Abstract

Abstract

As the capital city of West Kutai Regency, Sendawar still has a lot of problems relating to clean water supply for its residence. Those problems are caused by the very limited capability of local water authority (PDAM), the worse of environment management and water pollutions. Water pollutions occur because of improper mining activities (gold, silver and coal), domestic wastewater and sediment particles affected by increasing run off coefficient and erosion. Therefore the quality of surface water (River Mahakam) becomes worse and worse. PDAM Problems are not only being able to serve clean water need just for 19% residence in Sendawar, but also the low capability of human resources. There are three ways to solve those problems. Firstly, it is very important to apply a concept “One River One Management” in the Mahakam Catchment Area. Secondly, Application ofwastewater treatment technology must be carried out to reduce the pollutants produced from mining industries and municipal area. The third is by improving the human resource quality, especially in the field of environment and sustainable development.

Abstract

People who were seeking housing in relatively good environment in the fringe area of metropolitant have found themselves experiencing the negative impact of continuing suburban sprawl and housing growth, especially when basic infrastructures and urban services are insufficient. Together with the increasingenvironmental pressure caused by traffic jam and pollution, all of these condition have absolutely been lowering their amenities, then in turn their quality of life. The problems are whether is there any lack of specific steps in formulating the policy and if not, is there any gap beetween knowledge and action in implementingthe policy? This research tries to reveal what exactly the needed processes andntype of strategic planning are to produce to make a Sustainable SettlementnManagement System Modelling possible. The research intended to establish policy model through soft system methodology (SSM), which is considered the most suitable approach to this area, that is characterized by the interwoven ofunstructured problems involving multisectors, multiactors, and multidisciplines. The findings of the research are the need of a better processes in public policy formulation upon the fringe areas of metropolitan, by involving knowledgable persons. Using this mechanism, the research come to the conclusion that astrong policy on developing infrastructure and transportation as well as the provision of social-public facilities within walking distance in an integrated way with the development of housing and settlement in order to maintain the level of amenities are needed. In addition to these findings, community-based organization, such as home-owner asssociation, has to be established in order to allow a bigger room for community participation in implementing the public policy.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThe population growth rate in big cities such as Jakarta and its satellite cities has a correlation that is directly proportional to the level of clean water consumption. The biggest consumption of clean water is generally used for domestic household needs. However, the use of clean water is still not efficient. Therefore, the efficiency of water-saving needs to be carried out by utilizing sources that have not been optimally used, for example, greywater and rainwater. The purpose of this study is to determine the level of water usage in 3 (three) types of housing and the level of efficiency of utilization of domestic wastewater (greywater) and rainfall (CH) in reducing the use of clean water. This research was performed in the Villa Bintang Mas residential area in the City of South Tangerang, the Villa Bintang Mas residential area in the City of Depok, and the Selakopi Hijau/Forestry residential area in the City of Bogor. Data collection was conducted by a series of surveys using a questionnaire on the sample of a household. The results show that the data processing needs of clean water in three residentials range of values between ± 158.84 Liters/person/day up to ± 215.38 Liters/person/day. The level of efficiency of the utilization of greywater and rainwater in reducing the usage of clean water in three housing ranges from 21.12% to 58.47%.Keywords: Domestic Waste, the Use of Clean Water ABSTRAKTingkat pertumbuhan penduduk di kota-kota besar seperti jakarta dan kota-kota satelitnya memiliki korelasi yang berbanding lurus dengan tingkat konsumsi air bersih yang dimanfaatkan oleh masyarakat.
