Optimization of manganese bioleaching activity and molecular characterization of indigenous heterotrophic bacteria isolated from the sulfuric area. Biodiversitas 20: 1904-1909.  The present research evaluated the manganese bioleaching potency of a heterotrophic bacteria KB3B1. This bacterial strain has been isolated from sulfuric area located at Ungaran, Middle of Java, Indonesia using modified 9K medium by adding of several organic nutrients. The manganese bioleaching activities of the strain was analysed by applying of varying glycine concentrations (0, 5, 10, 15 mg mL-1) with pyrolusite pulp densities of 0.02 g cm-3 on a rotary shaker at 180 rpm for 18 days incubation. Several parameters, including the growth of bacteria, pH values, the concentration of soluble manganese and cyanide, were investigated at the interval of 3 days. Molecular characteristics of the strain were further analyzed based on 16S rDNA gene sequences. After 15 days, the maximum yield of manganese 16.6% was achieved under the addition of 10 mg mL-1 glycine. This maximum extract obtained was followed by the maximum bacterial growth, pH, and cyanide product of the strain. Phylogenetic analysis showed that the strain was closely related with Bacillus niacini EP89. Besides, the average frequencies of guanine and cytosine (G+C) of the strain was in same range as that of the reference bacteria in the GenBank and Bergey's Manual Systematics of Bacteria.

Biodiversitas 20: 1973-1982. Agricultural production on tin tailings land must consider the safety of products from Pb metal contaminants. The presence of Pb metal can be overcome by using plants as phytoremediation. This study aimed to obtain information on the ability of phytoremediation of Pb by various types of grass and its interaction with the types of ameliorants in tin tailings media. Three species of grass were used, namely Pennisetum purpureum, Saccharum spontaneum, and Hymenachne acutigluma, and two types of ameliorant, namely lime and compost. The study was designed using a factorial treatment design laid out in a completely randomized design with two treatment factors, namely the type of grass and the type of ameliorant. Observations were done on growth, shoot Pb content and root Pb content. The ability of phytoremediation was assessed by using the approach of Bioconcentration factor (BCF) and Translocation Factor (TF) values. The highest phytoremediation ability was found in treatment of H. acutigluma grass treated with lime ameliorant, followed by S. spontaneum treated with lime ameliorous and S. spontaneum treated with compost ameliorant. Based on BCF values, P. purpureum and H. acutigluma were categorized as accumulators, and S. spontaneum was classified as an excluder. Based on TF values, the three types of grass used were classified as phytostabilisation. The high ability of phytoremediation in H. acutigluma was caused by its high BCF values, ??while the high ability of phytoremediation on S. spontaneum was caused by its low translocation factor value and high Pb absorption efficiency.

Abstract. Mahyuni R, Chikmawati T, Ariyanti NS. 2019. Short Communication: Two new species and new record of  Psydrax Gaertn. (Rubiaceae: Vanguerieae) in Borneo. Biodiversitas 20: 2011-2015. Psydrax sabahensis Mahyuni and P. wongii Mahyuni are two new species endemic to Borneo proposed in this present study with descriptions, illustrations and map of distribution provided. Psydrax sabahensis has blades ovate to elliptic, with angle 60º to the midrib, tertiary venation conspicuous on both side, petiole length 10-13 mm long, inflorescence sub-umbellate and pedicels 23-27 mm long. Psydrax wongii has blade elliptic, with angle 45º to midrib, apex acuminate to caudate, secondary veins 3-4 pairs, tertiary venation inconspicuous on upper side and slightly wrinkled on lower surface. The presence of P. maingayi (Hook.f.) Bridson in Borneo, previously thought to be a Malay Peninsula endemic species, is also confirmed as a new record.

Abstract. Supiandi MI, Leliavia, Syafruddin D, Utami YE, Sekunda R. 2019. Plant fruits used as food by the Dayak community of Tamambaloh in Labian Ira’ang Village, Kapuas Hulu District, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 20: 1827-1832. The Dayak Tamambaloh community has a long tradition of using plants as source of food. However, this knowledge of using the plants as food has not been scientifically documented. The objectives of this study were to identify the species of plants, especially fruit yielding plants, that which were used as food, and to document the methods of their processing practiced by Dayak Tamambaloh community. This study was conducted through the literature survey, interviews and field surveys in Labian Ira’ang Village, Kapuas Hulu District, Indonesia. The results of this study showed that Dayak Tamambaloh community in Labian Ira’ang Village use fruits of as many as 60 species of plants for edible purposes. They belonged to 29 plant families. The families with the highest percentage of fruit yielding plants were Moraceae (10%) and Cucurbitaceae (10%). The food plants were mainly obtained from forests (58.33%), gardens (16.67%), house yards (15%), river banks (5%) and hills (5%).

Biodiversitas 20: 1833-1838. Bioremediation of crude oil contaminated soil eventually depends on the activities of microorganisms to degrade contaminants. Bioaugmentation, through the addition of microbial culture to contaminated soil, can be used to enhance degradation rates. This research aimed to determine the effect of yeast formulations isolated from the oil-contaminated soil and mangrove rhizosphere to degrade crude oil and evaluate the most effective yeast formulation and incubation timefor crude oil degradation. This research was conducted by subculturing yeast in the slant agar medium, screening hydrocarbonoclastic yeast in crude oil- Bushnell Hass Mineral Salt (BHMS) medium, biodegradation test, measuring the total cell number with Total Plate Count (TPC), Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon (TPH) test with the gravimetric method, and measuring soil moisture content. The design of the research was Completely Randomized Factorial Design with 3 replications. Data were analyzed quantitatively by using statistical tests for TPC and TPH, while a descriptive qualitative test analyzed soil moisture. The result showed that yeast formulation and incubation time affected crude oil degradation. An effective yeast consortium for oil degradation is T20 consortium with an incubation period of 30 days, which result in 72.26 % oil degradation.

Abstract. Fauzi, Widodo H. 2019. Short Communication: Aphrodisiac plants used by Dayak Ethnic in Central Kalimantan Province, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 20: 1859-1865. Sexual dysfunction in men might render psychological disorders and household harmony. The prevalence increases with age and other risk factors such as systemic diseases and psychological factors. A community with no exception certain ethnic groups uses plants to fulfill various needs, including to treat sexual disorders in men. This paper aims to explore medicinal plants that are often used for aphrodisiacs by Dayak ethnic in Central Kalimantan Province, Indonesia. The method was carried out through reviewing literature, searching for various references and analyzing data of the exploration of ethnomedicine and community-based medicinal plants in Indonesia held in 2012 and 2015. Of the 9 Dayak ethnic groups surveyed, only four ethnic groups (Bawo, Taboyan, Tomum and Siang) posses an aphrodisiac formula. The plants used by ethnic Dayaks for aphrodisiacs are Eurycoma longifolia Jack., Luvunga sarmentosa (Bl.) Kurz., Rennellia elliptica Korth., Mimosa pudica L., Lepisanthes amoena (Hassk) Leenh., Fordia splendidissima (Miq.) Buijsen., Imperata cylindrica (L.) Raeusch., Ficus deltoidea Jack., Koilodepas bantamense Hassk., Eusideroxylon zwageri Teijsm. & Binn., Gnetum sp., Caryota sp. and Calamus sp.

Abstract. Pattiselanno F, Apituley JRM, Arobaya AYS, Koibur JF. 2019. Short Communication: Using wildlife for local livelihood – Experiences from the Bird’s Head Peninsula, West Papua, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 20: 1839-1845. Wildlife products are valuable commodities, and wild meat is considered as premium value because it has a high value per unit weight compared with other forest products Wildlife products are commonly used for consumption purpose, generating household income and cultural reasons. Because cultural values differ among ethnic groups, it is important to understand how wildlife contributes to local livelihoods in different areas of the Bird’s Head Peninsula. Data was obtained opportunistically during fieldwork to different parts of West Papua Province from 2010 to 2018. Study sites were not intentionally selected, but they were considered during the involvement of authors in research and survey across the Bird’s Head Peninsula of West Papua Province Data was collected through indirect observation and semi-structural interviews. A literature review was also completed to supplement the primary data collected from the fieldwork. The results indicated many people rely on wild meat as an alternative source of food for the household. Wildlife also offered forms of income generation such as sale of bushmeat products. Acquisition of animal parts as cultural artifacts, for personal adornment or for trophies was still a widespread practice throughout the areas. Religious and cultural aspects also contributed significantly to the use of wild meat for traditional or spiritual aspects as well. Finally, some reasons have been identified that derive peoples’ attitudes in using wildlife across the Bird’s Head Peninsula, and they are for consumption, sale and the relationship between wild animal species and cultural values.

Abstract. Sari N, Patria MP, Soesilo TEB, Tejakusuma IG. 2019. The structure of mangrove communities in response to water quality in Jakarta Bay, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 20: 1873-1879. The waters of Jakarta Bay, which is a habitat for mangrove vegetation, have been polluted caused by many human activities such as development of housing, industry, tourism and facilities along the coast, and reclamation of man-made islands. The islands reclamation has caused changes in ocean current pattern and has impacts on material mobilization in the waters. The mangroves have experienced degradation as well since long time ago. The purpose of this research was to investigate the responses of mangrove vegetation to the quality of water in disturbed areas in Jakarta Bay to be used as baseline information for mangrove forest management in the area. Analysis of vegetation was used to examine mangrove community structure with the results were then related to the measurements on water quality using simulation modeling. The results show that mangrove forests in Jakarta Bay have an average Important Value Index (IVI) for all levels of life stage 95.7% with relative density of 28.85%, relative frequency of 29.21%, and closure relative of 38.62%. These results indicate that the mangrove forests in Jakarta Bay are under the criteria of damaged or disturbed according to the Minister of Environment Regulation. The mangrove forests were dominated by Avicennia marina, Avicennia lanata, Rhizophora apiculata, Sonneratia caseolaris, and Sonneratia alba. The average of ocean current velocity was 0.04-0.08 m/s. tides were single type with short waves generated by wind. The water discharge from 13 rivers were 205 ± 97 m3/s and the water discharge from power plant 224.9 m3/s. The heavy metal whereas The average pH was 7.75; Dissolved Oxygen 4.68 mg/L; turbidity 5 m; Total Suspended Solid (TSS) 50.95 mg/L; and salinity 6.6 ‰. The result of grain size analysis showed that most sediments obtained was in the form of silt with a mixture of little clay and sand. The responses showed that there was a reinforced pattern for pH, temperatures, rainfall, brightness, sediment, DO, and ocean current, with a trend of exponential growth in two years next of important value index of mangroves in response to water quality in Jakarta Bay. The heavy metals of Pb have concentrations of 65-104 ppm in sediments and 38-60 ppm in the water column; Zn has 150-258 ppm in sediment and 42-140 ppm in water column; Cu has 34-72 ppm in sediment and 13-30 ppm in water column; Ni has 33-39 ppm in sediment and 40-50 ppm in water column; Cd has 5.9-8 ppm in sediment and 8.5-15 ppm in the water column. The heavy metals, TSS, and water river discharge have balance-decay pattern. The amount of river water discharge entering Jakarta Bay, the heavy metals, and the low level of ocean currents cause coastal waters of Jakarta Bay to become muddy puddles that cannot flow properly. These conditions make the mangrove forest habitat becomes polluted and the mangrove vegetation degraded. Therefore, all of these things need to get serious attention so the mangrove forests can be restored and the function of mangroves can return to normal.

The intertidal gastropods (Gastropoda: Mollusca) diversity and taxa distribution in Alas Purwo National Park, East Java, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 20: 2016-2027. Gastropods play an essential role in the ecosystem and can be used as bioindicators of environmental pollution. Understanding of their behavior, habitat, and distribution, and how these factors evolve, is crucial. This paper aimed to describe the diversity of the gastropod community and their spatial taxa distribution, based on the specimen frequency across all observed samples, in the diverse environment of Alas Purwo National Park (APNP), East Java, Indonesia. We studied eight beaches and two mangroves areas, and the study areas of the intertidal zone divided into upper, middle, and lower zones towards the sea. The purposive sampling was used to determine the locations and multi-plot quadrats for observations. The diversity of gastropods was elucidated by using the Shannon and Simpson indexes, while the Morisita index was applied for analyzing their spatial distribution pattern. However, the correspondence analysis and principal component analysis were performed using the software of PAST 3.22 for describing the diversity profile and individual rarefaction of gastropods together with environmental quality. There were three beach types: rocky, sandy, and muddy beaches were found in APNP. The highest diversity index (H’) was found on Pancur beach: H’ = 3.271, D = 0.947 of 67 species. The spatial distribution pattern of gastropods species was weakly clumped to random, with Ip: 0.165 - 0.016. Gastropods, both predators and scavengers, were distributed from the upper to lower zones. The distribution of gastropods in APNP is mostly in type B. These results expand our knowledge of gastropods diversity and distribution of Indonesia’s beach and can contribute to the future environmental assessments of biodiversity of tropical intertidal zones worldwide.

Abstract. Effendi Y, Pambudi A, Pancoro A. 2019. Metagenomic analysis of Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. cubense-infected soil in banana plantation, Sukabumi, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 20: 1939-1945. Fusarium wilt is one of the most devastating diseases in banana plantation which caused by soil-borne fungal pathogen Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. cubense. In this study, metagenomic analysis of 16SrRNA gene was performed for comparing composition, richness, and abundance of healthy soils and Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. cubense (Foc)-infected soil microbes in rhizospheral area of banana plants. Data showed about 10969 OTU and 10755 OTU of bacteria were identified in healthy soils and Foc-infected soils respectively. The Foc-infected soils showed higher species abundance than healthy soil (ACE index 73,6 and 68,8 respectively). However, healthy soils have more taxa richness than infected-soil (Fisher index 447,7 and 343,4 respectively). Beta diversity analysis indicated infected-soils had lower bacterial diversity in comparison with healthy soils. About 37 phyla were identified and no statistical difference between both soil conditions in the OTUs abundance. However, Acidobacteria (22%) and Verrucomicrobia (13%) tend more abundance in the health soils in comparison in the infected soils 19% and 10% respectively, whereas Proteobacteria was found more abundance in the infected soil (11%) in comparison with the health soil (7%). Interestingly, high abundance of Xanthomonadaceae, member of Proteobacteria was identified in the infected soils which might have a positive correlation with incidence of Fusarium development in the soils.
