Abstract

In the Indonesian Islamic Education discourse, the state of political atmosphere influences several policies of Islamic Education. In the post-1998 reform period, the role and institutional development of politics affected the way Indonesian Islamic Education were going through in a positive way. The institutional improvement had shifted Islamic Education from the second-cast of education into a higher level. However, Islamic Education has not been at the centre of both elite and popular attention in Indonesia. Therefore, this paper examines policies in Indonesian Islamic Education which reflects upon the substance of its growing political dynamics. Cultural analysis is used in this paper to examine the root of Islamic Education identity.

Abstract

The existence of Quranic exegesis journalism is a relatively interesting phenomenon. As media content, the field of tafsir is likely to adapt to media routine practices, social systems, and social institution forces wherein the media is produced. In the period 1970-1980, Indonesia’s economic planning and political system had been deeply committed to developmentalist and modernist in orientation, and required social forces, including media and religious institutions, to promote this national goal. This study aims to explore the influence of journalistic practices in shaping the tafsir of the Quran in three magazines in Indonesia published from 1970 to 1980, namely Ashri Magazine, Panji Masyarakat, and Suara Muhammadiyah. The result of the study illustrates that the tafsir of the Quran within observed Islamic magazines adapted to the logic of journalism. Over the course of the period, Islamic magazines carried out Quranic exegesis journalism by defining issues and discourses of developmentalism and modernity as part of policy and public agendas in order to gain legitimacy from the Indonesian Muslim community. Additionally, this study argues that the journalism of tic Quranic interpretation is one of the study fields of the tafsir of the Quran in Indonesia which is relatively unexplored throughout the ages.

Abstract

This paper seeks to analyze the moderate ideology of Muhammadiyah dan NU, popularly known as the champion of Indonesia’s moderate Islam. Questions to be investigated are: to what extent that NU and Muhammadiyah theologically represent moderatism? Is there any such thing as “moderate Islam” in Indonesia? How can a blue-print of moderate Islam be formulated in the context of Indonesian Islam? The underpinning theoretical assumption upon which this paper is based is that the theological formulation of Islamic moderatism developed by NU and Muhammadiyah can no longer accommodate the latest challenges and demands of the era. In the context of Indonesian Islam, therefore, a representative formulation of how moderate Islam can be constructed is badly needed. What NU and Muhammadiyah have demonstrated so far in the landscape of Indonesian Islam, nevertheless, can serve as a stepping stone towards building a more liable formulation of an Indonesian Islam in the future.

Abstract

This study explores the interaction of veiled students, the perceptions of students and lecturers towards them, and the influence of negative stereotypes that circulate on veiled students. The phenomenological approach used in this research is part of qualitative research. Participants are students from the State Islamic Institute of Curup and State Islamic Institute of Bengkulu. Data are analysed, using semantic reduction carried out by identifying important statements from the results of interviews, determining discussion themes, and describing the importance of the entire experience of veiled female students. The results show that the association of veiled students with students and lecturers at Islamic Higher Education of Bengkulu tends to go well and takes place normally. Students' perceptions of veiled students tend to be negative, considering veiling an excessive attitude in dressing. The effect of negative stereotypes on veiled students is that in general it does not affect the decision to veil among students.

Abstract

This paper examines the current landscape of Hadhrami Arab Community in Indonesia. It aims to understand the internal fissures that affect the cohesion within the community. Some scholars contended that the conflicts taking place within the Hadhrami community are due to the Yemeni traditional stratification and nationalist orientation during colonial era. However, they do not include in their analysis the contemporary state of Hadhramis in Indonesia. This paper focuses on the contemporary era and argues that doctrinal contest and competition for religious authority have dominated the dynamics of conflict within Indonesian Hadhrami community. The paper will touch on the debates on the notion of Shi’ism among the so-called sayyids and Salafism among the followers of Al-Irsyad Al-Islamiyyah. It suggests that it is through these two currents of thought that the Hadhrami community in Indonesia not only exercise their power and authority, but also shape and transform their very identity.

Abstract

This paper delves into the distinctive significance and characteristics of Nawawi's linguistic thought within the Malay Muslim sphere, exploring their correlation with his broader Islamic paradigm. Utilizing the theoretical framework of knowledge production and authorship, the study reveals Nawawi's noteworthy contribution to Arabic linguistics in Indonesia. His comprehensive grasp of Islamic sciences infuses a unique discourse into the field, blending Arabic grammar intricacies with ethical and theological dimensions. Despite his profound expertise, Nawawi's impact on Indonesian Muslim society remains inadequately acknowledged. This oversight can be attributed to the prevailing curriculum in Indonesian pesantren, the influential presence of Arab-origin scholars, and restricted access to Nawawi's works. Unveiling this scholarly gap underscores the need for greater recognition of Nawawi's linguistic insights and their integration into the educational fabric of Islamic studies in Indonesia.

Abstract

This paper attempts to answer how Islamic Women define the concept of beauty in Ponds advertisement white beauty facial foam and body lotion on television. This study uses a socio-semiotic approach described through three aspects of social context, namely field, tenor, and mode. It argues that Ponds’ definition of a beauty only refers to physical standards, that is, women who have white skin and use both Ponds White Beauty Facial Foam and Foam Body Lotion. Further, television through Ponds advertising is considered as a commercial institution that supports the main idea of capitalism. However, Islamic women consider beautiful physically and spiritually. It suggests that the beautiful women are those who obey and surrender to Allah SWT. In short, Islamic women do not agree with the meaning of beauty resulted from Ponds White Beauty Facial Foam and Ponds Body Lotion advertisement. Rather, beauty consists of both body and, more importantly, soul.
