. Using a qualitative-interpretive approach and the framework of the sociology of literature, this study analyzes key literary works from various significant periods, ranging from the national awakening era, the New Order, to the post-Reformasi (Reformation) era. The analysis reveals that Indonesian literature functions not only as a passive mirror reflecting social reality but also as an active agent that shapes discourse, voices criticism, and even articulates resistance against hegemonic power. From its role in shaping national identity, serving as a voice of subtle resistance, to its current exploration of the complexities of gender, identity, and modernity, Indonesian literature has proven to be both a barometer and a vital space for the nation's socio-cultural discourse.

This study aims to analyze the forms, types, and functions of directive speech acts in teacher–student classroom interaction from a pragmatic perspective. The research employed a qualitative approach using a descriptive method. The data consisted of spoken utterances collected during classroom teaching and learning activities through observation, audio-video recording, and note-taking techniques. Data analysis was conducted by identifying and classifying directive speech acts based on Searle’s speech act theory while considering the contextual aspects of the utterances. The findings reveal that directive speech acts are the most dominant type used by teachers, with commands and instructions occurring most frequently. In terms of linguistic forms, directive speech acts are realized through imperative, declarative, and interrogative sentences. The use of directive speech acts is influenced by classroom conditions, instructional objectives, and students’ responses. This study concludes that the varied use of directive speech acts combined with politeness strategies plays a significant role in creating effective and conducive classroom interaction.

Traditional ecological knowledge represents a body of knowledge developed through long-term interactions between local communities and their natural environment. This knowledge encompasses values, norms, and practices that play a significant role in environmental management based on local wisdom. This study aims to examine the role of traditional ecological knowledge in supporting sustainable environmental management. The research employs a qualitative descriptive approach, with data collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation studies. The research participants include customary leaders and community members directly involved in local environmental management practices. Data analysis was conducted thematically through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that traditional ecological knowledge serves as a fundamental guideline for sustainable natural resource utilization, strengthens social cohesion, and helps maintain ecological balance. However, modernization and social change pose significant challenges to the preservation of this knowledge. Therefore, integrating traditional ecological knowledge into modern environmental policies and strengthening the role of local communities are strategic steps toward achieving sustainable environmental management.

This study aims to analyze the representation of social and cultural values in Indonesian novels as a reflection of contemporary modern society. The research employs a qualitative approach using a descriptive-interpretative method within the framework of literary sociology. The data are derived from purposively selected contemporary Indonesian novels and supported by relevant scholarly sources. Data collection techniques include intensive reading and textual documentation of social and cultural values represented in the narratives. The findings reveal that contemporary Indonesian novels represent social values such as social solidarity, class conflict, individualism, and power relations, as well as cultural values including local traditions, modernity, gender roles, and identity crises. These representations reflect the dynamics of social and cultural changes in modern Indonesian society. This study concludes that novels function not only as aesthetic works but also as media for social reflection and critical discourse on contemporary societal realities.

Urban communities constitute social spaces characterized by diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, which encourage the emergence of multilingual communication practices in everyday life. This condition gives rise to the phenomena of code-mixing and code-switching as commonly used communication strategies among speakers. This study aims to examine the forms, functions, and factors influencing the occurrence of code-mixing and code-switching in the communication practices of urban communities. The research employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive design. Data were collected through participant observation, semi-structured interviews, and recording techniques involving urban community members who use more than one language in their interactions. Data analysis was conducted by classifying forms of code-mixing and code-switching and examining their social functions and contextual usage based on sociolinguistic theories. The results indicate that code-mixing is more dominant than code-switching, with word and phrase insertions being the most frequently observed patterns. Indonesian functions as the primary language, combined with regional languages and foreign languages, particularly English. Code-switching occurs in response to changes in participants, situations, and communication purposes. This study concludes that code-mixing and code-switching reflect speakers’ linguistic flexibility and social competence in navigating the dynamics of multilingual communication in urban societies.

This study aims to examine the construction of women and power relations in Indonesian literature using a feminist criticism perspective. Literature is viewed as a medium of social representation that both reflects and shapes societal perceptions of women. This research employs a qualitative approach with textual analysis of Indonesian literary works that position female characters as central elements of the narrative. The research data consist of narrative excerpts, dialogues, and character descriptions analyzed to reveal forms of female representation, mechanisms of patriarchal domination, and strategies of resistance presented in the texts. The findings indicate that women are still frequently constructed in subordinate positions through gender stereotypes and unequal power relations. However, there is a growing tendency for the emergence of female characters who demonstrate critical awareness and agency in confronting patriarchal structures. This study affirms that feminist criticism is a relevant approach for uncovering power relations in literature and for providing a more equitable understanding of women’s representation in the context of Indonesian literature.
