Abstract

This study aims to describe The Jakarta Post structure in reporting the case, to investigate how the major participants are reported in the texts, and to uncover meanings constructed from the text. The study focuses on headline news reporting Nazaruddin’s bribery attempt case which has been published by The Jakarta Post. The analyses of these reports comply with the frameworks of Critical Discourse Analysis, especially Van Dijk framework, Socio Cognitive Approach(SCA)(2009). First, macro propositions and news schemata are examined, described, and interpreted on the level ofmacrostructure and superstructure. Then, these are followed by an examination of participants based on the representations using microstructure analysis. The study finds that the texts are dominated by participants’ comment and there is not any conclusion. The study also finds that there are two major participants in the texts, namely, Nazaruddin and Mahfud; Nazaruddin is represented negatively, while Mahfud is represented positively. Key Words: The Jakarta Post, discourse, macrostructure, superstructure, microstructure, and meaning.

Abstract

This research entitled Focalization in Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner focuses on how focalization relates to the narrative and its effect towards the story. Employing Genette’s (1980) theory of narrative and focalization, the research finds that the two types of focalization, internal dan external, create different effects on the story. Two major effects of focalization make the story become more relatable and helps the story evoke the reader’s curiosity. These effects further emphasize the prominent issues found within the story. These findings have shown how focalization in the novel successfully invites the reader to feel sympathetic towards the human aspect portrayed in the story. It is expected that the research would give the insight into the use of focalization and its effect on the narrativeKeywords: Focalization, Narratology, Genette’s theory, focalizer

Abstract

Cohesion in a literary text appears to receive less scholarly attention, and the present study attempts to explore how cohesion is realized in a dramatic text Oedipus the King. This study, therefore, examines the use of grammatical and lexical cohesive devices in the dramatic text and its contribution to how the story proceeds. This study is descriptive in nature. In analyzing the data, this study employs theoretical frameworks based on Halliday and Hasan (1976) concerning the concept of cohesive device analysis and Gerot‟s and Wignell‟s point of view (1994) on cohesion interpretation. The data include the expressions used in the drama, and the analysis focuses on the realization of cohesive devices in the text. This study reveals that the text applies all types of cohesive devices, which cover 1,606 grammatical cohesive devices and 341 lexical cohesive devices. This study also shows six ways in which cohesive devices contribute to how the story proceeds. They are (1) to keep track of the participants, (2) to avoid repetition and text redundancy, (3) to control the discourse direction, (4) to emphasize an event, (5) to reduce monotony in language use, and (6) to add information on participants or events. This study is expected to contribute to the understanding of how a story is presented in a literary work, especially a dramatic text. Keywords: grammatical cohesive device, lexical cohesive device, dramatic text, discourse analysis

Abstract

The research investigated variations of speech act realizations in The Jakarta Post readers’ forum.  The research focused on the speech acts found in The Jakarta Post readers’ forum and the variations made when a speech act was realized by using a speech acts theory proposed by Bach and Harnish (1979). Based on the theory, speech acts are classified into four major categories in which each category consists of subcategories in a system namely, a taxonomy of communicative illocutionary acts. The data were obtained from six pages of The Jakarta Post readers’ forum online edition under the heading of the topic about a lack of religious tolerance.  The data were analyzed by categorizing the kinds of speech acts and the variations of each category according to speech acts classification provided by the taxonomy. The research founds that the kinds of speech acts realized by the contributors to the readers’ forum were Constatives, Acknowledgments and Directives. Each of which was comprised of finer classes of speech act variations. The research concluded that the readers’ forum has been used to serve several functions in accommodating its contributors’ beliefs, feelings and desires. The contributors provided many reasons in form of beliefs to encourage a reasonableness of the blaming/complaint/critique or even an urgency of the order/asking/advice.Keywords: Speech acts, Speech acts schema, Taxonomy of communicative illocutionary acts

Abstract

This paper entitled “Non-Observance of Maxims in Ask.fm Social QA Website” investigates the types of maxims and non-observance of maxims which are broken on purpose by Ask.fm users. It also examines some possible reasons for breaking the maxims. By employing Grice’s (1975) cooperative principle, this qualitative study examines one hundred interactions of Ask.fm users. The findings reveal that maxim of quantity, relation and manner are types of maxims which are not obeyed by the users. In addition, the types of non-observance of maxims identified in this study are flouting and opting out. Finally, reasons for breaking maxims are due to the intention to create jokes, to please others and to avoid cyberbullying. Overall, the findings suggest that by performing non-observance intentionally, it does not necessarily lead to communication breakdown. In fact, it made the conversation in Ask.fm more interesting, relax, and lively. Keywords: Grice’s Cooperative Principle, Non-observance of maxims, social media, website, Ask.fm

Abstract

This study is a historical linguistic investigation entitled The Phonemic − Syllabic Comparisons of Standard Malay and Palembang Malay Using a Historical Linguistic Perspective which aims to explore the types of sound changes found in Palembang Malay. The investigation uses a historical linguistic comparative method to compare the phonemic and syllabic changes between an ancestral language Standard Malay and its decent language Palembang Malay. Standard Malay refers to the Wilkinson dictionary in 1904. The participants of this study are seven native speakers of Palembang Malay whose ages range from 20 to 40 years old. The data were collected from the voices of the participants that were recorded along group conversations and interviews. This study applies the theoretical framework of sound changes which proposed by Terry Crowley in 1997 and Lily Campbell in 1999. The findings show that there are nine types of sound changes that were found as the results, namely assimilation (42.35%), lenition (20%), sound addition (3.53%), metathesis (1.18%), dissimilation (1.76%), abnormal sound changes (3.53%), split (13.53%), vowel rising (10.59%), and monophthongisation (3.53%). Keywords: Historical linguistics, standard Malay, Palembang Malay, comparative method, sound change, phoneme, syllable.

Abstract

This study explores some important issues, namely the occurrences of code switching types, function, and the language attitudes of English and Indonesian students department toward the use of code switch in the interview with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY). The data were collected through distributing questionnaires to respondents of the English students (15 persons) and the Indonesian students (15 persons) of UPI and compiling the documents of interview transcripts taken from www.presidenri.go.id. Some theories were used to analyse the data, namely Poplack (1980) was used to identify types of code switching, Koziol (2000) was applied to investigate functions of Code Switching, while Lambert (1967) was implemented to find out the attitude of the viewers’ toward the use of Code Switch by President SBY. Based on the results of analysis, it shows that there were three types of code switching found in President SBY’s interviews e.g. Intrasentential Switching, Intersentential Switching, and Tag Switching. In term of functions of code switching, nine functions were identified namely Reiteration, Personalization, Untranslatability, Substitution, Mitigating Message, Interjection, Emphasis, Clarification, and Quotation. Moreover, the findings from the questionnaires reveal that most respondents both from English and Indonesian Department perceived negatively to the use of Code Switching done by President SBY in the interview (17 persons). Some respondents who gave the negative attitude stated that the use of Code Switching did not provide the proper use of Indonesian according to EYD (ejaan yang disempurnakan), but it was considered to ruin Indonesian language structure. Abstract

The novel entitled My Life as a Stuntboy is one of adolescent novels that has several issues to explore. The issue of power relation becomes the main focus of the present research, which is aimed to answer the question of what meanings can be made from the portrayal of parent–child power relation. Power relation in the novel is seen through the conflicts that occur specifically between parents and their child as the main characters of this novel. The data were analyzed by using Dekovic, Gracia-Ruiz, Hernandez-Cabrera, Maiquez, and Rodrigo (2012) conflict resolutions: negotiation and dominance, and Foucault’s (2003/2006) theory of power that states the power which occurs in familial relations includes sovereignty and disciplinary power. The findings of the research revealed that the conflicts in the parent-child relationship are triggered by parents’ expectations toward their child. The conflicts involved the issues related to studying, Frank the monkey, and the child’s wish. Overall, these conflicts were caused by the parents’ demands for the child to be more responsible. The role of society is also found to have affected the parents’ expectations toward their child’s behavior and future. Therefore, based on the findings, it can be concluded that the meaning that can be made from the portrayal of parent–child relationship is that parents use their power to teach their child to be responsible citizen. Keywords: adolescent literature, conflicts, power relations, parent-child relation
