Abstract

Abstract

Kemudian, terdapat berlainan sistem mengenai konsonannya. The Evolution of Brunei Malay’s Phonology Abstract This is a research on Brunei Malay language specifically in the field of phonology. Brunei Malay is one of the languages spoken in Brunei Darussalam. Simanjuntak (1988) stated that there are two Malay languages used in Brunei Darussalam; Brunei Malay Standard and Brunei Malay Dialect. Previous researches found that the vocals in Brunei Malay are /a, i, u/ (Asmah, 1985 and Fatimah Awang Chuchu, 1987). Then, there are different systems on its consonants. Therefore, this study is to analyze the phonological evolution of Brunei Malay. Additionally, researches made before also touch less about vocal clusters, diphthongs, deletion, and addition. Therefore, this study will benefit from documentations as data. The significant of this study is that it is one of the written prove of the evolution on Brunei Malay alongside with the achievements, developments and modernization of the country. The study found that Brunei’s Malay has evolved into a Malay language of six vocal system with addition of vocals /e, ?, o/. Moreover, there are 19 consonants altogether with addition of consonants /q, z/. There are six vocal clusters, namely /ai, au, ia, iu, ua, ui/. Next, there are three diphthongs; three of are /ai, au/ and one addition is /oi/. Then, one consistent deletion found which is deletion of consonant /h/ placed in front of the word in Perambahan Brunei’s data. Lastly, there are two types of addition, which are addition of /?/ and addition of /?/.

Abstract

This bibliometric study aims to illuminate the evolution of the study of political discourse in Brunei over the past decade by (i) identifying current trends in the publication of Brunei’s political discourse, and (ii) determining the dominant theme in scholarly focus within the study of Brunei’s political discourse. To achieve this, performance analysis and scientific mapping were performed using Publish or Perish (PoP) and VOSviewer. Data from Google Scholar were filtered, yielding 165 relevant articles. PoP facilitated performance analysis, while VOSviewer visualized keyword clusters to ensure systematic analyses. Findings from the performance analysis reveal scholars’ interdisciplinary approach, intertwining disciplines such as history, sociology, law, and linguistics in studying political discourse trends. Meanwhile, findings from science mapping provide a comprehensive exploration of thematic convergence through three clusters in the landscape of political discourse studies in Brunei. These clusters highlight dominant themes, such as ‘identity,’ ‘power,’ and ‘religion’ in cluster 1. This exploration significantly contributes to the body of knowledge about political discourse, serving as a valuable resource for scholars, policymakers, and researchers seeking to understand the complex nuances of studying Brunei’s political discourse. Overall, this study not only enhance readers’ understanding of the current state of political discourse research in Brunei but also provide a roadmap for future scholarly inquiry in this dynamic and evolving field.

Abstract

This article examines the text dimension of the President Press Conference of FIFA in Qatar 2022. The objective of the article is to examine the text dimension of the FIFA president's speech at the opening of the FIFA World Cup on November 19th, 2022 by using the theory of Fairclough’s text dimension such as phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics. This article used a descriptive qualitative method and critical discourse analysis approach. The data were taken from the speech of the 2022 FIFA president's speech. The result revealed that the meaning of the FIFA World Cup president’s speech covered the text analysis dimension. First, in the text analysis dimension, Infantino Gramsci’s speech fulfilled the hierarchy of grammatical structures built completely (phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics). In the phonology aspect, it is just used as a rhyme rather than alliteration and assonance. In the morphological aspect, it is used various types of inflectional word classes but did not change the meaning in assembling his speech and the aspects of syntax and semantics frequently appeared, however, the president attempted to show that his statements were grammatically precise and that he effectively conveyed the content of his address through the use of semantics. The highlights are that Infantino created patterns in the way he put his phrases together as a speech producer to satisfy the requirements of the speech hierarchy by having a high level of communication proficiency, or, from a linguistic standpoint, spoken language.
