Abstract

Health management in Indonesian madrasahs faces significant cultural and structural barriers, including fragmented policies, resource constraints, and tensions between religious norms and public health imperatives. This educational ethnography examines how stakeholder perceptions shape the effectiveness of health policies in East Javanese Islamic schools. Over six months, the study employed participant observation, semi-structured interviews (n=32), and focus groups (n=8) across three madrasah levels (MI, MTs, MA) in East Java. Findings reveal a critical disconnect: while national policies like UKS (Usaha Kesehatan Sekolah/School Health Efforts) are implemented top-down, teachers and students perceive them as culturally misaligned and administratively burdensome. Notably, Islamic principles strengthened acceptance of hygiene and nutrition initiatives—e.g., handwashing protocols integrated into thaharah (ritual purity) lessons achieved 89% compliance. However, mental health policies faced persistent stigma, with 74% of teachers avoiding discussions due to perceptions of psychological struggles as spiritual weakness (dha'if al-iman). Students expressed strong preferences for participatory approaches, proposing peer-led "Health Muhadharah" (religious lectures) to replace didactic modules. The study concludes that effective health management requires: (1) cultural alignment of health protocols with Islamic ethics (e.g., framing mental health support as ihsan/excellence in self-care), and (2) co-creation of policies with stakeholders to ensure local relevance. Recommendations include decentralizing policy design to involve madrasah councils (syura) and leveraging Islamic concepts like maslaha (public interest) to overcome resistance. This underscores the necessity of context-responsive strategies in Muslim educational settings globally.

Abstract

This Study addresses the issue of fragmented health services in rural Indonesia, which hampers effective health promotion efforts. The collaboration between Islamic educational institutions, such as madrasahs and pesantrens, and Puskesmas represents an untapped resource for enhancing community health outcomes. The study aims to analyze the models of collaborative management utilized in Pace District to promote health through this partnership. It employs a qualitative case study approach involving interviews, focus group discussions (FGDs), and document analysis with 35 participants, including school principals, health workers, and community leaders, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of stakeholder perspectives. Key findings reveal that formalized partnerships based on memorandums of understanding (MOUs) have successfully improved vaccination coverage and nutrition education, demonstrating the potential of institutional collaboration in extending public health reach. However, challenges such as resource asymmetry—where one party has more assets or capacity than the other—and bureaucratic inertia slow the pace and efficiency of joint efforts. The study concludes that Islamic educational institutions significantly amplify the outreach capabilities of Puskesmas, but the success of these collaborations depends heavily on trust-building between the parties and structured coordination mechanisms to overcome administrative hurdles. This research highlights that fostering collaborative health promotion between religious education and public health sectors in rural Indonesia can address service fragmentation, leveraging the social capital and religious authority of Islamic institutions to support government health initiatives effectively. Building on this model may enhance sustainable health improvements in similar contexts with shared cultural and institutional characteristics.

Abstract

This research looked at how a specific Islamic boarding school in Nganjuk (Pesantren Miftahul Mubtadiin Krempyang) uses organized management methods based on Islamic principles to get its students living healthier lives. The study acknowledges that while these schools are great for overall student growth, making health a core part of traditional boarding life can be tough. The researchers talked to people, observed daily life, and looked at school documents. They found that the school uses Islamic management steps (like planning health programs and organizing them) and strongly links health activities to Islamic values (e.g., "cleanliness is part of faith"). The study concludes that this Islamic management approach is a powerful way for boarding schools to build a lasting health culture, and the lessons from this particular school can help others do the same. It also suggests ways to make it even better.

Abstract

Stunting persists as a critical public health challenge in rural Indonesia, demanding contextually relevant interventions. Recognizing the influential role of local institutions, this qualitative case study investigates the potential of rural Islamic educational institutions (Madrasah Ibtidaiyah - MI) in Nganjuk Region to integrate religious values into stunting prevention management. The research specifically aimed to analyze how Islamic values are incorporated within stunting prevention efforts at these MIs. Data was gathered through in-depth interviews with teachers, parents, and health workers, alongside observations and document analysis across five MIs. Key findings reveal that Islamic principles, such as the emphasis on balanced nutrition grounded in Islamic dietary ethics and hygiene practices linked to the concept of thaharah (ritual purity), significantly strengthen program acceptance and implementation. Framing health messages through these shared values enhanced cultural resonance and community engagement. However, significant challenges hinder optimal integration, including resource limitations (funding, materials, trained personnel) and gaps in parental awareness regarding stunting and optimal childcare practices. The study concludes that strategically integrating Islamic values offers a powerful, culturally sensitive approach to stunting prevention management within rural MI settings. Recommendations include formally embedding relevant health and nutrition concepts within the MI curriculum, fostering robust collaboration between educational institutions, health services, and religious leaders, and implementing targeted initiatives to increase parental knowledge and resource allocation to overcome existing barriers. This integration leverages existing trust and faith structures for more effective health outcomes.

Abstract

The study titled "The Role of Islamic Education Curriculum Management in Enhancing Health Literacy Among Muslim Adolescents at MA Darussalam Krempyang" addresses the ongoing challenge of low health literacy among Indonesian adolescents, despite the potential of Islamic education to effectively integrate health principles. MA Darussalam Krempyang serves as a distinctive example where the Islamic educational curriculum actively incorporates health education to address this gap. Through a qualitative case study approach, the research employs in-depth interviews with teachers, students, and school administrators, alongside curriculum analysis and literacy assessments, to explore how curriculum management influences health literacy outcomes. Key findings demonstrate that embedding health-related topics within Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh), theology (aqidah), and science subjects substantially enhances adolescents’ understanding of critical health issues including nutrition, hygiene, and reproductive health. This integration not only enriches students’ knowledge but also aligns health education with their religious and cultural contexts, making the learning both meaningful and relevant. The study concludes that effective curriculum management is crucial in bridging Islamic values with health education goals. Success depends on strategic alignment across educational objectives, curricular content, and evaluation mechanisms to ensure health literacy improvements are tangible and sustained. By emphasizing this synergy, MA Darussalam Krempyang exemplifies how madrasah aliyah settings can foster holistic adolescent development encompassing spiritual and physical well-being.

Abstract

In response to the growing emphasis on holistic student well-being within educational settings, this study investigates the strategic leadership role of principals in integrating Islamic values into school health management, using SMP Sains Terpadu Darussa'adah Pace, an Integrated Islamic School (Sekolah Islam Terpadu - SIT), as a case study. Recognizing the unique position of SIT schools in harmonizing faith and science, including health, and the principal's crucial function as both strategic leader and guardian of core values, the research aimed to analyze the specific role and strategies employed by the principal in developing and implementing Islamic value-based health management. Utilizing a qualitative case study methodology, the researcher gathered data through in-depth interviews with the principal, teachers, health coordinator, students, and committee members; observations of health activities, facilities, and school culture; and analysis of relevant documents like the school vision/mission, policies, lesson plans, and reports. The findings provide a detailed description of the principal's strategic leadership across functions (vision setting, planning, organizing, leading, monitoring), identify the specific Islamic values integrated into health strategies, outline key health programs championed by the principal, and highlight both enablers and challenges encountered. The study concludes that principals serve as pivotal catalysts for embedding Islamic values into the core of school health management, with SMP Sains Terpadu Darussa'adah Pace exemplifying effective leadership in aligning health strategies with Islamic principles, leading to specific recommendations for principals and Islamic schools aiming for holistic education and health promotion.

Abstract

This qualitative study investigates the strategies employed by Madrasah principals in managing school environmental health following the COVID-19 pandemic in Nganjuk, East Java. Through in-depth interviews with 15 principals and participatory observation across 10 rural Islamic schools (Madrasah Ibtidaiyah), the research identified critical approaches to sustaining hygiene and health protocols amid resource constraints. Thematic analysis revealed three core strategies: (1) Reinforcing Taharah (Cleanliness) as Religious Practice, where principals integrated handwashing and sanitation into wudu (ablution) routines, framing hygiene as an extension of Islamic purity obligations; (2) Adaptive Infrastructure Management, including repurposing zakat (alms) funds for touchless sinks and reorganizing prayer spaces to ensure physical distancing without disrupting religious activities; and (3) Community-Based Surveillance, leveraging parental networks (Majelis Taklim) for health monitoring and stigma reduction. Principals navigated challenges such as limited clean water access by collaborating with local pesantren (Islamic boarding schools) to share filtration systems, demonstrating resource-sharing rooted in Ukhuwah Islamiyah (Islamic solidarity). Findings underscore how principals blended religious values with practical innovation, transforming standard health protocols into culturally resonant actions. This alignment strengthened compliance—schools implementing Taharah-focused strategies reported 40% higher student hygiene adherence than those using generic protocols. The study argues that post-pandemic environmental health management in Islamic educational settings benefits from embedding secular requirements within religious frameworks, ensuring sustainability through community ownership. Recommendations include integrating fiqh al-bi‘ah (Islamic environmental jurisprudence) into principal training programs to bridge health policy and faith-based leadership.

Abstract

Background: The global drug availability crisis has become increasingly tangible since early 2025, with unprecedented tariffs on pharmaceutical imports, supply chain disruptions, and over 100 medicines in short supply worldwide. Approximately two billion people globally lack access to essential medicines. Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) in Indonesia face significant vulnerability to this crisis, yet possess traditional knowledge and available land that can be optimized through Family Medicinal Plants (TOGA) cultivation as a living pharmacy. Objective: This study aims to develop a management model for pesantren living pharmacy through TOGA cultivation as a strategic response to the global drug shortage crisis. Method: This qualitative study employs a grounded theory approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis involving pesantren administrators, santri, TOGA cultivation managers, and health practitioners in selected pesantren in [location]. Data analysis followed the Corbin and Strauss (2015) grounded theory procedure. Findings: The study identified three core categories: (1) the urgency of pesantren health independence amid global drug shortages, (2) the integration of TOGA cultivation into pesantren management systems, and (3) a four-phase living pharmacy management model encompassing planning, cultivation, processing, and utilization. Conclusion: A substantive theory of Pesantren-Based Living Pharmacy Management is proposed, offering a strategic framework for building health self-sufficiency in pesantren communities as a response to global pharmaceutical supply vulnerabilities.

Abstract

Background: Chronic diseases among santri (Islamic boarding school students) in Nganjuk pose physical and psychological challenges. Non-medical interventions based on Islamic spiritual practices such as istighfar (seeking forgiveness) and sholawat (praising the Prophet) are commonly used but lack theoretical grounding. Objective: This study aims to develop a grounded theory of istighfar and sholawat management as a non-medical intervention for santri with chronic illnesses. Method: A qualitative grounded theory approach was employed. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis involving 15 santri with chronic diseases, caregivers, and religious teachers in three Islamic boarding schools in Nganjuk. Data analysis followed Corbin and Strauss’s grounded theory procedure. Findings: The core category identified is “spiritual-emotional regulation through istighfar and sholawat,” consisting of four main processes: (1) awareness of illness as a spiritual signal, (2) structured practice of istighfar and sholawat, (3) perceived psychospiritual relief, and (4) transformation of coping mechanisms. Conclusion: Istighfar and sholawat function as a non-medical intervention that enhances resilience and spiritual acceptance. A substantive theory is proposed for integration into holistic care for santri with chronic conditions.

Abstract

Background: Health literacy among Indonesian adolescents remains alarmingly low, with 30.7% suffering from stunting, 11.2% experiencing undernutrition, and significant gaps in reproductive and mental health knowledge. Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) house millions of santri yet often lack structured health education curricula. Thibbun Nabawi (Prophetic Medicine) offers a holistic health framework rooted in Islamic teachings, but its integration into pesantren education remains limited and largely non-digital. Meanwhile, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming education, including in pesantren settings, enabling personalized and adaptive learning. Objective: This study aims to develop a health literacy management model for santri through a digital Thibbun Nabawi curriculum integrated with AI-based learning technologies. Method: This qualitative study employs a grounded theory approach (Corbin & Strauss, 2015). Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis involving pesantren administrators, curriculum developers, Thibbun Nabawi instructors, santri, and educational technology practitioners in selected pesantren in [location]. Data analysis followed the Corbin and Strauss grounded theory procedure. Findings: The study identified three core categories: (1) the urgency of structured health literacy through Thibbun Nabawi in pesantren, (2) the integration of digital platforms and AI in Thibbun Nabawi curriculum delivery, and (3) a four-phase health literacy management model encompassing curriculum design, digital content development, AI-assisted personalized learning, and evaluation. Conclusion: A substantive theory of Digital Thibbun Nabawi Health Literacy Management is proposed, offering a framework for integrating prophetic medicine into pesantren education through AI-enhanced digital learning, addressing the critical gap in adolescent health literacy in faith-based educational settings.
