Abstract

Learning motivation is a crucial factor influencing the effectiveness of the learning process in higher education. One instructional innovation implemented in universities is the block system of lectures, in which learning activities are organized intensively for one course within a specific period before moving to another course. This study aims to examine the effect of the block lecture system on students’ learning motivation at the Faculty of Education, Universitas Negeri Medan. This research employed a quantitative approach using a field survey method. The participants consisted of 29 students, all of whom were selected as the research sample using a saturated sampling technique. Data were collected through a Likert-scale questionnaire that had been tested for validity and reliability. The data were analyzed using normality tests, correlation analysis, and simple linear regression. The results showed that the data were normally distributed and that there was a positive and significant relationship between the block lecture system and students’ learning motivation. Furthermore, the regression analysis indicated that the block lecture system had a significant effect on learning motivation, as evidenced by a significance value below 0.05. These findings suggest that the block lecture system can enhance students’ focus, independence, and engagement in learning when implemented in a well-planned and balanced manner. This study is expected to provide practical implications for higher education institutions in evaluating and developing effective learning systems that support the improvement of students’ learning motivation.

Abstract

Student participation in organizations is influenced by various factors, yet the specific role of demographic characteristics as predictors remains underexplored empirically at the Faculty of Education, Universitas Negeri Medan. This study aims to examine the effect of these demographic characteristics—specifically age, department, and year of entry (stambuk)—on students’ interest in participating in student organizations. This study employed a quantitative explanatory approach. The sample consisted of 32 students selected using a simple random sampling technique. Data were collected through an online questionnaire distributed via Google Forms and analyzed using multiple linear regression. The results indicate that age, department, and year of entry do not have a significant effect on students’ interest in participating in organizations, either simultaneously or partially. The coefficient of determination shows that demographic characteristics explain only 23.5% of the variance in organizational interest, while the remaining variance is likely influenced by other factors outside the regression model. Therefore, it can be concluded that demographic characteristics are not robust predictors of students' interest in organizations in this specific context.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the profile of multiple intelligences and character of students at the Faculty of Education, Universitas Negeri Medan, along with their demographic characteristics based on department, academic year, GPA, gender, and age. The research employed a quantitative approach using a descriptive research design. The subjects consisted of 25 students from the PGSD, PGPAUD, Guidance and Counseling, and Community Education programs. Data were collected through questionnaires distributed via Google Forms, including respondent identity data, the Multiple Intelligences Score (MIS) instrument, and a character instrument covering honesty, cooperation, discipline, care, independence, perseverance, resilience, initiative, responsibility, and communication ethics. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics with the Jamovi application, including mean values, percentages, and frequency distributions. The results indicate that kinesthetic, interpersonal, intrapersonal, existential, musical, and naturalistic intelligences were relatively more developed among students, while logical-mathematical, verbal-linguistic, and visual-spatial intelligences were less dominant. Regarding character aspects, most students were categorized at a moderate level, with communication ethics emerging as the most prominent character trait. These findings highlight the importance of implementing holistic learning approaches that integrate multiple intelligences and character development in higher education.

Abstract

Learning outcomes are an important indicator of the success of learning in higher education and are influenced by various internal factors, one of which is learning style. This preliminary study aims to identify students’ learning style tendencies and analyze the effect of learning styles on the perceived learning outcomes of students at the Faculty of Education, Universitas Negeri Medan. This research employed a quantitative approach with a descriptive research design. As a pilot study, the subjects consisted of 29 students from several study programs within the Faculty. Data were collected using a closed-ended Likert scale questionnaire to measure visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning styles, as well as self-reported learning outcomes. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive statistics and regression analysis. The results showed a dominant tendency toward visual learning styles. The model test indicated a positive relationship with moderate strength (R = 0.576), contributing 33.2% to learning outcomes. Partially, only the visual learning style had a significant effect on students’ learning outcomes (p < 0.05). This study concludes that visual learning styles play an important role in improving students’ outcomes. Therefore, lecturers are encouraged to develop adaptive visual-based learning strategies.

Abstract

In early childhood, good sleep quality plays a crucial role in brain development and readiness for learning. This study aims to examine the relationship between sleep quality and short-term memory in 5-6 year old children at Pembina Garoga Kindergarten in North Tapanuli, Indonesia. The study design was quantitative and correlational. The sample consisted of 24 children selected via random sampling from a population of 30 children. Sleep quality was measured using the parent-completed adapted Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), which covers seven dimensions: latency, duration, continuity, subjective quality, refreshment upon waking, efficiency, and behavioral disturbances. Short-term memory was measured through a performance test consisting of six tasks: repeating numbers, repeating words, following three-step instructions, recalling visual objects (picture cards), repeating sentences, and retelling a story. Data analysis utilized descriptive statistics and Pearson’s correlation using Jamovi. Results indicated that 79.2% of children had very good sleep quality and 20.8% had good sleep quality, while 62.5% had good short-term memory, 33.3% had adequate short-term memory, and 4.2% had very good short-term memory. The Pearson correlation test revealed a significant positive relationship between sleep quality and short-term memory (r=0.470, p=0.020), with moderate strength. These findings confirm that the better a child’s sleep quality, the higher their short-term memory capacity. The study concludes that sufficient and high-quality sleep enhances a child’s ability to temporarily store and retrieve information, which is essential for classroom learning. Parents and teachers should prioritize healthy sleep habits as part of a strategy for early childhood cognitive development.
