Abstract

The present study reported self-reflective study on Instructional Design (ID) course at an English Education Department, East Java in a period of one semester.  In this study, I did self-reflection throughout the whole process of my teaching program applying variations of learning modalities. This self-reflection examined the problems experienced by pre-service teachers in designing lesson plan, examined impacts of implementing variations of learning modality in scaffolding the construction of group and individual lesson plan, and described response made by course participants having joined ID course. The data collection technique used to elicit problems faced by pre-service teachers in designing lesson plan were document analysis of lesson plan and conference with pre-service teachers. Field notes and diary were used to collect data about how variations of learning modalities (i.e. modelling, peer collaboration, individual task) help pre-service teachers design lesson plan. Written reflection made by pre-service teachers was used to collect data about responses towards ID course. The findings revealed that variations of learning modalities could help pre-service teachers in the process of writing effective lesson plan. Through modelling, pre-service teachers could recognize deeply about the features of lesson plan structure. Through collaboration, students could acquire both social skills (communication skill, responsibility, trust, respect, care, and tolerance) and academic skills (ability to create effective lesson plan). In independent task, pre-service teachers became more self-directed learners and gained confidence in accomplishing the task. The result of critical reflection revealed that pre-service teachers responded positively towards variations of learning modalities provided in ID course.

Abstract

In the context of the role of culture in language learning, many textbook analysts have so far investigated the representations of cultures in EFL textbooks. Most of the previous findings on the study of culture indicate that EFL textbooks contain more about the cultures of inner circle countries compared to the expanding and outer circle countries. In Indonesia, this area of cultural issues in English textbooks appears to be underexplored. To narrow the gap, this study using the visual semiotic theory of Barthes (1977) examined the multicultural values represented in an Indonesian vocational high school English textbook through the visual images in the textbook. This study shows that there are four categories of multicultural values represented in the EFL textbook: respecting other people’s tradition, appreciating other people’s perspectives, appreciating other people’s cultural products, and appreciating women’s equal rights. These insights give students opportunities to enhance their intercultural communication competence (ICC) by appreciating cultural diversity and accepting racial and religious differences around them.

Abstract

The study was conducted to investigate the portrayal of gender in English Language Teaching (ELT) for senior high school in Indonesia. Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and Semiotic by Roland Barthes's (1977) framework was chosen as the tool to elaborate on how is gender represented through visual and textual material depicted. The finding reveal that the materials contain various gender issues such as stereotypes, imbalance, and inequality. However, several illustrations emerge from the positive image of a female. The textual study suggests that as English textbooks play an important role in transferring ideologies and values, therefore the textbook writer should pay more attention to the gender issues in the educational sector.

Abstract

The present study uses critical discourse analysis (CDA) to examine the representation of cultural diversities in the first year of senior high school English textbook published by a non-government publisher. Data of the present study are texts and pictures that represent cultural diversities in an Indonesian ELT textbook. The findings revealed that there are four cultural categories based on Yuen’s cultural dimensions (i.e product, practice, person, and perspective) coming from inner, outer, and expanding circle countries. The implication is that the visual materials must be balanced with the verbal materials. Keywords: Critical discourse analysis, cultural diversities, ELT textbook, senior high school, Indonesia.

Using a narrative research design, data were collected from semi-structured interview with a Junior High School English teacher using purposeful sampling to provide rich information to answer research question. The results of the thematic analysis showed a big theme that emerged, i.e., strategies to develop the students’ oral communication skill. This big theme is divided into four sub-themes: strategies to develop the students’ dialogue skill, strategies to develop the students’ monologue skill, strategies to develop the students’ fluency, strategies to develop the students’ accuracy. In addition, the results of this research are expected to give meaningful contribution, not only for the other English teachers but also for the other researchers.

Abstract

This experimental research aimed to discover the effect of applying Group Investigation Method on vocational high school students’ reading comprehension. The participants were the eleventh grade students of SMK Negeri 1 Jember. The research participants was divided into two groups: experimental and control groups. The instrument used to collect the data was reading comprehension test. Product Moment formula was applied to measure the reliability of the reading test. The reliability coefficient of the reading test was 0.70, meaning that the reading test was adequately reliable. The data were analyzed by using t-test formula. The result of analysis revealed that the scores of reading test for the students in the experimental group were significantly different from the one in the control group at the significant level of 0.05. The t-test results indicate that applying Group Investigation Method significantly affected the students’ reading comprehension. It is suggested that English teachers apply Group Investigation Method to teach and enhance students’ reading comprehension.

Abstract

Textbooks are often perceived as a platform that could greatly influence students' development in terms of character. Students could receive influential peace education through textbooks as a medium of teaching and learning. Consequently, it is absolutely necessary for any textbook used by the teacher to contain the necessary peace values required to shape students' excellent character. This study was an effort to carefully examine the portrayal of peace values in English Language Teaching (ELT) textbooks for senior high school students in Indonesia. Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and semiotic by Roland Barthes's (1977) framework was selected as the tool to further elaborate on the kinds of peace values presents within the English textbook and also how exactly those peace values voice out the peace values. The result showed that the selected textbook has managed to integrate the necessary peace values. However, massive imbalances of representation can be identified due to the lack of peace with nature and the abundance of social peace.
