Journal of Indonesian Islam (JIIS) publishes articles on Indonesian Islam from various perspectives, covering both literary and fieldwork studies. The journal puts emphasis on aspects related to Islamic studies in an Indonesian context, with special reference to culture, politics, law, society, eco­no­mics, history, and doctrines. Journal of Indonesian Islam always places Indonesian Islam in the central focus of academic inquiry, and invites any comprehensive observation of Islamic expressions with various dimensions in the country. The journal, serving as a forum for the study of Indonesian Islam, supports focused studies of particular themes and interdisciplinary studies in relation to the subject. It has become a medium of exchange of ideas and research findings from various traditions of learning that have interacted in the scholarly manner.

Abstract

The same culture and political system do not always give birth to twin political faces. This article finds that there are different policy formulations from the same cultural background and political system. Through a comparative study in two regencies, Sumenep and Pamekasan, in Madura, East Java, this article presents the results of qualitative research which shows that the existence of the same religious culture and the same political system gave birth to different Islamic political policies. There is a tendency to formalize Islam in one area (Pamekasan) and strengthen the substantive side of Islamic teachings in another area (Sumenep). Cultural similarities that are based on values, beliefs, and orientations as the dominant factors that influence political behavior, as well as the similarity of the system that places democratic mechanisms as a determinant factor for the birth of political output, have resulted in different policy formulations.

Abstract

Lately Indonesia is facing a lot of tremendous experience about religious violence. Indonesian Islam which is previously assumed as peaceful religion is suddenly changing to be frightening religion. The destruction in some places such as Bali Bombing, JW Marriot Bombing, and Sampang riot in some places Islam is the trigger of religious violence. This paper discusses the repetition of religious violence in Indonesia especially after New Order era. The writer argues that religious violence in Indonesia is as natural disaster, historical process in human evolution and as close experience that presenting and relating to human history. It may be caused by political condition and the response to economic injustice. In doing so, it is kind of social acceleration toward the process of change and also being a factor of the emergence of new agenda. This is because every disaster, including religious violence, requires an adjustment and a new formulation of the functions that have been damaged.

Abstract

This article discusses majlis taklim as an informal religious learning group in urban area led by Hadrami descents in Indonesia that functions not only in preaching Islam but also in defending their Islamic traditions and practices toward the criticism of Salafi movement in Indonesia. The data presented here is based on in-depth interview with members and leaders of the group and participant observation. This article argues that Islamic traditions in Indonesia are about knowledge, worldview, values, and mode of behavior for Indonesian Muslims, where the Scripture and the spirit of Scripture is the ultimate reference. In this study, we show how Islamic traditions in Indonesia have been carefully maintained, developed, and transmitted through generations. Despite the strong criticism of Salafi group in urban areas, Islamic traditions have been preserved and disseminated through the majlis taklim groups, including by the Indonesian Hadrami individuals. This study is aimed to look at how Hadrami majlis taklim in the urban area maintains, develops and transmits Islamic tradition to the Muslim community and give theological response to the Salafi group’s attack to their practices. The effort of Hadrami majlis taklim has contributed to the maintaining of religious tolerance in contemporary Indonesia.

Abstract

Ideas in psychology are often criticized as being dominated by the spirit and the model of secular and liberal Western thinking. They are frequently deemed to bring bias when applied to analyze the psychological problems of human beings in the context of other cultures, especially in the context of Islamic culture. This paper investigates Indonesian Muslim scientists’ offer of an alternative of grand theory in psychology formulated from a more balanced paradigm called religious anthropocentric psychology. Indonesian Muslim scientists develop this paradigm as an attempt to construct spiritual-religious psychology or Islamic psychology. The paper describes an increasing awareness among those Muslim scientists to develop theories of humanistic psychology with spiritual and religious values. This kind of psychological theory seems to be the basis for so-called Islamic psychology. Furthermore, in addition to its reference toward the anthropocentric paradigm, this kind of psychology also refers to the religious-Islamic values, theo-centric or God-centric.

Abstract

This article examines the channelization of radicalism by fundamentalist-religious organizations among Muslim university students in Indonesia. The data are taken from 700 Muslim students’ respondents in seven Indonesian universities. This study finds that the channelization of radical-religious ideology in Indonesia takes place via new media with three layers of channels: open-public channel, restricted-public channel, and private channel. The first channel, which is relatively public and overt media platforms, is used to communicate and launch their messages, as well as to expand their ideological propaganda. The second channel, which includes some public but relatively closed media platforms, is used by radical-religious organizations in Indonesia to recruit their new members. By the third channel, a more closed and private media platform becomes the final channel to select new cadres. This research finding is expected to be a complementary reference for the de-radicalization processes that are disseminated via new media to young Muslims and university students in Indonesia.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to examine the influence of entrepreneurial intention of the youth Muslim on the realization of maqasid al-shari‘ah in order to overcome poverty and unemployment problems to achieve the sustainable development agenda. This paper also attempts to fit in and enrich the literatures of entrepreneurial intention which integrates with maqasid al-shari‘ah as the objectives of Islamic teachings. An exploratory method design and a deductive approach employed in this study with respondent of 740 Muslim students from five provinces in Indonesia. The findings illustrate that religious and moral motivations have become an inseparable variable for developing entrepreneurial intentions among young people. The analysis output also indicates that subjective norms as the strongest driver to influence Muslim youth entrepreneurial intention. In addition, this study also has policy-level implication both for related government institutions and the universities.

Abstract

In modernist Islamic thoughts, anything that comes from tradition, and that does not have any justiable ground in the Islamic law, must be abandoned since it is considered as heresy. However, a totally opposite situation occurs in Kotagede. Tahlilan, one of those forbidden traditions, has been widely practiced by modernist Muslims. This paper attempts to examine the religious behavior of modernist community in Yogyakarta, especially with regard to motives and functions of their participation in tahlilan. Using Emil Durkheim's sociological approaches, namely social solidarity and functionalism, the research result shows that the tradition of tahlilan remains present amongst the modernist Muslim society in Kotagede due to three factors, these are, because of tolerance values and accommodative attitudes that they hold, the cultural aspects passed on from generation to generation, and the social needs. These three aspects can incorporate in each individual, and sometimes are only partially. It depends on the value system adopted by each individual. Furthermore, maintaining social role and status also becomes another factor that the tradition of tahlilan could be kept alive and preserved until now.

Abstract

This article aims to investigate the ideology of progressive Islam of the Muhammadiyah Young Intellectuals Network (JIMM), a progressive wing within Muhammadiyah. This provides a systematic discussion of the construction of the JIMM’s ideology, its genealogy, and its current development. This is primarily based on the qualitative data purposively collected through participatory observation and interviews, conducted mainly during the 2023 JIMM Congress in Yogyakarta. By employing a sociology of knowledge approach, this article finds that the progressive idea of JIMM is deeply rooted in and has a coherence with Muhammadiyah, particularly in Ahmad Dahlan’s ideology of progressive Islam which combines religious liberalisation and social liberation as embodied in the Al-Ma’un Theology and the Alleviation of Public Misery. We argue that in its recent evolution, JIMM’s ideology of progressive Islam has responded to various contemporary issues, as demonstrated by its activists who have proposed to focus more on the advocacy for human rights, gender justice, religious harmony, universal access to education, environmental stewardship, and caderisation.

Abstract

The issue of Islamic criminal law and its application has become a somewhat heated issue in Indonesia since the very advent of this nation. The political and academic circles are among those who have intensively been involved in debating this problem. The intensity of the debate is due to the fact that the issue is closely related not only to the social construct of the society but also with the very nature of the national law. Speaking of Islamic law in other words, would put a lot of question on how it fits into the national law. This paper deals with this complexity by looking at the Islamic law both as a pure theory and as a formal law that may be applied in certain context. As a pure theory, the Islamic law is dealt with here as vision and idea concerning the attitude of human being in a given society, while as an applied cannon the Islamic law is believed to have the practical dimension that may be applied in a particular situation. The fact that Islamic law has a practical dimension -this paper argues- implies that Shari‘ah is none other than the product of social dynamics. And this would further mean that the the intellectual exercise to draw legal dictum must take into account the human interest (maslahah) on the one hand, and the dialectic between text and context on the other.

Abstract

This article traces the history of Majelis Taklim groups in Indonesia since their emergence and reviews the groups’dynamics in the local Jambi region. Alongside the rise of Majelis Taklim, it details the advancement of women’s roles in the public sphere and their contributions to a functioning democracy. I argue that the role of Majelis Taklim groups has changed in recent decades, with the groups providing a vehicle for Muslim women’s interests and voices to be heard. In particular, women in Majelis Taklim groups are showing much more awareness of political issues compared to the past. Changes have occurred in wider Indonesian society, most significantly their participation in education since the 1960s. This is reflected in the gradual improvement in the Gender Equality Index and Human Development Index of Jambi in 2019 when compared to nearly a decade earlier in 2010, however, gender inequality issues, mainly regarding labor and political participation, are still strong.
