Abstract

This study examines the efficiency of zakat and infaq management in improving social welfare and poverty alleviation. The research employs a non-parametric approach using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) based on LAZISMU Central financial statements from 2018 to 2022. Input variables include total assets, zakat receipts, and infaq receipts, while the output variable is the distribution of zakat and infaq funds. The findings indicate that efficiency was achieved in 2020 and 2021, while inefficiencies occurred in 2018, 2019, and 2022. These results suggest the need for improved strategies in fund allocation to enhance distribution efficiency.

Abstract

Macroeconomic variables are closely related to financial conditions. During the 1997-1998 crisis, the achievement of the financial sector was tested through the depreciation of the rupiah exchange rate and the uncertainty of domestic economic growth. The 2008 crisis tested the achievements of the financial sector through the global financial crisis and in 2020 it was tested through the Covid-19 crisis. However, Islamic banking is relatively unaffected by some of these crises, this is because Islamic banking has a unique business model and Islamic banking is a productive intermediary institution compared to conventional banks. This study aims to examine macroeconomic variables such as domestic interest rates, inflation, exchange rates and foreign interest rates on Islamic bank financing. The study uses time-series data and multiple regression method. These findings highlight that stable monetary conditions, particularly interest rates and exchange rates, are essential for sustaining the performance of Islamic banking. The implication of the research is that maintaining exchange rate stability and price stability is the main agenda of the government in maintaining the growth of the financial sector, especially the Islamic financial sector.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the potential of cash waqf and the role of regulation in the development of cash waqf management in Indonesia, by highlighting the significant gap between its potential and actual realization. This study employs a qualitative approach using conceptual analysis and a literature review of regulations, implementation practices, and the dynamics of cash waqf development. The findings of this study indicate that although Indonesia has a very large potential for cash waqf, its realization remains low due to the limited institutional capacity of nazhir and low public literacy. In addition, existing regulations tend to be administrative in nature and have not fully encouraged the optimization of productive cash waqf management. Therefore, strengthening regulations oriented toward improving management, enhancing institutional capacity, and integrating with Islamic financial innovation is necessary so that cash waqf becomes more widely recognized and can develop optimally, contributing significantly to economic development and social welfare.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the phenomenon of differing institutional characteristics between Bank Syariah Indonesia (BSI), a result of a major merger, and Bank Muamalat Indonesia (BMI), the pioneer of pure Islamic banking. Although both banks operate under the same regulations, there is a debate regarding the extent to which asset scale influences the achievement of the substantive goals of Islamic law. The objective of this study is to evaluate and compare the Maqashid Sharia performance of BSI and BMI during the 2021–2024 period. The methodology employed is a descriptive comparative quantitative approach using the Maqashid Sharia Index (MSI) method, covering three primary dimensions: Tahdhib al-Fard (Education), Iqamah al-Adl (Justice), and Jalbi al-Mashlahah (Public Interest). The results indicate that BSI achieved a higher aggregate MSI score of 0.676 compared to BMI's score of 0.546. BSI consistently excels in the educational and macro-interest dimensions due to strong capital support, while BMI demonstrates better resilience in the justice dimension, particularly in customer profit-sharing distribution. The recommendation of this study is for BSI to increase its portion of profit-loss sharing financing to strengthen the justice dimension, while BMI is advised to accelerate digitalization and operational efficiency to enhance its social interest reach.

Abstract

This paper examines how Green Sukuk (GS) can finance infrastructure expansion and sustainable development in Pakistan’s renewable energy sector, with a focus on the role of ESG compliance. Using data from 233 managers, investors, and policymakers, the study applies structural equation modelling (SEM) to test relationships between GS, ESG, and sustainable infrastructure. The findings show that GS significantly supports renewable energy development and contributes to sustainability goals. However, its full potential is only realized when integrated with ESG frameworks. ESG compliance plays a strong mediating role by enhancing transparency, accountability, and alignment with global sustainability standards. The study highlights that combining GS with ESG can increase investor confidence, attract international funding, and accelerate Pakistan’s transition to clean energy. Overall, the paper proposes an integrated approach linking Islamic finance and ESG principles to effectively mobilize green capital and promote sustainable infrastructure in emerging economies.

Abstract

Profitability is fundamental parameter for evaluating the performance and sustainability of Islamic commercial banks. This study aims to analyze the impact of the BOPO, FDR and CAR on the NPM The research subjects include BSI, Bank Muamalat, BCA Syariah, and Bank Mega Syariah for the period 2022–2024. The research method employs a quantitative approach using the Panel Vector Autoregression (PVAR) because no variables found were found to be cointegrated in the cointegration test, based on secondary data from quarterly financial reports. Test results using Eviews 13 indicate in Panel VAR Estimates, the BOPO and CAR variables have no significant effect on NPM, while FDR has a significant positive effect on NPM. The findings of the Variance Decomposition confirm that the FDR is the primary determinant in explaining fluctuations in the NPM. This is proven by increasing progressively from the beginning of the period until the end of the period.

Abstract

The development of digital technology has driven the transformation of financial service systems, including in the Islamic banking sector through the use of mobile banking. However, the level of Islamic financial literacy and inclusion remains an important factor in determining the optimal use of these services. This study aims to analyse the level of Islamic financial literacy, the level of Islamic financial inclusion, and the level of Islamic mobile banking usage among teachers at State Madrasah Tsanawiyah in South Lampung Regency. This study uses a quantitative approach with descriptive analysis methods. The results of the study indicate that the level of Islamic financial literacy among teachers at State Madrasah Tsanawiyah in South Lampung reached 80.77% and was classified as good. The level of Islamic financial inclusion was also classified as very good, with a percentage of 81.61%, indicating that access to and utilisation of Islamic financial services has been running well. Meanwhile, the level of Islamic mobile banking usage reached 82.72% and was classified as very good, indicating that digital-based Islamic banking services have been used optimally by respondents. This study is expected to contribute academically to the development of Islamic economic studies and serve as a basis for consideration by educational institutions and policy makers in strengthening Islamic financial literacy and inclusion in a sustainable manner.

Abstract

Insrument for wealth redistribution and poverty alleviation. This study examines the role of zakat institutions in empowering widows and vulnerable women in Kaduna State, Nigeria. Using a mixed-method approach involving surveys and interviews, data were collected from 120 beneficiaries and key zakat administrators. The findings reveal that zakat significantly improves income levels, promotes small-scale entrepreneurship, and enhances social dignity among beneficiaries. However, challenges such as inadequate funding, weak institutional frameworks, and lack of transparency hinder optimal performance. The study recommends policy reforms, institutional strengthening, and integration with Islamic microfinance systems to maximize impact.

Abstract

Kano State, Nigeria’s largest Muslim-majority region, faces a paradox where substantial private wealth coexists with widespread extreme poverty. In 2003, the state government established the Zakat and Hubusi (Waqf) Commission to mobilize Islamic philanthropic resources for poverty alleviation. However, despite more than two decades of operation, the Commission collects less than 5% of the estimated zakat potential, while poverty levels remain high. This study argues that the problem stems from a lack of institutional trust rather than religious reluctance among zakat payers. Drawing on agency theory and the Islamic concept of amanah (trustworthiness), the research examines how mosque committees and community-based organizations serve as trusted alternatives to formal institutions. Using a sequential mixed-methods approach involving surveys and interviews, the findings show that perceived corruption, political interference, and weak accountability significantly reduce public confidence in the Commission. The study highlights the importance of strengthening transparency, governance, and accountability to improve zakat management and enhance the effectiveness of Islamic social finance in poverty reduction.

Abstract

This paper examines Islamic philanthropy (al-tabarru’at) as a public welfare instrument through the theoretical lens of Maqasid al-Shari’ah – the higher objectives of Islamic law. Arguing that philanthropy is not merely a moral virtue but a structural mechanism embedded in the Islamic legal order, the study demonstrates how the classical Maqasid framework – comprising the protection of religion (din), life (nafs), intellect (‘aql), lineage (nasl), and wealth (mal) – provides a coherent theoretical foundation for understanding, classifying, and expanding philanthropic institutions in the Islamic public domain. Drawing on classical juristic sources including al-Ghazali, al-Shatibi, Ibn Ashur, and al-’Izz ibn ‘Abd al-Salam, the paper argues that philanthropy serves as a collective obligation (fard kifayah) that preserves societal maslahah (public interest) at all three levels: daruriyyat (necessities), hajiyyat (needs), and tahsiniyyat (refinements). The paper further contends that a Maqasid-based framework offers a systematic methodology for evaluating, prioritising, and institutionalising philanthropic activity in the contemporary Muslim public sphere.
