Abstract

Mental health has become one of the major issues in social development, especially in developing countries, where challenges such as social stigma, lack of resources, and limited access to health services are major barriers. This study aims to explore mental health policies adopted in developing countries and the role of community based health services in supporting the implementation of such policies. The study used a literature review approach to research published in the last 10 years (2013-2023) to identify policies, challenges, and successes in addressing mental health. The results showed that the integration of mental health into primary health services, human resource capacity building, and community-based programs have a significant positive impact in improving access and quality of mental health services. Programs such as WHO's mhGAP, which strengthens the capacity of primary health services to treat mental disorders, have been successfully adopted by developing countries such as Ethiopia, Uganda, and Nepal. In addition, community-based approaches involving the training of mental health cadres have been shown to be effective in detecting and dealing with mental disorders in remote areas, as is the case in India. In Kenya, community-based education campaigns have increased the number of mental health consultations by 30% in the last five years. This success shows that the integration of mental health services at the community level and increased public awareness can improve access and reduce the stigma that prevents people from seeking care. However, the results also highlight the need to strengthen public policy support and reduce stigma against mental health in the community to ensure the sustainability of programs that have been implemented.

Abstract

Background: Hypertension is a prevalent health issue among older adults, significantly increasing their risk of mortality. Hydrotherapy, in conjunction with the recitation of Surah Al-Kahfi (a chapter from the Quran), offers a non-pharmacological approach to blood pressure management. This combined therapy is believed to reduce stress hormones and stimulate the release of endorphins, contributing to blood pressure reduction. This study aimed to investigate the effect of this combined therapy on blood pressure in older adults with hypertension. Methods: A pre-experimental, one-group pre- and post-test design was employed. Participants were recruited using purposive sampling. The study population comprised older adults aged 60-70 years with blood pressure ≥ 140/90 mmHg. Blood pressure measurements were taken using a digital sphygmomanometer, and a standardized operating procedure (SOP) was followed for all interventions. Data was analyzed using the Paired Sample T-test. Results: The findings revealed a statistically significant difference in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure before and after the intervention (p = 0.000). The mean difference in systolic blood pressure was 14.1 mmHg, and the mean difference in diastolic blood pressure was 8.4 mmHg. Conclusion: The combined therapy of hydrotherapy and recitation of Surah Al-Kahfi effectively reduces blood pressure in older adults with hypertension. These findings encourage further exploration of this non-pharmacological approach in managing hypertension among older adults.

Abstract

Prolonged computer typing can lead to chronic trauma, resulting in Myofascial Trigger Point Syndrome (MTrPs). MTrPs is an inflammatory condition of the muscle fascia, characterized by pain described as stabbing, burning, throbbing, cutting, and aching in the loose connective tissue surrounding the muscles. This condition often affects the upper extremity muscles, most commonly the Upper Trapezius. One physiotherapy method used to address MTrPs is exercise therapy with the auto stretching technique. This study aimed to investigate the effect of physiotherapy in the digital era on the delivery of exercise therapy to reduce MTrPs pain in rental workers. This study employed a quasi-experimental design with a Pre and Post Test With Control Group Design. Purposive sampling was used to recruit 16 participants. Auto stretching exercises were performed twice daily for 25 days. Pain was measured using the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). Data normality was assessed using the Shapiro-Wilk test. Hypothesis testing was performed using the Paired Sample T-test, and the Independent T-test was used to compare groups. The results showed a significant reduction in MTrPs pain in rental workers (p = 0.0001; p < 0.05). This indicates that physiotherapy delivered through digital platforms, incorporating exercise therapy with auto stretching, can effectively reduce MTrPs pain in rental workers.
