This paper aims to discuss the development of pananyaan, a name for Sundanese-Priangan local shaman in terms of continuity and change. Using ethnographical method, it will provide an anthropological account of these elderly people through the investigation of the major shifts of them and their meanings, to the grand narration of Islamization process. The exploration based on the research questions leads to several conclusions. The existence of pananyaan has become primordial nature of the belief toward supernatural being. There are, at least, several major shifts in the origins pananyaan to the present. First, the shift of domestic spiritualism from local spirit to Islamic saints that reflected an elementary form of the intersection of Islam and local customs. Second, the emergence of ahli hikmah, that reflected such an outward appearance in the intersection as represented by several hybrid incantations and supernatural powers. Third, the contemporary shaman, whose Islam and local customs are united in one fashion with the influence of modern determinations. In addition, the still-taking place Islamization has become a challenge for the next development of pananyaan.

There is a growing study concerning various processes of localisation of widely recognised world religions and universalization of local traditions currently, notably associated with the field of religious moderation. One of the issues being stressed is how Islam is able to establish and coexist in harmony with local cultures. This study examines the interaction of Islam with Indonesian indigenous traditions in West Java called Jalawastu, the existence of which continues to present. In other words, this study aims to analyze the religious-cultural lifestyle of the Jalawastu customary community, which have long been practised. A qualitative approach with an ethnographic method was applied. The results of this study illustrate that the relationship between Islam and Jalawastu traditions is in harmony and balance. Those are markedly indicated in the community’s daily life. They are both practising Islamic teachings and performing ancestral traditions. The community’s compliance with their customs brings about the long existence of the traditions even until this modernized era. To sum up, Jalawastu traditions and Islam are the ways through which humanitarian relationships and local wisdom could be reinforced in the era of globalization.

Research on the history of Islam and its dissemination on the island of Maluku have hitherto been lacking analytical depth. This paper tries to fill that gap by analysisng four stages in the development of Islam on the Island, referring to approaches to study Islam and Muslims. First, the stage of integration in which Islam tried to incorporate local values and their ramifications. Second, the stage of war and resistance in which the attempts of Islam to become the dominant power on the region face a strong confrontation from the existing power. Third, the stage of reformation and renewal in which Islam interrogates and evaluates itself so as to present itself within the context of Maluku. Fourth, the stage of modern era in which Islam faces challenges not only from other religions mainly Christianity which is equally strong on the island, but also from modernity and its narratives.

This article explains the mystical practices of Javanese shamans (dukun) called wong pinter and analyzes different types of these practices by comparing definitions, actions, and mystical features discussed in various studies. This article uses field studies and in-depth interviews, the data were analyzed based on theories of mysticism. The study shows that the wong pinter also practices mysticism rooted in Islam and manifests in history especially the history of Islamic mysticism in Indonesia in general and in Java in particular. The study finds that the characteristics of shamans mysticism are substantive, non-formalist, and altruistic. This finding supports the view that shamanism is rooted in Islamic mysticism and is open to discourses of mysticism from other religions. This study does not discuss the level of mystical actions nor does it distinguish categories of mystical practices found in many shaman groups.

Religion and culture are inextricably connected like two sides of the same coin because in understanding the religion properly often requires knowing the culture that shaped it, and vice versa. This paper reports on the research of how Islam has interacted with Balinese Hinduism for several hundred years. Using historical-anthropological study with a phenomenological approach, this study has revealed that religious traditions practiced by Balinese Muslims are identical to the Hinduism-based local culture. It means that the existence of local culture in Bali highly influences Islamic practices, which are certainly distinct from those in the Middle East, especially Saudi of Arabia, as the cradle of Islam. The expressions of Islam are resulted from the dialogue between Islamic traditions with local culture, Hindu tradition in particular, which shapes Balinese’s distinctive Islamic identity that is more progressive, tolerant, and egalitarian.

This study examines the role of Ma’had Aly and Private Islamic Higher Education Institutions (PTKIS) managed by pesantren in Indonesia in strengthening the scientific independence of Islamic boarding schools through intellectualization. The research is based on field observations and interviews conducted at 12 pesantren offering Ma’had Aly and postgraduate programs, analyzed using Creswell’s analytical approach. The findings indicate that Ma’had Aly and PTKIS postgraduate programs significantly enhance the intellectual capacity of santri, not only in mastering Islamic religious sciences but also in developing related disciplines such as social and natural sciences. These programs encourage the integration of traditional pesantren learning with formal higher education, introducing more advanced and systematic intellectual frameworks within Islamic studies. Furthermore, they provide opportunities for santri to cultivate critical thinking, apply scientific methodologies, and engage in interdisciplinary research. The study concludes that integrating Islamic higher education into pesantren enriches Islamic educational theory and demonstrates the continuing relevance of pesantren in responding to modernization and globalization.

The era of Liberal Democracy (1950-1959) was a period of political dynamics in which Islamic political parties had a significant role at the time, such as the Masjumi Party and the Nahdlatul Ulama Party. However, in addition to political parties, newspaper is another medium used to promote Islam as a way of life. It is a non-partisan newspaper and not the official media of any party as well. The method used is qualitative and historical approach to get a comprehensive and complete picture of Islamic thought at that time. The findings illustrate that the rubric of the "Ruangan Agama" in Indonesia Raya has engaged a discussion of contextual religion by raising real issues that were relevant at that time through the engaged reflection of Muslim intellectuals. The issues raised by the “Ruangan Agama” rubric are corruption, poverty, abuse of power, and others. In short, the "Ruangan Agama" Indonesia Raya’s column is part of a renewed Islamic movement that reflects critically on the fate of Muslims within the nation-state.

The comprehension of democracy and Shura by the Islamic community plays a crucial role in enhancing participation in democratization processes. However, a lack of thorough understanding may lead to disparities and disagreements. The Wasathiyah Islamic Preaching Movement offers a solution by facilitating a deep understanding of both concepts. This article employs a literature review methodology, analyzing seven articles across three databases—PubMed, Scopus, and SpringerLink—to explore the empowerment efforts within the Islamic community regarding democracy and the principles of Shura, as facilitated by the Wasathiyah Islamic Preaching Movement in Indonesia. The findings suggest that the empowerment of the Islamic community in understanding democracy and Shura, through the Wasathiyah Islamic Preaching Movement in Indonesia, is achieved through moderation (tawasuth), balance (tawazun), tolerance (tasamuh), and justice (ta’addul). This article aims to serve as a resource for society to mitigate the potential for disparities and disagreements in applying democratic principles and Shura.
