Abstract

This study entitled “An analysis of code-switching used by the models and judges in Indonesia’s Next Top Model Cycle 2” aims to analyze the types and factors of code-switching that were found in the TV show. This study used a descriptive qualitative method in which the data were obtained from the video downloaded from YouTube. The data were in the form of utterances of all the models and judges in the TV show. Drawing on Appel and Muysken’s (2006) types of code switching and Hoffman’s (1991) factors contributing to code switching, the results of the study revealed that there were 167 types and 172 factors of code-switching in Indonesia’s Next Top Model Cycle 2: 13.17% (22) inter-sentential switching, 78.44% (131) intra-sentential switching, 6.59% (11) tag-switching, and 1.80% (3) inter-sentential switching in Bahasa Indonesia-Javanese. Meanwhile, the factors that found were talking about particular topic, being emphatic about something, interjection, repetition, intention to clarify, and expressing group identity. The most dominant factors were talking about particular topic 64.53% or 111 data and followed by intention of clarifying the speech content for interlocutors 14.53% or 25 data. The findings of the study indicated that intra-sentential switching was used dominantly to assure the audience of the show, which is mostly Indonesians, can understand entirely the conversation. Additionally, the subjects used code-switching to talk about particular topic, mostly for fashion terminologies, as it is intended to create an exclusivity for the people who belong to the same group, which is fashion enthusiasts.

Abstract

This qualitative study investigates maxim violations in police interviews. The data used is a transcription of three videotapes of the US police interviews with three suspects, from 2012 until 2018 which are obtained online through the website of Forensic Linguistic Data and Resources (https://www.forensicling.com/data-collections). It is found that the suspects violate three out of four maxims in cooperative principles formulated by Grice in 1975. The suspects violate the maxim of quality to mislead the police from getting the truth by giving false information. The suspects violated the maxim of quantity by giving excessive as well as little information to shift the particular topic being discussed. Lastly, the maxim of relation is violated by the suspects to avoid answering the topic brought by the police by changing the topic abruptly. The finding of this study shows that the suspects are being uncooperative to employ language strategies during the interviews which cause maxim violations in order to defend themselves and prove themselves that they are innocent.

Abstract

The present study entitled A Study on Conflict Modification in the Novel “I Am Number Four” and its Film Adaptation aims to investigate how conflicts affect the characterization of John Smith in the novel and the film adaptation. The study used a qualitative approach with textual analysis since the focus of the study is the conflicts identified in a form of text in the novel and dialogues in the film adaptation. Framed by the theory of adaptation (Hutcheon, 2006), the study found that even though the identified conflicts in the novel are the same as the identified conflicts in the film adaptation, they were still developed differently because of the dramatization done to the conflicts in the film adaptation, resulting in resolutions that are more violent. By reducing peace, distilling violence and adding violence, the identified conflicts in the film adaptation were modified into conflicts which made the characterization of John Smith more violent-looking, aggressive, unstable, and reckless compared to John Smith in the novel. Keywords: Adaptation; Characterization; Conflict

Abstract

The study explored the hero’s journey theory by Campbell and how it was used in the story of Percy Jackson. The study aimed to see the development of characters found in the story by using the closereading method and segmentation where sections of the story would be classified into their own segments matching the stages of the hero’s journey. The hero’s journey played a massive role in the story and influenced how the characters developed. The story stayed true to the fundamentals of the hero’s journey theorem and had archetypes of the story that had significant roles. The study can be improved further by analysing the intent of the characters.

Abstract

The study aims to analyze how the main character in The Karate Kid (2010) achieves self-actualization needs in an intercultural setting. Employing close-reading to analyze the text, the study uses Maslow’s (2013) hierarchy of needs and Rogers’ (1967) five characteristics of a fully functioning person as the theoretical frameworks. It also uses Bordwell, Thompson and Smith’s film form (2017) as a tool to analyze the cinematic aspects of the film. The current study finds that Dre Parker, the main character in the film, successfully achieves self-actualization after fulfilling the four preceding needs, which are physiological, safety and security, love and belongingness, and self-esteem. It is also found that he expresses self-actualization through the five characteristics of a fully functioning person: openness to experience, existential living, trust feelings, creativity, and fulfilled life. Furthermore, the study concludes that the main character’s young age and cultural background do not hinder him from reaching self-actualization. In fact, self-actualization contributes to unite disparate cultures to a certain extent.

Abstract

Liberal feminism is the branch of feminism that believes that men and women are equal. It holds that women can act on the same level as men. It has been a recurring issue in various literary works that features a main female character, especially in film. In addition, liberal feminism can be observed in TV series. A series that portrays a female character is The Crown. This research seeks to investigate what aspects of liberal feminism are represented by the character of Queen Elizabeth II in the first season of the series. This research employed qualitative design due to the descriptive nature of the research that explores a social phenomenon. The theory of liberal feminism by Rosemarie Tong (2018) was also utilized to help analyze and describe Queen Elizabeth II’s behavior which reflected the aspects of liberal feminism. The findings of this study revealed that Queen Elizabeth in this series displays action that falls under the three aspects of liberal feminism, equal education, liberty, and rights. This shows that liberal feminism can also manifests in the behavior of a prominent female historical figure.

Abstract

Researchers have analyzed the portrayal of characters with disabilities in children’s and adolescent literature. However, studies examining the portrayal of deaf character in children book is extremely limited, despite an increased inclusion of deaf characters in children’s literature over the past two decades (Golos Moses, 2011). The present study analyzes the portrayal of deaf character and the way meanings are constructed in children’s picture book entitled Dancing to the Beat (2021). The study employed a qualitative approach and was framed by theory of characterization (Reams, 2015). In addition, visual grammar (Kress and Leeuwen, 2006) and Cerrato’s (2012) meaning of colors are applied to analyze the visual text. The results indicate that the deaf character is portrayed through highlighting Deaf culture instead of medical impairment model. From fifteen pages analyzed, there are eleven pages which belong to Deaf culture and four pages to medical impairment. Thus, Deaf culture characteristics appeared more frequent than the medical impairment as it can be seen through her environment’s acceptance. The deaf character showed as a positive role model with self-confidence, optimism, enthusiasm and hard work through her behavior in facing her challenges. In addition, the book highlighted the importance of the role of adult and peer in deafness environment and inclusive education.

Abstract

This study analyzes the punctuation errors found in the three AUs titles belonging to one author on Twitter. Particularly, this study aims to determine what types of errors appear in the three AUs and what factors cause the errors. The data for this study were obtained from the author's Twitter account entitled Happy Birthday, Kai, Celebrity Crush, and Illustrious. Furthermore, the study used a qualitative case study design to identify the punctuation error found in AU on Twitter and the types of errors by using the theory of Burt, Dulay, Krashen (1982). Meanwhile, the factors of occurrence of errors were examined by using the theory of Brown (1994). The results revealed that the author made three types of errors: omission, addition, and misinformation. The most dominant type that appeared was omission 19 times. Then, these three types of errors arise due to 2 factors: the intralingual error factor and the context of learning factor. Nevertheless, these three AUs still have many readers and receive many likes. However, correct punctuation is considered necessary because it can affect the reader's understanding.

Abstract

Bullying is a pattern of negative behavior, not an occasional incident, which still occurs frequently in society. In most cases, bullying happens to children at school. As the issue has received much public attention, bullying is commonly featured in numerous literary works, one of which is in the children's film by Joe Cornish, The Kid Who Would Be King (2019). Through analysis under the framework of film theory by Bordwell and Thompson (2016) and Foucault's (1995) theoretical framework of power, the film portrayed bullying toward students in school through the film's cinematography, sound, and mise-en-scène. The imbalance of power between the bullies and the bullied is the main factor causing acts of bullying. It shows in the difference of individual aspects such as body sizes and social standings in school, which the bullies usually have the more advantageous aspect than the bullied. The advantageous aspect makes the bullies superior, giving them a chance to cause negative impacts on the bullied personalities intentionally. The negative impact of bullying can lower the bullied self-esteem, making them feel worthless as an individual. Since bullying is also a critical issue that needs to explore further, the researcher conducts a textual analysis study to provide references to readers about bullying in children's films and raise awareness about bullying against children in schools.

Abstract

The study examines the language phenomenon found in an American singer-songwriter’s album. Specifically, this study aims to analyze the interpersonal meaning used by Taylor Swift in Fearless (Taylor’s Version) Album. Regarding data source, three songs which represent a whole album, particularly Love Story, Hey Stephen, and White Horse were selected. Qualitative design was applied in this research to identify mood system and the use of modality in the selected song lyrics. In classifying the type of mood, a theory proposed by Strauss et al. (2018) was used. Meanwhile, the theory given by Halliday (2014) was employed to discover the modality in the song lyrics. It was also supported by some theories from Systemic Functional Language (SFL) scholars, such as Gerot and Wignell (1994) and Eggins (2004). The findings discover that the singer only uses three types of mood: declarative, interrogative, and imperative. Since declarative mood becomes the most dominant type, it can be concluded that the album mostly expresses the singer’s ideas. The singer also reveals her certainty by using different degrees of modality in statements that are found in declarative clauses. By determining the dominant mood and the degree of modality, the study result is expected to be useful for the listeners to increase their understanding of the meaning and context consisting of music albums.
