Abstract

This thesis will discuss about Heathcliff’s personality development in the novel Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte.  The purpose of this thesis is to analyze how and why the character’s personality develops. The writer uses characters, setting, and conflicts for intrinsic theory and Alfred Adler’s Individual Psychology for extrinsic theory. For the methodology, the writer uses library research methodology and psychological approach. The result shows that social interest, inferiority complex, goal orientation, and superiority complex give many infuences in developing Heathcliff’s personality so that he can take over Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange. In the conclusion, Heathcliff comes as the most dominant and superior character by his personality development.

Abstract

Dalam dialog televisi, setiap ujaran yang diucapkan oleh pembawa acara dan narasumber memiliki fungsi dan tujuan tertentu. Berdasarkan alasan itu, penulis tertarik untuk menganalisis bagaimana bentuk tindak ilokusi yang diucapkan oleh pembawa acara dan narasumber agar dapat menyampaikan pesan dalam dialog secara tepat. Penulis memilih dialog Apa Kabar Amerika, Kampanye Retail Eat, Pray, Love 22 Agustus 2010, produksi TV One untuk di analisis. Penulis berfokus kepada analisis exchange, move, klasifikasi serta jenis tindak ilokusi, dan fungsi pada setiap ujaran. Penulis menggunakan teori tindak ilokusi (illocutionary act) dari George Yule serta teori analisis wacana (discourse analysis) dari Michael McCharty untuk menganalisis permasalahan tersebut. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian yang bersifat deskriptif dengan pendekatan kualitatif. Data penelitian diambil dengan teknik total sampling yang terdiri dari 93 ujaran dalam dialog Apa Kabar Amerika. Penulis menggunakan teori Sudaryanto yaitu metode Simak Bebas Libat Cakap untuk pengambilan data. Dalam menganalisis data, penulis menggunakan metode padan dan metode pragmatis. Selain itu, penulis juga mengaplikasikan konsep interpretasi meaning dari Griffiths. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa dalam dialog telvisi Apa Kabar Amerika ditemukan tindak ilokusi. Dari 93 ujaran, penulis dapat menganalisis 20 exchanges, 20 moves and 133 acts. Terdapat keterhubungan antara exchange satu dengan yang lainnya. Ujaran yang diucapkan oleh kedua pembawa acara dan narasumber merepresentasikan tindak ilokusi representatives, directives, commissives, dan expressives. Tindak ilokusi tersebut disampaikan secara direct dan indirect. Penulis tidak menemukan adanya penggunaan tindak ilokusi declarations, karena tidak ada ucapan yang berfungsi untuk mengubah status seseorang. Dialog tersebut disampaikan dengan gaya bicara yang santai tetapi pesan dari dialog tetap dapat dipahami oleh penonton.

Abstract

This project aims to analyze the character Malcolm River in Identity movie. The result of analyzing the figures Malcolm Riversis that he suffered multiple personality syndrome or now known as Dissociative Identity Disorder. Malcolm was abused, neglected, and finally abandoned by his mother was a prostitute whenhe was a child.He felt extremely insecure so he made a new personality or a new identity to protect his original identity. However, this new identity was in fact a killer. As time goes on he made new identities to fight against the identity of the killer and also protect him from any threat.

Abstract

Literature is an artwork from the expression of human’s feeling and mind. One example for that artwork is novel. There are many novels that human has produced. With different theme, style and storyline, novel becomes a material reading in human world, especially for entertainment. In Theory of Literature, Wellek and Warren state, “Literature cannot be ‘studied’ at all. We can only read, enjoy and appreciate it. Overall, we can only accumulate all kinds of information about literature” (1948:15). With that many themes of the novels that human has made, one of the themes that are interesting is horror. Horror usually has connection with mysterious things. With those mysteries, people will get the atmosphere, the feeling and the thought of the story. Sometimes, they will get the terror of the horror itself and make them shudder. They will try to solve the case while reading it as well. Even though, some unexpected accidents that happen will break the assumptions they have made as they read the novel.

Infantry The Backbone of The Army karya tulis Priyono berisi pandangannya mengenai pasukan infantri di Indonesia. Penulis mengulas buku ini untuk mengenalkan pentingnya pasukan infantry dalam dunia militer. Penulis mengulas buku ini untuk menunjukan kelebihan dan kekurangan dari karya Priyono. Ulasan ini juga menjelaskan perkembangan dunia militer Indonesia dan organisasi militer yang menjadi tulang punggung di Indonesia. Penulis berharap pembaca dapat memperoleh sudut pandang baru tentang dunia militer Indonesia. Penulis berharap pembaca dapat bertambah pengetahuannya tentang dunia militer di Indonesia serta perkembangannya dari zaman kemerdekaan hingga saat ini.

Abstract

in today’s civilization, cultural diplomacy as a soft approach in constructing beneficial relationship has remarkably been developed within the international circumstances. In case of American goverment, the United States also focuses on developing educational services in form of library center as the direct product of its cultural diplomacy which one of them is the construction of American Corner. Aligned with the American Corner UIN Walisongo Semarang, to measure response of its users towards American Corner as the product of cultural diplomacy is interesting, particularly from the students point of view whose educational backround has no relation with American Studies at all. This study applies a descriptive approach and quantitative method by distributing questionnaire towards 30 respondents. Theories used in this study are ‘American Cultural Diplomacy Product’ by Richard. T. Arndt and ‘Leader Characteristics and Foreign Policy Performance’ by Eugene R. Wittkopf. The data is presented in the form of tables and descriptive report. This study found that there is an ambiguity on the preference of Indonesian Moslem University Students towards the American cultural diplomacy product. Although they admit and realize with the political objectives of American Corner, they are still open to this political product since it brings beneficial features for their personal interests.

Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is to analyze Edgar Allan Poe’s Annabel Lee. The writer intends to describe the mental state which the narrator endures upon Annabel Lee’s death. The writer discusses figurative language, namely symbol and irony, to describe the mental state in the poem. The writer adopts Sigmund Freud’s theory of levels of mental life and id ego superego, and John lee’s theory of obesessive love to describe the mental state. The methods of her intrinsic and the extrinsic discussion are applied through book observation, library research, and the internet browsing. The result shows that in a love relationship there are two kinds of moments, happy and sad one. This final academic paper shows that the death of the beloved one greatly affects the narrator’s life; he loses his self control and becomes deppressed.

Buku ini  menceritakan  kisah  pertemanan antara Samihi Ismail dan WayanManik yang sama-sama berjuang melawan  ketakutan yang di bawa dari masa lalunya.Tujuan review buku ini untuk mengidentifikasi kelebihan dan kekurangan melalui elementtheme, character, plot dan setting. Abstract

Penelitian ini membahas tentang kesalahan gramatikal pada esai yang ditulis oleh mahasiswa tingkat senior jurusan Bahasa Inggris angkatan 2011/2012 di Universitas Diponegoro pada mata kuliah Academic Writing. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui kesalahan-kesalahan gramatikal dalam hal penggunaan tenses, aspects, dan word classes. Penelitian ini juga membahas tentang faktor-faktor yang menyebabkan kesalahan gramatikal yang ditemukan pada esai-esai tersebut. Pendekatan yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah kualitatif deskriptif, sedangkan dalam pengambilan sample digunakan total sampling technique. Untuk metode pengumpulan data digunakan metode dokumentasi dan metode non participant observation, sedangkan dalam menganalisis data digunakan metode distributional. Dari data yang telah dianalisis ditemukan 238 gramatikal eror dalam 122 kalimat yang eror dari keseluruhan 223 kalimat pada 15 essay. Eror yang paling dominan ditemukan adalah dalam penggunaan kata kerja (verb), sedangkan eror yang paling sedikit ditemukan adalah dalam penggunaan kata keterangan (adverb). Sedangkan dalam 122 kalimat yang eror, persentase tertinggi ditemukan pada setiap kalimat eror yang didalamnya terdapat satu kesalahan gramatikal (one-error-sentence), sedangkan kalimat eror yang mendapatkan presentase terendah adalah kalimat yang didalamnya memiliki lima kesalahan gramatikal (five-error-sentence). Berdasarkan sejumlah kesalahan gramatikal yang ditemukan, diperoleh faktor-faktor yang menyebabkan terjadinya kesalahan-kesalahan tersebut. Faktor yang paling mendominasi penyebab terjadinya kesalahan adalah pengaruh bahasa pertama (first language interference) yang menyebabkan 163 kesalahan gramatikal, sementara itu faktor penyebab kesalahan gramatikal yang paling sedikit adalah disebabkan oleh kecerobohan (carelessness) yang menyebabkan 29 kesalahan gramatikal, sedangkan 46 kesalahan gramatikal lainnya disebabkan oleh faktor terjemahan (translation).

Discrimination is often found in society, it is caused by the human being inclination to discriminate the others. Discrimination is treating people differently, in which this treatment is made based on the characteristic which has been represented by the people like race, nation, gender, and more. Women sometimes become an object of discrimination because many people underestimate women, especially women who work in particular job.
