Abstract

Periri Gumi is a traditional ritual that has been passed down from generation to generation as a form of gratitude to God Almighty for the harvest and safety, as well as an effort to maintain harmony between humans, nature, and God. This tradition is an important symbol in the social life of the diverse Batulayar community, where Muslims and Hindus live side by side. The purpose of this study is to understand how the cultural symbols contained in the Periri Gumi tradition are understood and interpreted by two religious communities, and how interactions built through this tradition foster harmony and social cohesion. This study uses a qualitative case study approach. Data collection techniques included direct observation, in-depth interviews with community leaders, religious leaders, and ritual participants, and documentation. Data analysis uses the symbolic interaction theory developed by Herbert Blumer, which emphasises the importance of meaning, symbols, and interaction processes in shaping social behaviour. The study’s results show that the Periri Gumi tradition has become a social and cultural space that enables harmonious interaction among religious communities. Symbols such as offerings, traditional processions, traditional clothing, music, and interfaith prayers serve as a medium of communication between communities. Each symbol is interpreted based on each party’s social experiences and religious beliefs, while still respecting the other party. This tradition not only strengthens local cultural identity but also serves as a means of social integration, reflecting values of tolerance, cooperation, and equality. Thus, Periri Gumi functions as an effective social mechanism in building bridges of dialogue and togetherness among religious communities amid the plurality of Batulayar society.

Abstract

Religious Moderation Based on Local Wisdom in Building Islamic-Christian Relations. This type of research uses qualitative research; data collection is carried out through observation, interviews, and documentation. The research questions in this study consist of two questions, namely, 1) how are interfaith relations in the community of Tangge Village, West Manggarai Regency, and 2) how can religious moderation based on local wisdom be strengthened in building Islamic-Christian relations in Tangge Village, West Manggarai Regency. The objectives of this study are to analyse interfaith relations among the people of Tangge Village, West Manggarai Regency, and to identify and describe the strengthening of religious moderation, grounded in local wisdom, in building Islamic-Christian relations in Tangge Village, West Manggarai Regency. This research shows that Tangge Village demonstrates strong religious moderation practices, rooted in cultural and religious values, which are key to harmony between individuals and groups. Harmonious social relations, built through religious moderation, strengthen interfaith brotherhood. Religious moderation is a solution to dealing with extremist and fundamentalist groups. Its application in a multicultural society requires education as the primary basis and a socio-religious approach in religious and state life.

Abstract

Islamic moderation in Indonesia is examined in this study, reflecting its growing importance amid increasing radicalization and socio-political challenges in the region. A systematic literature review and bibliometric analysis are utilized to assess publication trends, key themes, and collaboration networks within the field of Islamic moderation. The methodology includes quantitative analysis of publications indexed in Scopus and S.I.N.T.A., as well as qualitative synthesis of findings from the existing literature. Results demonstrate a marked rise in publications on Islamic moderation, with dominant themes in politics, education, and economics, and reveal extensive collaboration among local and international scholars. The findings underscore the need for a more comprehensive theory of Islamic moderation, offer recommendations for addressing gaps in the literature, and suggest strategies for policymakers to enhance the implementation of Islamic moderation. Additionally, the study identifies prospects for expanded international collaboration, providing insights that may inform global initiatives to foster moderate values and tolerance.

Abstract

The tradition of commemorating the passing of religious figures (haul) constitutes an integral component of the socio-religious landscape among Muslim communities throughout the Indonesian archipelago, including West Lombok. This study seeks to systematically analyse and describe the motivations underlying the high level of participation by the Muslim community in the Haul Akbar of TGH Ridwanullah At-Tauhidy in Babussalam Village. The phenomenon is examined through the theoretical framework of Max Weber’s rationality of social action. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The findings indicate that community attendance is motivated by two principal categories: intrinsic motivations, such as the pursuit of spiritual peace and the strategic aim of enhancing religious knowledge; and extrinsic motivations, shaped by cultural pressures within religious family environments and the charisma of TGH Ridwanullah At-Tauhidy. A Weberian analysis further identifies four pillars of action: traditional action in preserving local identity, affective action for emotional and spiritual fulfilment, instrumental rational action to address theological ignorance, and value-rational action expressed through devotion to the example set by the ulama. Thus, the haul serves as more than a death-commemoration ritual; it represents a complex sociological arena that continually fosters communal piety, reinforces social solidarity, and perpetuates a culture of mutual aid in the contemporary era.

Abstract

Religious moderation serves as a crucial mechanism for maintaining social harmony within contexts of religious, ethnic, and cultural diversity. In Bali, a prominent form of religious moderation rooted in local wisdom is Menyama Braya, a philosophy of brotherhood that emphasizes mutual respect and coexistence irrespective of background differences. This study analyses the practice of religious moderation grounded in the local wisdom of Menyama Braya among the Balinese ethnic community in the multicultural village of Monang Maning, Denpasar City. A qualitative approach is employed, utilizing the case study method. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. Data analysis applies Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of social practice, with particular attention to the interaction among habitus, capital, and field. The findings demonstrate that the values of Menyama Braya extend beyond cultural discourse and are internalized as habitus, manifested through social traditions such as mutual cooperation, respect for interfaith sites, and tolerance in religious practices. These traditions reinforce social and cultural capital, providing a foundation for sustaining cohesion and harmony among individuals of different faiths in a diverse urban environment.

Abstract

This research examines the values of social solidarity embedded in the Kaboro Co'i tradition in Wora Village, Bima Regency, within the context of ongoing modernization. Utilizing an ethnographic qualitative methodology, data were gathered through participatory observation, in-depth interviews with traditional leaders, community figures, and local practitioners, as well as supporting documentation. Data analysis employed the Miles and Huberman interactive model, which includes data collection, reduction, display, and conclusion drawing. The results indicate that the financial contribution recording system in Kaboro Co'i does not operate as a formal debt-credit mechanism; instead, it serves as a system of social memory and an ethical bond that sustains long-term relationships among residents. The tradition embodies key social solidarity values such as empathy, trust-based reciprocity, familial togetherness, and mutual cooperation (gotong royong). These aspects demonstrate a transformation of mechanical solidarity that adapts to contemporary socioeconomic pressures. In conclusion, Kaboro Co'i functions as an adaptive cultural strategy that maintains social cohesion and economic resilience, providing a counterbalance to the individualistic tendencies associated with modern life in the Wora Village community.

Abstract

This study analyses the role and practical application of religious moderation in fostering social harmony within the multicultural community of Taman Lingsar hamlet, West Lombok Regency. The region is characterised by a significant presence of both Muslim and Hindu adherents who engage closely within shared social and cultural contexts. Employing a qualitative case study approach, data were gathered through participatory observation, in-depth interviews with religious and traditional leaders, village officials, and examination of local documentation. Data analysis utilised Talcott Parsons’ Structural Functionalism theory, specifically the AGIL framework (Adaptation, Goal Attainment, Integration, Latency). The findings demonstrate that religious moderation is operationalised in the daily lives of the Lingsar community through practices of tolerance, respect for theological sensitivities (such as the prohibition of pork in Kemaliq), and interfaith participation. Local traditions, including the Perang Topat and the Kemaliq area, function as integrative spaces that preserve value patterns and unite distinct religious groups while maintaining their theological identities. Ultimately, social harmony in Lingsar is maintained because religious moderation is embedded both culturally and structurally, serving as a mechanism to prevent identity-based conflicts.

Abstract

The Rebo Bontong tradition represents a form of local wisdom among the Sasak people, embodying social, cultural, and spiritual values transmitted across generations. Despite the pressures of modernisation, the Memunggu Hamlet community continues to preserve this tradition. This study analyses the practice of the Rebo Bontong tradition and its impact on social cohesion and solidarity within the community. Employing a qualitative methodology grounded in social phenomenology and field research, data were collected through non-participatory observation, in-depth interviews with community and religious leaders, and documentation. Drawing on Talcott Parsons’ structural functionalism, the tradition persists because it fulfils four systemic prerequisite functions (AGIL): Adaptation (adjustment of the tradition to Islamic values and contemporary conditions), Goal Attainment (realisation of collective objectives such as safety and protection from misfortune), Integration (unification of residents across social strata through mutual aid and communal gatherings), and Latency (preservation of ancestral value patterns by traditional leaders for younger generations). The findings demonstrate that the Rebo Bontong tradition functions not only as a metaphysical ritual but also as an effective sociological mechanism. Its implementation strengthens social bonds, mitigates potential conflicts, fosters collective solidarity, and contributes to social stability within the community.
