Abstract

Ada dua jenis teks, yaitu teks lisan dan teks tertulis. Baik teks lisan maupun teks tertulis masing-masing memiliki makna yang terkandung di dalamnya. Dalam penelitian ini, penulis memilih salah satu teks tertulis, yaitu Statement of Purpose yang merupakan bagian dari teks Study Proposal. Penulis tertarik meneliti jenis teks ini karena teks Statement of Purpose diasumsikan memiliki makna ideasional yang dapat dikaji lebih lanjut. Ruang lingkup dalam penelitian ini adalah analisis transitivity system pada teks Statement of Purpose sebagai bagian dari Study Proposal yang diambil dari website UC Berkeley. Untuk itu, penulis memakai Systemic Functional Grammar yang diperkenalkan oleh Halliday (2004) sebagai alat analisis dengan didukung oleh teori-teori Eggins(1994).            Penelitian ini bertujuan menjelaskan makna ideasional yang ingin diungkapkan oleh penulis teks Statement of Purpose melalui transitivity system. Data yang digunakan adalah seluruh klausa yang terdapat dalam teks Statement of Purpose. Penelitian ini dikategorikan sebagai penelitian deskriptif kualitatif. Dalam pengumpulan data, penulis menggunakan documentary method dan Simak Bebas Libat Cakap.             Hasil yang diperoleh dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa dalam teks Statement of Purpose, makna ideasional yang ingin disampaikan oleh penulis terbagi menjadi tiga bagian. Bagian yang pertama yaitu pengenalan. Pada bagian pengenalan, penulis Statement of Purpose memberikan gambaran mengenai identitas, latar belakang dan ketertarikannya terhadap salah satu bidang. Bagian kedua yaitu isi dimana penulis Statement of Purpose menjelaskan apa saja yang telah ia lakukan di masa lampau. Bagian yang terakhir yaitu penutup. Pada bagian ini, penulis menjelaskan tentang rencana masa depan, alasan kenapa dia memilih UC Berkeley dan pendapatnya mengenai universitas tersebut.  Kata kunci : Statement of Purpose, transitivity system, ideational meaning

Abstract

This thesis will discuss patriotism acts reflected by the characters of the movie ARGO. The movie tells about Tony Mendez a CIA agent who tries to save the staff of U.S. Embassy hostage in Iran by making a fake movie entitled ARGO. The objectives of this thesis are to describe the intrinsic aspect which covers the narrative elements and cinematic elements on the movie ARGO and explain the extrinsic aspect which covers the patriotism acts performed by the characters of the movie, especially Tony Mendez, John Chamber and Leister Siegel based on Patriotism theory by Igor Primoratz. The writer uses library research in collecting the data and uses sociology of literature approach. The result of this thesis find John Chamber, Leister Siegel and especially Tony Mendez showed modern patriotism by saving the six staff of U.S. Embassy in Iran from Iran militants. Meanwhile Iran militants represent group of people who have extreme patriotism.

Abstract

The Alchemist is one of Paulo Coelho’s works. This novel has a different story from other fiction novels. The story is very inspiring about a shepherd who tries to realize the dream he believe in Egypt. The Alchemist has also many wise and meaningful words.Book review that will be presented by the writer in this time is different from the other book reviews.  The writer will criticize the translation process that has been done by the translator,Tanti Lemana, in the Indonesian version of The Alchemist. The criticism discuss about the strengths and weaknesses of the translation process, such as; the translation method, the translation errors, the translator awareness of cultural context, and the unfamiliar terms. However, although this book review contains about the writer criticism, but the purpose is not to judge that the translation process done by the translator is good or even bad. The main purpose of this book is simply to know the influence of the translation process toward the Indonesian version of The Alchemist.

Abstract

This review analyzes the strengths and weaknesses of N.H. Kleinbaum’s Dead Poets Society. Dead Poets Society is a novel that tells a story about a journey of an English literature teacher who provides non-conventional teaching methods in literature. This review explores the strengths and the weaknesses of N.H. Kleinbaum’s Dead Poets Society by reviewing its elements. They are theme, plot, and characters. This novel has strengths that make it as a good reading. The strengths of the novel are theme and plot. The weakness of the novel is the character aspect. The author tells too much about the additional figures. The goal of this study is to understand the novel clearly. Therefore, the reader can know the opinion of the author about the content of the novel.

Abstract

Final project ini merupakan ulasan dari novel Perfume: The Story of a Murderer yang telah diterjemahkan kedalam berbagai bahasa termasuk bahasa Indonesia. Novel ini ditulis oleh seorang penulis Jerman bernama Patrick Suskind. Perfume: The Story of a Murderer bergenre thriller story. Penulis memberikan ringkasan singkat dari novel tersebut, dengan pemeran utama Jean Baptise Grenouille, seseorang yang tidak memiliki aroma tubuh tetapi diberikan anugerah yaitu indra penciuman yang sangat tajam. Cerita yang berisi tentang penyalahgunaan dari keahlian yang dimiliki manusia ini merupakan suatu yang baru bagi penggemar novel fiksi. Final project ini menyajikan pandangan-pandangan penulis mengenai kekuatan dan kelemahan dari novel tersebut sehingga pembaca dapat menentukan apakahnovel tersebut layak dibaca atau tidak.

Abstract

In this thesis, the writer analyzes a novel by Rainbow Rowell entitled Landline. The novel tells about a woman who is in confusion to choose between her family and her job. The purposes of the thesis are to analyze and to explain the guilt that is faced by the main character, Georgie McCool, and her attempt to resolve the guilt. Several theories such as the five stages of grief proposed by Elizabeth Kübler-Ross and the theory of guilt by Guy Winch are used in order to analyze the issue. Other theories regarding workaholism and stereotypes of woman from various experts are also used. In order to analyze the data, the writer uses internet and library research. After conducting the analysis, the result shows that the main character of the novel has more masculine than feminine traits. She also suffers from disloyalty guilt, and it forces her to undergo the five stages of grief, such as denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance.

Abstract

Tugas akhir ini membahas tentang novel karya Mitch Albom yang berjudul The Time Keeper. The Time Keeper  adalah sebuah novel yang bercerita tentang Dor, manusia pertama yang menghitung waktu di bumi. Ia dihukum di gua karena mencoba mengukur anugrah terbesar dari Tuhan, yaitu Waktu. Lalu kembali ke dunia, dengan membawa jam pasir ajaib dan sebuah misi yaitu menebus kesalahannya dengan mengajarkan makna Waktu pada dua manusia bumi. Dalam tugas akhir ini penulis memberikan ulasan mengenai kelebihan dan kelemahan novel tersebut. Kelebihan novel tersebut terletak pada tema dan gaya penulisan, sedangkan karakter merupakan kelemahan dari novel ini. Tujuannya agar pembaca memahami novel tersebut serta dapat mengetahui pendapat dari sisi penulis tentang isi novel. Penulis berharap semoga ulasan mengenai novel ini dapat bermanfaat bagi pembaca.

Abstract

This final project is to analyze novel, Seduction in Death by J.D Robb. The purpose of this final project is to know sexual disorder owned by the character in the novel Seduction in Death. The sexual disorder is sadism and masochism. In analysis this novel, the writer uses a literary research method and Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalysis theory. The Result shows that there are sexual needs unfulfilled by Kevin Morano that ultimately he commits sadism and masochism.

Abstract

Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s “The Cry of the Children” is one of many poems which portray the condition of child labors in Victorian Era. The objectives of this thesis are to show that child labor exploitation really happens through intrinsic elements, to describe the conditions of the child labors, and to explain several effects of child labor exploitation in Victorian Era. The writer uses library research in collecting the data. To analyze the extrinsic elements of the poem, the writer uses sociological criticism. The result of this thesis is that the exploitation gives several effects to the child labors. It is represented by the child labors’ wish for death, the loss of happiness as children, and the skepticism towards God. It can be concluded that children should have freedom so they can feel love and happiness.
