Core Subject :
ARSNET is a scholarly journal dedicated to capturing creative exploration in design process. Abbreviated from architectural design network journal, ARSNET serves as a platform for various design disciplines; from architecture, interior, and other spatial design discourses. The journal focuses on contemporary design approaches and practices in Indonesia informed by its social, cultural, and environmental contexts, in parallel to the development of design discourses globally. It takes particular interest in the behind-the-scenes processes: the inquiries, experiments, trial and errors, and speculations, be it performed individually or collaboratively as part of professional or pedagogical design practices. The journal is also interested in understanding how these creative processes apply in current times of technological advancements. Discussion of these creative processes must be theoretically engaged, creating a dialogue between academic discourse and design practice. Authors are invited to submit manuscripts that address design exploration, which may include but not limited to creative processes that expand design methods, creative processes that question or speculate ideas that trigger design possibilities, or creative processes within the pedagogical settings. Submissions in the form of project reviews and academic design project reflections are also welcomed, recognising the potentials of a multidisciplinary outlook and utilisation of mixed media within the design process.

Abstract

The architectural discussion of multiplicity moves beyond the preoccupation with architecture as a fixed, conclusive, and eternal entity. The collection of articles in this issue of ARSNET investigates the multidimensionality of architecture. The explorations in this issue span from the discussion of multi-layered meaning and temporalities of architecture, to the dynamic representation and spatial operation of multiplicities. Through inquiries on multiplicity-driven design methods, this issue projects the expanded and open field of architecture, appreciating the different forces and processes of society.

Abstract

The role of museums in Botswana has evolved from collecting ethnographic objects and exhibition development to architectural heritage conservation. This paper explores the evolution of museum development through case studies of the National Museum in Gaborone and a regional museum, the Phuthadikobo Museum in Mochudi. The study examines exhibition practices in these museums by discussing the limitations of traditional methods of exhibition and arguing in favour of a multi-layered exhibition method. Both the National Museum and Phuthadikobo Museum have now transformed into cultural institutions which now undertake architectural heritage conservation projects. These projects include the National Museum project which recreates three huts representative of the vernacular architecture of different tribes which we argue is a heritage-making project. The Phuthadikobo Museum proposes for an open-air museum that conserves the existing buildings in situ and addresses the intersection of heritage conservation, a sense of history, intangible heritage, and lived traditions. Situated within the debates on museum development and heritage conservation, the paper considers how museum development in Botswana could address the challenges of museum exhibitions and the questions on heritage authenticity.

Abstract

There is no escape from time; that includes architecture which dominantly discusses the space. This paper aims to explore more about our understanding of the various times within space and its corresponding stories. Notably, this study looks at the context of the narrative environment where stories are imbued in space to enhance their engagement with the audience. Time in a narrative is presented through the narrated time and the real-world time where the audience of the narrative perceives it. Both types of time can be overlapped, whether the audience is consciously aware of that or not. Two case studies are conducted to understand overlapping multiple time layers in the narrative environments. Through a personal visit to Museum Kebangkitan Nasional and participation in the Secret Cinema event, data is gathered by taking photos, looking for official publications, and time-count during the experience. It is found that time can be spatialised through the explicit transition of graphics, a play of lighting, and overall spatial organisation that affect the pace and duration of the narrative in space.

Abstract

This paper attempts to read the presence of paratransit modes of transportation and its relation to the pedestrian movement in the context of urban space. The argument of this paper is built by conducting observations and analysis using unformed drawing on a type of non-motorised vehicles, namely the becak, which operates in the old city area of Surabaya, East Java, Indonesia. Unformed drawing becomes relevant to use because it can record quickly and can contain a more layered information. By placing unformed drawings as an investigative tool, observations are made by reading becak critically by highlighting its various role in urban space when the vehicle is not moving and stops for a certain duration of time. This study aims to reveal the aspects possessed by becak as a paratransit so that it has the potential to interfere in social space, even though it is not moving. Representation of these aspects through unformed drawings demonstrate multiple flexible condition of becak and multiple relations of becak within the movement space in urban context. The study concludes with an array of creative intervention of becak to invite the collective and dynamic uses of urban space.

Abstract

This study discusses the formation of mediated space as a space which combines actors and entities across the real and virtual environment. The study of mediated space in architectural discourse largely emphasises its experiential aspect, and only a few studies explore the formation of mediated space and the architectural elements which spans between the real and virtual environments. This mix of real and virtual environments is made possible through the involvement of the screen as the technological device that mediates the connection between them. This study investigates this process of mediation, focusing on the framing strategy of the virtual environment on the screen, in order to establish an engagement with the actor in the real environment. Understanding this formation process can further inform the potential of virtual space as the setting in our spatial practice, expanding the existence of architectural space.

Abstract

This paper aims to investigate and demonstrate how the idea of folding can be used as an adaptive and flexible design method in residential design. Adaptive architecture demonstrate fluidity of architecture that arrange between the internal and external conditions of the built environments, in relation with humans and their environment, as well as the technology construct such conditions. Current literature on folding in architecture have outlined the application of such method in spatial configuration and structural system to allows flexibility and ease future modification. The folding house model in this paper shows the idea of folding as an adaptive strategy and flexibility through to the development of its spatial layout, structural system, as well as flexible interior units that can be folded as needed. A folding house that can be folded, shifted, expanded and moved shows that the house can move and grow together with its occupants. The house design explored in this study then positions the method of folding as an effort to unite the occupants with its surrounding living environment.
