Abstract

This study aims to investigate the equivalence in translation of movie subtitle at the linguistic level and its ideology. The data were taken from the movie script entitled “Guardians of the Galaxy” in English and its Indonesian subtitles. This study was conducted based on qualitative research methods with the descriptive analysis. The results of the analysis showed that there were found 51 data for equivalence at word level, 37 data for equivalence at above word level, 224 data for grammatical equivalence, 101 data for textual level, 29 data for pragmatic level equivalence In addition, there were found 30 data for foreignization ideology and 15 data for domestication ideology. In the end, it turns out that much of the information is equivalent on a grammatical level, and most of the translations made use of foreignization ideology to preserve the original language's culture. Although grammatical equivalency is frequently used in foreignization ideology, it is not always employed. Since grammar plays such a pivotal role in translation, linguistic equivalent at all levels—from the word to the text to the pragmatic— must be based on grammatical equivalence.

Abstract

The research is conducted to find the answer of the problem how the use of guiding questions technique can improve students’ writing recount text achievement in the first grade of science of Al Misri Islamic Senior High School Curahmalang, Rambipuji. The research design is classroom action research. This research is covered four stages of activities; they are planning of the action, implementing of the action, observing, and reflecting of the action. Based on the result of writing test in cycle one showed that the percentage of the students who got score 7,65 was 60%. And in cycle two, it improved to be 37%. In addition, the average result of the students’ active participation was 65% in cycle one. In cycle two, the average result of the students’ active participation indicated improvement that was 75%. It can be concluded that the action in cycle two was successful. Finally, it can be the use of guiding questions technique could improve the first grade of science students’ writing recount text achievement and could improve the first grade of science students’ active participation in teaching learning process at Al Misri Islamic Senior High School Curahmalang, Rambipuji.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze cognitive strategies employed by EFL students in their process-based writing. It used descriptive qualitative method that carried out undergraduate students of TBI at STIT Miftahul Midad Lumajang as the subjects of the study. In order to collect the data, observation and semi-structured interview were conducted. The findings revealed that the students use several writing cognitive strategies. In planning stage, they use brainstorming, outlining, and setting goal in order to help them generate and organize their ideas. In composing stage, they use drafting process, focusing on the audience and using self-regulation strategies to help them write effectively and efficiently. Further, in reviewing stage, they use several cognitive strategies to help them improve the quality of their text by proofreading, revising and seeking feedback. In addition, cognitive strategies have been proposed as an effective tools in order to enhance EFL students’ writing performance.

Abstract

This study aims to explore cultural awareness of bilingual learners in the unique context of an Islamic boarding school. It focuses on how they manage their cultural identities, both in the Islamic framework and in the broader multicultural context. This study uses qualitative research method, including semi-structured interview, observation, and document analysis in order to explore the cultural experiences, challenges, and strategies employed by these learners. The findings reveal the nuanced ways in which cultural awareness shapes the language acquisition process for bilingual learners. Moreover, it highlights the significance of creating culturally sensitive pedagogical approaches that accommodate the needs of learners in Islamic boarding schools. This research contributes to the broader discourse on bilingual education, cultural awareness, and the role of religious institutions in shaping the learners’ cultural identity. In addition, it offers valuable insights for teachers or educational stakeholders seeking to foster inclusive and culturally relevant educational environments in diverse settings.

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of implementing the Impromptu Method to enhance speaking skills among students enrolled in the MBKM (Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka) programs at STIT Miftahul Midad Lumajang. With the increasing importance of effective communication in the globalized world, it has become imperative for higher education institutions to equip their students with proficient speaking abilities. The Impromptu Method is chosen for its emphasis on spontaneity and quick thinking, which are valuable skills in various professional and academic contexts. The research methodology involves a pre-test and post-test design, where participants' speaking skills are assessed before and after the implementation of the Impromptu Method. Additionally, qualitative data in the form of student feedback and observations are collected to gain insights into their experiences with the method. The study aims to analyze the impact of the Impromptu Method on students' confidence, fluency, and articulation in spoken communication. Preliminary findings suggest that the Impromptu Method holds promise as an effective pedagogical approach to enhance speaking skills. Students report increased self-assurance in impromptu speaking situations, improved fluency, and the ability to articulate their thoughts more coherently. The study provides valuable insights into the potential benefits of incorporating this method into the MBKM programs, ultimately contributing to the development of well-rounded, confident, and proficient speakers among students at STIT Miftahul Midad Lumajang.
