Abstract

This research aims to identify the types of code-switching and code-mixing used by an Indonesian VTuber and the functions behind them. The data are taken from a live-streamed video of an Indonesian VTuber, Kobo Kanaeru, on YouTube. Descriptive qualitative method is employed in conducting this research. Several theories are used in the analyzing process of this research, such as Hoffmann (2017), Wardhaugh (2005), and Crystal (2008) to identify and analyze the code-switching and code-mixing types. Hoffman (2017) is also used to analyze the functions of the code-switching and code-mixing. The findings of this research discover that intra-sentential switching and intra-sentential mixing are the dominant types of code-switching and code-mixing. This shows that Kobo preferred to do code-switching and code-mixing for shorter English clauses and words only, and it indicates that Kobo is not very fluent in speaking English. It is also found that Kobo used code-switching and code-mixing mostly to talk about a particular topic. It is because in her live-streamed video, she only talks about the game she is playing in her live-streaming or other topics that comes from her viewers in the comment section.

Abstract

The study explores the teacher's domination in Whiplash film by utilizing power relation theory by Foucault (1995). Particularly, the study aims to examine the portrayal of domination in the teacher-student relationship. With regard to research design, this study employed a descriptive qualitative research design since the aim of the study is to explore a certain social phenomenon, which is the teacher’s domination in the film, entitled Whiplash. By using a close film's dialogue and character development analysis, segmentation of scenes was classified into parts of domination action in the movie. The findings of this study reveal that power relations are exercised through three stages of power domination: disciplinary, negotiation, and resistance. This finding shows us that power relations are all around us, from a minor scale of family, education, and politics. Overall, this study has shed light on the portrayal of teacher-student relationships in media and its potential impact on societal perceptions and expectations of these dynamics.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the short movie Runaway, directed by a Chicago artist and musician, Kanye West, to find the meaning stored in the sign in the work using Roland Barthes’ (1977) semiotic theory. This theory interprets things like words, images, sounds, gestures, and objects to embrace any system of signs regardless of their nature and limitations. According to Barthes (1977), signs are divided into two types, which are denotative and connotative. Denotative is the most apparent meaning of the symbol while connotative describes a concept that is connected to a word or evoked by an emotion or a cultural value. The study has revealed that there are five significant signs in Runaway, in which Kanye West, who is the main character, runs in a forest, a herd of deer, ballerinas in black costumes, the phoenix, and Ku Klux Klan organization. This finding suggests that analyzing literary work like movies, songs, novels, and other forms of art needs more than just literal meaning. There could be other meanings underlying the printed texts or images, which can reveal the cultural values behind the work.

Abstract

The Indonesian national law states that the National Education System could be universally implemented in a complete and totally integrated manner. There are three key words to ponder: universal, complete, and integrated. As a replacement, a complement, and/or a supplement to formal education, community education ideally should have had an appropriate system and management. The present study aims to reveal issues in the implementation of community education in Indonesia as represented on an online media and to examine the solutions to those problems. The existence of such problems under investigation makes the values of the National Education System, namely universality, completeness, and integration appear to be impracticable. Under the framework of a qualitative method, this study used a Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) of Fairclough’s tradition (1997). The selected texts from an online media, called the Jakarta Post, were analysed by following the method and stages of dialectical-relational approach (Fairclough, 2013). The analysis was not only leaned on textual analysis, but also covered an inter-discursive analysis. This study reveals that there is a ‘social wrong’, namely the overwhelming level of responsibility possessed by community education. Generally, the problems of community education can be solved through the collaboration of various elements in the society. The Central Government, specifically, the Ministry of Education, should deal with and implement feasible programs starting from solving the philosophical issues: the different concepts of educating and teaching, being adaptive (able to deal with the current issues to be placed in pedagogical practices), and a fair distribution of funding (expenses for providing infrastructure). This form of contemplation can be considered to be a part of an essential discourse analysis to comprehend the dialectics of semiotic elements and textual evidence. Moreover, this study also shows that there are still many actual problems in the Indonesian education sector.

Abstract

This study examines the interactive meaning and level of realness in three Public Service Announcement poster for Covid-19. The data are in the form of pictures and they are obtained through accessing and downloading them from The Directorate of Health Promotion and Community Empowerment of Indonesian Ministry of Health’s Website. This study used qualitative approach since the researcher was trying to observe, interpret, and understand how an in-depth analysis of visual elements is used to make meaning out of a social phenomenon product which in this case are PSA posters. The theoretical framework used for this study is visual grammar by Kress and Van Leeuwen’s (2006) to analyze the interactive meaning and the degree of realness. The results of the study show that in term of the interactive meaning, the represented participant mostly look directly into the viewers which create a demanding gaze, it can be said that the producer of the PSA for Covid-19 in Indonesia intended to create some sort of persuasion for the viewers as the interactive participants to take some actions or to do something. Additionally, the Public Service Announcement also made in a way that encourage viewers to relate themselves with the represented participant and making both the viewers and the represented participant hold the same level of power. In terms of the degree of realness, it is also revealed that the PSA tends to give high value of realness or modality.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate and identify the linguistic feature of African-American Vernacular English (AAVE) used in the three selected songs of Jay Park’s album, The Road Less Traveled, and understand the underlying reasons for this AAVE use by applying sociolinguistic approach. The data were analyzed using several theories from Wolfram (2004), Fromkin et al. (2011), and Davenport and Hanna (2005) to analyse AAVE features and Cutler’s (2015) theory to analyze the underlying reasons why Jay Park employed AAVE in his songs. The data was gathered by attentively and comprehensively listening to the songs and reading the transcribed lyrics. The results were as follows: Jay Park used five out of the 13 grammatical features of African American Vernacular English, including copula absence, invariant be, remote been, specialized auxiliaries, and the use of "ain't" for negation. Additionally, he only employed two out of the proposed lexical features of AAVE, which are blends and clipping. Also, two phonetics features found in his music were regressive assimilation and deletion. Overall, the findings suggest that the use of AAVE by Jay Park in his songs is due to the authenticity of Hip-Hop culture regardless of the singer’s nationality and to express empathy and solidarity with the African-American community.

Abstract

Disability is a natural and inherent aspect of human diversity. This issue also becomes a relevant topic in literary works, for example novels. In novels, the existence of disability can influence and shape the readers’ perspective about it. Using Reams’ (2015) theory of characterization, this qualitative study aims to examine how the main character of The Distance Between Me and the Cherry Tree (2018) is positively portrayed and conveyed through narrations and dialogues. This study found that the main character is presented through three categories of characterization during two phases of her disabled experience, the denial phase and the acceptance phase. After experiencing physical changes and emotional upheaval as the effect of losing visual ability, the main character is portrayed as having an improved hearing ability, independent, confident, and brave in facing difficulties as a disabled person. The case of this study is expected to give insights into the challenges and daily experiences of individuals with disabilities and facilitate the growth of people’s awareness of disability.

Abstract

This article presents the semiotic analysis of the teenage love triangle in the lyrics of Taylor Swift’s songs folklore album entitled Betty, Cardigan, and August by using Barthes' (2013) and Horney’s (2013) psychological concept of love triangle. The research method used a qualitative method with an interpretive approach. The data were acquired by gathering and analyzing the lyrics of these songs to find the meaning of the teenage love triangle supported by journals and relevant data to enforce it. The meanings obtained through this analysis are connotation, denotation, and myth. The findings show that through denotation, connotation, and myth creation, Taylor Swift intertwines these songs to tell a broader story beyond the confines of a love triangle. They become a narrative trilogy that reflects the multifaced nature of relationships, the layers of emotions involved, and the resonance these experiences hold in the broader context of life and love. The characters in these songs portray different facets of human behavior showcasing various neurotic tendencies. This study can contribute positively in understanding how semiotics can be applied to song lyrics, helping us decipher the sign and communicative aspects of music and lyrics.

Abstract

In the world of movie posters, it employs a fusion of visual design to carry out a special meaning. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method to conduct a detailed analysis of the multimodal discourse on the poster of Moonlight (2016). The analysis employed a Kress and Van Leeuwen’s (1996) framework of multimodal discourse analysis (MDA) namely representational meaning, interactional meaning and compositional meaning. The findings of the analysis on the movie poster of Moonlight (2016) show a rich and multi-layered representational meaning that softly depicts the protagonist’s journey of self-discovery and the challenges he faced in a culturally diverse and economically disadvantaged neighborhood. Interactional meaning is established through intentional visual choices, fostering intimacy. The compositional elements, including salience, information value, and framing techniques, contribute to the poster's visual appeal and thematic context. The poster serves as an intricate advertising piece, employing narrative and conceptual representations to depict the protagonist’s self-discovery journey within a socio-cultural context.

Abstract

Manga has become a widely recognized trend around the world, with Western fans tend to prefer psychological and dark fantasy genres in the manga they read (Lin, 2005). One manga that caught the writer’s attention was Tatsuki Fujimoto’s Chainsaw Man., especially the journey of its protagonist, Denji. This research aims to analyze Denji’s journey by utilizing Vogler’s (1992) hero’s journey framework with a qualitative text analysis method. Through analysis of the first part of Chainsaw Man, this research finds typical patterns of Denji’s character development in the context of the hero’s journey. The results of the analysis show that although there are structural differences with the theoretical framework, Denji’s journey in Chainsaw Man reflects universal themes of conflict, character development, and sacrifice. This research contributes to the understanding of manga narrative construction and presents a new perspective on character development in Fujimoto’s work. In conclusion, Chainsaw Man not only enriches the diversity of manga as part of literature works but also becomes a source of ideas for further research on the hero’s journey in manga.
