Abstract

Islamic civilization in the Indonesian archipelago during the pre-independence period significantly contributed to the formation of the social, political, cultural, and educational structures of Indonesian society. The process of Islamization, which took place through trade, marriage, the preaching of Islamic scholars, and the development of Islamic kingdoms, gave birth to centers of civilization such as Aceh, Demak, Banten, and Ternate. This research uses a literature study method by examining scientific articles indexed by Google Scholar on the history of Islam and Islamic education in the Indonesian archipelago. The results show that the development of Islamic education before independence was realized through traditional institutions such as Islamic boarding schools (pesantren), surau (surau), dayah (dayah), and langgar (prayer houses), which functioned as centers for the transmission of Islamic knowledge, moral development, and the development of clerics and community leaders. Furthermore, Islamic educational institutions served as a means of cultural resistance against colonialism and a medium for the formation of the community's identity. In the early 20th century, Islamic education underwent renewal through the madrasah system, which began to integrate religious and general knowledge. Thus, Islamic civilization in the pre-independence Indonesian archipelago not only left a religious and cultural legacy but also laid an important foundation for the development of national education in Indonesia

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the dynamics of Islamic civilization in the Indonesian Archipelago (Nusantara) during the colonial era and how Islamic education evolved as a response to colonialism. Using a qualitative historical method, the study finds that while colonialism disrupted Islamic political structures, it simultaneously triggered intellectual resistance. Islamic education transformed from traditional 'pesantren' into modern 'madrasahs' and schools, which served as strongholds for cultural identity and independence movements. The study concludes that the resilience of Islamic civilization in Nusantara was rooted in its educational adaptability and the pivotal role of ulama and Islamic organizations.

Abstract

Pre-Islamic religion and culture in the Archipelago had diverse characteristics and had been deeply rooted before the arrival of Islam. The people of the Archipelago in the pre-Islamic period adhered to animism and dynamism belief systems, later overlaid by Hindu-Buddhist influences that came afterward. This article aims to describe the characteristics of pre-Islamic religion and culture in the Archipelago, including belief systems, ritual practices, social structure, politics, education, literature, and architecture. Using a library research method with a historical approach, this study finds that pre-Islamic religion in the Archipelago has distinctive features such as belief in ancestral spirits, worship practices at sacred sites, a caste system (Hindu influence), and terraced shrines (punden berundak) as the forerunner of temple architecture. These cultural characteristics later became an important foundation for the acculturation process when Islam entered the Archipelago

Abstract

The Wali Songo era marked a pivotal phase in the Islamization and civilization-building of Nusantara, blending spiritual propagation with strategic political engagement amid the declining Majapahit kingdom. This research examines core issues such as the cultural adaptation of Islam through local arts, architecture (e.g., Demak Mosque), and syncretic practices, alongside the political characteristics including non-violent power transitions, alliances with local rulers, and establishment of the Demak Sultanate as Islam's first political stronghold. The objective is to analyze how the Nine Saints fostered Islamic civilization while navigating political dynamics like indirect influence via royal courts and moral authority rather than conquest. Employing a historical-philosophical approach with qualitative analysis of primary sources (chronicles like Babad Tanah Jawi) and secondary literature, the study reveals key findings: the Wali Songo's tolerant, adaptive politics—characterized by cultural diplomacy, heir cultivation (e.g., Sunan Gunung Jati's statecraft), and Ahlus Sunnah wal Jamaah doctrine—ensured Islam's enduring dominance, transforming Nusantara into a hub of Islamic pluralism by the 16th century.

Abstract

This study examines the negotiation process between the state and Islamic educational institutions—particularly madrasah and pesantren—during the Old Order period (1945–1965). Employing a historical approach through library research, this study analyzes how government policies toward Islamic education were formulated and how madrasah and pesantren responded through institutional adaptation. The concept of "educational negotiation" is used as an analytical tool to examine the reciprocal relationship between the state's interest in building a national education system and the Muslim community's aspiration to preserve religious education. The findings reveal that the relationship between the state and Islamic educational institutions was not subordinative but negotiative, resulting in the formal recognition of madrasah and the modernization of pesantren as the foundation of Islamic education in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the development of Islamic civilization in the Nusantara during the Walisongo era and its role in shaping the Islamic education system. The novelty of this research lies in the integration of three variables (Islamic civilization, education system, and long-term impact) into a holistic analytical framework, which has not been systematically conducted by previous studies. The method used is qualitative with a descriptive approach through library research, analyzing 20 literatures consisting of 12 accredited journal articles, 6 scientific books, and 2 historical documents. The results show that:  Islamic civilization in the Walisongo era developed through cultural acculturation by utilizing arts (wayang, gamelan, tembang) and local traditions as effective da'wah media. Walisongo played an important role in developing pesantren, mosques, and surau as centers for religious learning and character building. The education system developed was flexible, contextual, gradual, and aligned with local wisdom. The conclusion is that Islamic civilization in the Walisongo era not only influenced religious aspects but also became a major foundation for Islamic education in Indonesia today. The practical implication is that the Walisongo-style local culture-based education model can serve as a reference for developing moderate Islamic education in the contemporary era.

Abstract

Oral communication skills in English are an essential competence for non-English department students to face global challenges. However, conventional teaching methods often fail to address foreign language anxiety and the lack of active student engagement. This study examines the implementation of the Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) approach combined with the utilization of digital projects as an alternative strategy in higher education English learning. Employing a literature review method, this article analyzes various relevant scientific literatures to evaluate the effectiveness of the model. The findings of the review indicate that TBLT is capable of providing an authentic communication space through the completion of meaningful tasks, while the integration of digital projects—such as podcasts, collaborative videos, and technology-based media—proves effective in motivating students, reducing anxiety levels, and improving speaking fluency and accuracy. Based on these results, educators are advised to adopt the integration of TBLT and digital media to create an interactive, student-centered learning ecosystem that is relevant to the demands of the modern workforce.
