Core Subject :
Nawasena: Interdisciplinary Journal of Islamic Studies focuses on the study of contemporary Islamic thought, practices, institutions, and Muslim societies. The journal examines how Islamic teachings, intellectual traditions, values, and institutions interact with social and cultural transformations in the contemporary world. The journal positions Islamic Studies as its primary field of inquiry, while interdisciplinary perspectives are employed as analytical approaches to deepen the understanding of Islamic thought and Muslim social realities rather than as separate and unrelated disciplinary subjects. Nawasena publishes original research articles on contemporary Islamic thought and intellectual traditions; Islam and social transformation; Islamic education and the transmission of Islamic knowledge; Islam, culture, and Muslim identity; Islamic institutions and Muslim communities; Islam and contemporary social issues; and Islam, media, and digital religious practices. All submitted manuscripts must place Islamic Studies at the center of their analysis. Manuscripts discussing education, economics, law, politics, communication, psychology, technology, environmental issues, or other disciplines without substantial engagement with Islamic thought, values, practices, institutions, or Muslim societies fall outside the scope of the journal.

Abstract

The high unemployment rate among high school graduates demands a transformation in the orientation of madrasahs from merely conventional theological transmission to the comprehensive mastery of applied sciences. This research aims to formulate a vocational curriculum management model in Islamic Senior High Schools (Madrasah Aliyah) to enhance graduate independence. Utilizing a qualitative case study design at MA As-Syifa Balikpapan, data were collected through in-depth interviews with stakeholders, laboratory observation, and managerial documentation analysis. The findings reveal that the effectiveness of vocational management is supported by three fundamental strategies: (1) adaptive curriculum synchronization through direct collaboration with industries and vocational schools; (2) product-based learning implementation with a dominant practical ratio of 70:30; and (3) an evaluation system oriented towards product quality and alumni employability. Furthermore, this entire managerial construction is driven by an Islamic work ethic that positions skill mastery as a manifestation of piety. In conclusion, this governance model has proven effective in boosting the competitiveness and independence of graduates, both as young entrepreneurs and university students. This study contributes by offering a theoretical framework for contemporary Islamic vocational management that successfully integrates pragmatic industrial demands with spiritual values.

Abstract

Many Islamic educational institutions face the challenge of students performing religious rituals as a mere formality without deep spiritual internalization. This study aims to explore the experiential dimension of students' religiosity and dissect the transition process from ritual compliance to spiritual internalization. A qualitative approach was employed using a multi-site case study design at MA NU Lekok and MA Fathul Latif Rejoso. Data were collected through phenomenological in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation. The study identified a four-stage transformation model: institutional habituation, reflective catalysis through meaning-making, experiential engagement providing peace of mind, and autonomous internalization where worship becomes an existential need. Authentic spiritual internalization is achieved when madrasas successfully transform "mandatory" regulations into meaningful emotional experiences, resulting in substantive religiosity and self-regulating mechanisms in adolescents. This article offers a new theoretical framework for educators to understand the stages of students' spiritual development within formal educational environments.
Interaction of Qur’anic Metaphors and Modern Cognition: A Conceptual Metaphor Theory Approach Saefudin Saefudin

Abstract

This article aims to analyze the interaction between Qur’anic metaphors and modern cognition through the Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT) approach. The study is based on the assumption that metaphors in the Qur’an function not merely as rhetorical devices, but also reflect underlying cognitive structures that shape human understanding of abstract reality. The research employs a qualitative-descriptive method with a conceptual analysis approach, involving the identification, classification, and mapping of conceptual metaphors in Qur’anic verses into source domains and target domains as formulated in CMT. The discussion focuses on how Qur’anic metaphors—such as light, path, heart, and scale—resonate with universal cognitive mechanisms that are also recognized in contemporary cognitive linguistic studies. The findings indicate that Qur’anic metaphors exhibit strong conceptual correspondence with human cognitive patterns, while simultaneously enriching and extending modern conceptual metaphor frameworks through transcendental and ethical dimensions. In conclusion, the CMT approach enables a deeper understanding of Qur’anic metaphors as cognitive-religious constructs that remain relevant across time, and it opens an epistemological dialogue between Qur’anic studies and contemporary cognitive linguistics.

Abstract

The proliferation of social media has driven a significant transformation in the use of the Arabic language, particularly at the level of lexical meaning. This article aims to examine the epistemology of meaning in digital Arabic through a cognitive semantic analysis of shifts in the meanings of Arabic vocabulary as used on social media platforms. The study adopts a qualitative-descriptive approach, employing cognitive semantic analysis as its primary method, with a focus on linguistic data collected from various Arabic-language social media platforms. The data are analyzed by identifying patterns of semantic expansion, narrowing, shift, and metaphorization that emerge within digital communication contexts. The discussion demonstrates that changes in the meanings of Arabic lexical items are influenced not only by internal linguistic factors but also by cognitive, social, and cultural dimensions that shape how speakers perceive and represent digital reality. The findings reveal that social media functions as a new epistemic space in which meaning is reconstructed through collective experience, novel conceptualizations, and multimodal interaction. In conclusion, the evolution of Arabic lexical meaning on social media reflects the epistemological dynamics of contemporary Arabic, wherein meaning is inherently flexible, context-dependent, and cognitively constructed by its speech community within digital environments

Abstract

This study aims to develop an emotional Arabic corpus and to examine affection classification based on balāghah structures as an analytical framework. The primary objective is to provide a computational model capable of detecting and classifying emotions in Arabic texts while considering aspects of classical stylistics. The methodology involves the collection of Arabic textual data from both classical and contemporary literary sources, affect annotation conducted by linguists and experts in balāghah, and the application of machine learning algorithms for emotion classification. The analysis focuses on the relationship between stylistic devices—such as majāz, tashbīh, isti‘ārah, and other rhetorical patterns—and the emotional intensity represented in the corpus. The results indicate that balāghah structures contribute significantly to classification accuracy, particularly in detecting subtle and context-dependent emotional nuances. The developed classification model demonstrates superior performance compared to purely lexicon-based approaches, achieving an improvement in accuracy of approximately 12–15% in complex emotion categories. These findings highlight the relevance of traditional linguistic approaches in modern affective analysis and open opportunities for the development of Arabic natural language processing (NLP) applications that are sensitive to emotional and rhetorical contexts. In conclusion, the integration of balāghah structures into an emotional corpus can enhance computational understanding of the affective dimensions of the Arabic language while also providing a methodological contribution to the fields of linguistics and artificial intelligence.

Abstract

Digital transformation has reshaped Islamic Studies not only by expanding access to religious knowledge but also by altering the ways knowledge is produced, validated, interpreted, and disseminated. This study aims to analyze the relationship between Islamic scholarly tradition and technological transformation in the digital era by focusing on four interrelated dimensions: scholarly authority, source validity and verification, methodological adaptation, and digital ethics and literacy. The study employs a qualitative library research design with a critical-conceptual approach. Relevant scholarly literature, primarily published between 2021 and 2026, was selected purposively and analyzed through thematic classification, comparative reading, and conceptual synthesis. The findings show that digital platforms and algorithmic mediation have reconfigured patterns of religious authority by introducing new forms of visibility and legitimacy that may compete with conventional scholarly credentials. At the same time, digital databases, artificial intelligence, and digital humanities offer significant methodological opportunities while creating new challenges concerning source authenticity, contextual accuracy, algorithmic bias, and epistemic accountability. The study argues that Islamic scholarly tradition and digital technology should not be positioned as opposing domains. Instead, responsible Digital Islamic Studies requires competence-based scholarly authority, layered source verification, an appropriate division of epistemic functions between technological tools and human scholars, and critical digital literacy grounded in ethical responsibility. From an integrative-interconnective perspective, technological innovation becomes academically meaningful when it strengthens rather than replaces the methodological and epistemological foundations of Islamic scholarship.

Abstract

Developing Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) in Islamic Religious Education (PAI) is important to equip students with the ability to analyze, evaluate, problem-solve, and reflect on Islamic values. This study aims to analyze PAI learning strategies that contribute to the development of HOTS through a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) in the Scopus database, yielding 14 articles that were thematically analyzed. The results show six main strategies, namely active-collaborative learning, inquiry and dialogue, experiential contextual learning, digital technology utilization, student-centered transformative learning, and value-based reflective learning. These strategies give rise to cognitive activities such as asking, exploring, discussing, analyzing, evaluating, solving problems, arguing, and reflecting. These activities produce HOTS skills such as critical thinking, creativity, reasoning, problem solving, argumentation, reflection, cognitive flexibility, and ethical reasoning. The findings confirm that learning strategies do not directly form HOTS, but rather through students' cognitive activities as the main link. Thus, developing HOTS in PAI requires an active, dialogical, contextual, and reflective learning design.
