Abstract

The present study aimed at investigating gender identity through the expression of interpersonal metadiscourse stance marking. The current study investigated male and female authors' pattern of stance markers utilization, focusing on totally 60 English and Persian articles, and English articles written by Persian speakers. Based on Xu and Longs'(2008) classification, five categories of stance markers (textual, epistemic, attitudinal, deontic and causation) were identified and the frequencies of their occurrences were computed. The differences in each group were investigated separately through running chi-square tests. Regarding English articles, it was found that both male and female writers used the same pattern of stance taking except the epistemic markers. Another finding of this study was that both male and female writers followed the same pattern of stance taking in Persian articles except the deontic ones. In English articles written by Persian speakers, female writers used the same pattern as their native counterparts, while male ones were affected mostly by their native language. Attending to stance taking patterns, this article provides an informative picture which illustrates the common preferences of disciplinary community especially between male and female writers. Hence, the implications of this study can be helpful in academic writing, in assessment, and textbooks.

Abstract

It is a relatively new field that examines how Korean culture affects Korean language use in terms of age difference in a corpus of computer mediated email discourse. The purpose of this descriptive study and experiment is to prove the close relationship between Korean language and culture. This paper shows the descriptive study of Korean culture in relation to language use. Korean culture acknowledges an inherent hierarchy with regard to age, and considers [+age] as relating socially to [+power]. When younger Koreans converse with older ones, they express different morpho-syntactic patterns, which is an age complex. The main task of the experiment was to examine the way through which the age complex is reflected by Korean honorific linguistic system in email discourse. I asked 15 Korean native speakers between the ages of 20 to 25 to write emails expressing an impositive request to [+age (46-50 years old)], [-age (below 25 years old)] and [=age] recipients. The results show significant differences in the use of grammatical features in emails written to [+age] recipients, as compared to emails written to [-age] and [=age] recipients. The implication of the findings is that the cultural values that are attached to age and aging in the Korean society affects Koreans? language use, which means Korean language and culture are closely intermingled.

Abstract

Abstract: This research was based on students? need in preliminary research which stated that most students (87%) need a new strategy in teaching and not all students have good achievements in reading texts (37.14%) in EFL classes. The writer used two-group, quasi-experimental, post test only design to investigate two techniques, i.e. ?one stays the rest stray? and ?lockstep? techniques, to increase students? achievements in EFL reading. Participants in this study included 61 college students who were taken as two intact groups. The result of statistical computations showed that the reading achievements of the experimental group increased and was significantly different from those of the control group. These students were able to have various competencies which might help keep students working on task, speaking orally, recalling the knowledge, summarizing the passage, and comprehending the text well andhappily.Keywords: one stays the rest stray technique, lockstep technique, reading achievement, positive interdependence, individual accountability and interpersonal skills.

Abstract

Using regression and descriptive analyses, this research was carried out to measure the nature of teachers? motivation as indicated by their job commitment and satisfaction, which was then used to predict the EFL teachers? competence. The participants were 42 high school English teachers from both public and private schools in Binjai, North Sumatera Province. Likert-type inventory on teachers? motivation, with items focused on job commitment and job satisfaction, and a fact-based, multiple choice assessment of teaching competences were employed. It was found that motivation as indicated by both teachers? commitment and satisfaction could have a significant impact on their competence. For the success of any school in achieving its predetermined goals, committed and satisfied human resources are therefore considered as the most critical assets. Thus, fostering commitment and satisfaction among teachers is essential because teachers, who are highly committed and satisfied, would tend to stay longer, perform better, and are actively involved in classroom, school and social activities.

Abstract

Engaging school teachers with academic reading is challenging for all teacher trainers, yet if teachers’ knowledge base is to be up-to-date the input of new research information is essential. Within the field of teacher professional development, few research studies focus primarily on teacher academic reading.  On the Auckland New Zealand TESOL diploma course reported on here, academic readings are key. They theorise the weekly lecture topics and provide practical strategies that embed the theory. Three approaches to academic reading are used.  These three approaches are the focus of the study reported here, exploring the attitudes of the 49 elementary and secondary school teachers over the two years of the part-time course. Quantitative questionnaire findings and relevant qualitative interview data which explicate the quantitative findings are reported on. The key finding was that, on average, the entire sample exhibited a large and statistically significant increase in engagement in academic reading over the two-year period. A majority of the teachers favoured the third approach to academic reading, being tightly structured, supportive reading groups rather than independent reading or reading presentation to a group. They valued the interdependence and reciprocity of the tightly structured reading groups.

Abstract

Abstract: This paper critically describes the main challenges English language teachers face in teaching in Indonesia. The subjects of the research were students and English teachers in twelve randomly selected junior high schools in government and private schools in five districts in Yogyakarta Province. A survey schedule, interviews with English language teachers, focus group discussions with students and class observation were used to gather the data. The results show that students’ motivation is more of an instrumental motivation, due to the requirements of the mandated national examination though English now is a global language and the 2006 curriculum targets communicative competence. On the other hand, the data indicated that teachers found English difficult to use in class. The classroom instruction was conducted mostly in the low variety of Bahasa Indonesia and in Javanese. The teachers claimed that it was due to students’ low motivation; in fact, the students’ eagerness to listen to the teachers as the models of English language expressions was good. Teachers need to motivate students to learn English by improving their teaching techniques as well as their speaking competence in class to achieve student integrative motivation as English is valuable for them.

Abstract

In the last two decades, teaching spoken English to EFL students has become a critical issue in the TESOL context. However, a few studies touch upon how EFL learners are taught to speak English spontaneously. Learning to speak English spontaneously in large classes becomes a big challenge for ESOL teachers because of space and time constraints. In response to this growing need, this article provides an empirical account of how modified role playing, more student-centered learning, is implemented as an innovative learning design in an EFL university setting where a large class is concerned. Data were garnered from open-ended and close-ended questionnaires, students’ personal narratives, and photovoices. These data were analyzed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Findings of the study show that the students were finally able to survive in their speaking tasks, engaging them in a real-life communicative encounter. This study concludes with some pedagogical implications for how a teacher as a curriculum designer engages students in motivating and anxiety-free speaking tasks.

Abstract

In the context of the role of culture in language learning, many textbook analysts have so far investigated the representations of cultures in EFL textbooks. Most of the previous findings on the study of culture indicate that EFL textbooks contain more about the cultures of inner circle countries compared to the expanding and outer circle countries. In Indonesia, this area of cultural issues in English textbooks appears to be underexplored. To narrow the gap, this study using the visual semiotic theory of Barthes (1977) examined the multicultural values represented in an Indonesian vocational high school English textbook through the visual images in the textbook. This study shows that there are four categories of multicultural values represented in the EFL textbook: respecting other people’s tradition, appreciating other people’s perspectives, appreciating other people’s cultural products, and appreciating women’s equal rights. These insights give students opportunities to enhance their intercultural communication competence (ICC) by appreciating cultural diversity and accepting racial and religious differences around them.

Abstract

This paper is concerned with the topic of gender in EFL classroom, particularly in Indonesian context. Owing to the framework proposed by Sunderland (1992), the paper focuses on the discussion of gender in classroom materials, i.e. English textbooks. Selected reading passages were analyzed within the framework of Transitivity system of functional grammar (Halliday Mathiessen, 2004; Haliday Mathiessen, 2014). The Processes in the texts (e.g. travel, walk, and climb) reveal that males were perpetually constructed as ‘adventurous’, ‘risk taker’, ‘active’, ‘independent’, and ‘capable’. Meanwhile, the Processes also indicate that the females were shaped as more ‘passive', ’expressive’, ‘nurturing’, and ‘unassertive’ than their male counterparts (Blackstone, 2003; Evans Davies, 2000). The findings suggest that the gender roles were presented in an asymmetrical manner. The paper provides recommendation in terms of how both teachers and students can develop gender awareness in the classroom practices through the use of the textbooks.

Abstract

Abstract: Based on the major dimensions of a communicative language test that Bachman proposed, this paper aims to have an investigation on the validity of the new CET-4 listening subtest in China from a communicative point of view. Both qualitative and quantitative methods are involved in the study. Material analysis falls into qualitative study, including analysis of the CET-4 testing syllabus and eight new CET-4 listening comprehension tests. Students’ scores of two tests and the questionnaires are analyzed quantitatively. Through analysis, it is found that the new CET-4 listening subtest has a high validity and can measure test-takers’ listening ability in real communication. First, the new CET-4 listening subtest has the quality of reliability. Second, the seven listening skills tested in this subtest can measure the communicative language ability required in the testing syllabus. The intra-correlation analysis shows that each part of the new CET-4 listening subtest focuses on different language abilities related to listening. Third, the authenticity of the new CET-4 listening subtest reaches a satisfactory level. The materials chosen in the test cover various topics and genres. Speakers’ pronunciation, tone and speed are in accordance with the real situation. However, some shortcomings also exist in the test design and should be improved later. For example, its limited item types cannot represent the task types in real life, and the actual input is too ideal to be authentic. Keywords: Communicative language ability, communicative language testing, listening comprehension, test validity
