Abstract

Purpose – Cosmological verses of the Qur’an have long been a point of convergence and tension between Qur’anic exegesis and modern scientific thought. Among these, QS. At-Talaq [65]:12 is unique in referring to the “seven earths” (wa mina al-arḍi mithlahunna). This study aims to compare the interpretations of the concept of the seven earths in the exegeses of Ibn Kathīr and Ibn ‘Āshūr and to examine their epistemological implications for contemporary studies of Qur’anic cosmology. Design/methodology/approach – This study employs a qualitative descriptive-comparative approach based on library research. Primary data consist of the exegetical works of Ibn Kathīr and Ibn ‘Āshūr, which are analyzed through comparative textual analysis to identify differences in interpretive methodology, epistemological orientation, and cosmological paradigms. Findings – The study reveals two fundamentally different interpretive paradigms. Ibn Kathīr, employing the tafsīr bi al-ma’thūr approach, interprets the seven earths literally as layered realms supported by prophetic traditions and reports from the Companions, resulting in a vertically structured metaphysical cosmology. In contrast, Ibn ‘Āshūr adopts a rational-philological approach, interpreting the expression as referring to seven regions or continents based on linguistic analysis and openness to empirical knowledge, thereby constructing a horizontal and empirically oriented cosmological model. These contrasting interpretations demonstrate that cosmological exegesis is shaped not only by the Qur’anic text but also by the epistemological frameworks and intellectual horizons of the exegetes. Research implications/limitations – The study is limited to two major exegetical traditions and does not include broader comparative analysis with contemporary scientific or modern exegetical perspectives. Future research may expand the discussion by incorporating interdisciplinary approaches involving cosmology, philosophy of science, and modern Qur’anic interpretation. Originality/value – This study contributes to the field of Qur’anic cosmology by demonstrating that debates over the concept of the seven earths are fundamentally methodological and epistemological rather than questions of scientific correctness. It offers a balanced framework for fostering constructive dialogue between Qur’anic exegesis and modern science while preserving the epistemic integrity of revelation and remaining open to the advancement of human knowledge.

Abstract

Purpose – Sleep is a fundamental biological necessity recognized in both the Qur’an and contemporary scientific research. The Qur’an refers to sleep through the terms an-naum, denoting natural rest for physical and mental restoration, and subāt, describing deep and restorative sleep that temporarily suspends human activity. This study aims to analyze the terminological meanings of an-naum and subāt in the Qur’an and to examine their relationship with the human body’s detoxification process from the perspective of modern neuroscience. Design/methodology/approach – This study employs a qualitative library-based research design using descriptive-analytical methods. The analysis focuses on QS. Al-Furqān (25): 47 and QS. An-Naba’ (78): 9 through linguistic interpretation (i‘jāz bayānī) and scientific interpretation (i‘jāz ‘ilmī). Relevant literature in Qur’anic exegesis, sleep science, and neuroscience is critically examined to explore the correspondence between Qur’anic concepts and contemporary scientific findings. Findings – The study demonstrates a significant convergence between the Qur’anic concept of sleep and modern scientific understanding of sleep physiology. While an-naum reflects the general biological function of rest, subāt corresponds conceptually to the deep sleep phase, during which restorative processes and brain detoxification mechanisms are most active. The findings indicate that the Qur’an portrays sleep not only as a divine blessing and physiological necessity but also contains scientific indications that are consistent with contemporary explanations of neural recovery and metabolic waste clearance during deep sleep. Research implications/limitations – As a conceptual study based on literature analysis, the findings remain interpretive and have not been validated through empirical biomedical research. Future interdisciplinary studies involving Qur’anic scholarship, neuroscience, and sleep medicine are needed to further examine the proposed conceptual relationship. Originality/value – This study contributes to the growing field of Qur’an and science by integrating Qur’anic semantics with contemporary neuroscience. It offers a novel interpretation of an-naum and subāt as complementary concepts of sleep physiology, enriching the discourse on i‘jāz ‘ilmī while highlighting the importance of sleep quality for both physical and spiritual well-being.

Abstract

Purpose – This study examines the structural dynamics of the military confrontation involving the United States, Israel, and Iran during *Operation Epic Fury* and evaluates its implications for the evolving international order. Drawing on hegemonic transition theory and alliance politics, the study investigates whether the conflict represents a precursor to systemic great-power war or a catalyst for the transformation from a unipolar to a multipolar global system. Design/methodology/approach – The research adopts a qualitative case study approach based on documentary analysis. It integrates theoretical perspectives from hegemonic transition theory and alliance politics to interpret geopolitical developments, alliance behavior, and strategic interactions among major powers. Policy statements, strategic documents, and contemporary geopolitical developments are analyzed to identify emerging patterns in the international system. Findings – The analysis indicates that the conflict has intensified strategic realignments rather than creating the conditions for a conventional global war. The crisis has exposed growing divergences within the transatlantic alliance, reflecting increasing strategic autonomy among several European states. At the same time, Russia and China have adopted distinct strategic responses shaped by their respective geopolitical and economic interests rather than forming a unified anti-Western bloc. The disruption of energy supply routes has further demonstrated the vulnerability of the global economy to regional conflicts, reinforcing the strategic significance of maritime chokepoints and energy security. Research implications/limitations – The study is limited to a single geopolitical case and relies on documentary evidence available during the period examined. Because international crises evolve rapidly, subsequent developments may alter strategic assessments. Future research should incorporate longitudinal analysis and comparative studies of major-power crises. Originality/value – This study contributes to contemporary international relations scholarship by integrating hegemonic transition theory with alliance politics to explain how regional conflicts can accelerate systemic transformation. It argues that the emerging international order is characterized less by renewed bipolarity than by the growing influence of multiple regional powers operating within an increasingly multipolar strategic environment.

Abstract

Purpose – Mahr (dower) constitutes an essential obligation in Islamic marriage and is intended to symbolize commitment rather than impose an economic burden. However, in many contemporary Muslim communities, the increasing value of mahr has become associated with social prestige, potentially creating financial pressure and affecting family relationships. This study examines the relationship between mahr determination and family harmony in Cibeureum District, Tasikmalaya, from the perspective of the sociology of Islamic law. Design/methodology/approach – The study employs a descriptive qualitative approach. Data were collected through field observations and in-depth interviews with community members in Cibeureum District. The findings were analyzed using a sociological approach to Islamic law to explore how religious norms interact with local social values in shaping mahr practices and perceptions of marital harmony. Findings – The study reveals that the practice of demanding high-value mahr has evolved into a social convention driven primarily by modernization, social prestige, and symbolic status rather than customary or religious obligations. While some participants perceive a high mahr as a marker of family honor and marital stability, others argue that family harmony is more closely associated with mutual agreement, affordability, and the absence of coercion in determining the mahr. These findings indicate that the value of mahr itself is not the primary determinant of harmonious family relationships; instead, fairness, mutual consent, and economic capacity play more significant roles. Research implications/limitations – The study is limited to one district and reflects a specific socio-cultural context. Future research may undertake comparative studies across different regions or employ quantitative methods to examine broader patterns of mahr practices and marital outcomes. Originality/value – This study contributes to the sociology of Islamic family law by demonstrating that mahr functions as a socially negotiated institution whose meaning extends beyond legal obligation. It highlights the importance of contextualizing mahr within contemporary social realities and offers practical recommendations for premarital education and policy development through collaboration with local Offices of Religious Affairs (KUA).

Abstract

Purpose– The rapid expansion of digital communication technologies has fundamentally transformed contemporary da‘wah, shifting Islamic outreach from conventional face-to-face preaching toward interactive digital platforms. This study examines the effectiveness of contemporary da‘wah strategies by synthesizing empirical evidence on the factors that influence successful digital Islamic communication and audience engagement across social media environments. Design/methodology/approach– This study employs a qualitative systematic literature review (SLR) methodology. Empirical studies published between 2017 and 2026 were systematically identified, screened, and analyzed using thematic content analysis. The review synthesizes evidence concerning digital da‘wah practices across major social media platforms, with particular attention to communication strategies, audience engagement, technological affordances, and the emerging role of social media handlers. Findings– The review demonstrates that digital platforms—including Facebook, WhatsApp, YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, Telegram, and X—have substantially expanded the reach of Islamic knowledge, strengthened audience participation, and facilitated the formation of virtual religious communities. The effectiveness of contemporary da‘wah is determined by the interaction of several key factors: content quality, preacher credibility, communication competence, digital literacy, audience-centred messaging, platform suitability, and the strategic functions of social media handlers in content production, moderation, audience engagement, and platform management. Nevertheless, challenges such as misinformation, concerns regarding content authenticity, unequal digital access, and limited technological competence continue to constrain online da‘wah effectiveness. Research implications/limitations– As a literature-based study, the findings rely on existing empirical evidence and do not assess the effectiveness of specific digital da‘wah programs. Future research should employ comparative and mixed-methods designs to evaluate digital da‘wah strategies across different cultural, institutional, and technological contexts. Originality/value– This study contributes to contemporary Islamic communication scholarship by providing an integrative synthesis of empirical research on digital da‘wah. It develops a comprehensive framework demonstrating that effective contemporary da‘wah depends on the integration of authentic Islamic principles, strategic communication, technological innovation, digital literacy, and professional social media management, thereby offering practical guidance for scholars, Islamic organizations, and digital content practitioners.

Abstract

Purpose – Juristic disagreement (ikhtilāf) has long been recognized as an inherent characteristic of Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh), reflecting the diversity of scholarly reasoning rather than doctrinal division. This study examines the principal causes of juristic disagreement among classical Muslim scholars and analyzes its epistemological significance for the development and adaptability of Islamic law. Design/methodology/approach – This study employs a qualitative library-based research design using descriptive and analytical methods. Primary and secondary sources in Islamic jurisprudence, uṣūl al-fiqh, and classical legal literature are critically examined to identify the methodological, linguistic, textual, and contextual factors underlying juristic disagreement. A thematic analysis is applied to synthesize recurring patterns across the scholarly tradition. Findings – The study demonstrates that juristic disagreement arises from multiple interconnected factors. These include differences in the authentication and interpretation of Qur’anic and Prophetic texts, linguistic variations within the Arabic language, divergent applications and prioritizations of uṣūl al-fiqh principles, and the influence of local customs (ʿurf) and changing social contexts. Variations in jurists’ intellectual backgrounds, reasoning methods, and access to legal evidence further contribute to differing legal conclusions. Rather than indicating inconsistency, these differences constitute a legitimate and productive feature of Islamic legal methodology that enables Sharīʿah to respond to diverse circumstances across time and place. Research implications/limitations – This study is conceptual and based exclusively on classical juristic literature. It does not investigate the contemporary application of ikhtilāf in modern legal systems. Future research may explore how classical theories of juristic disagreement inform contemporary ijtihād, legal reform, and comparative Islamic jurisprudence. Originality/value – This study contributes to Islamic legal scholarship by synthesizing the principal epistemological foundations of ikhtilāf into an integrated analytical framework. It highlights juristic disagreement as a source of methodological richness, legal flexibility, and intellectual dynamism, thereby reinforcing its enduring significance in the development of Islamic jurisprudence.
