Abstract

Water hyacinth contains antioxidants such as lignin, tannins, saponins, and alkaloids that can bind to metals to form a protective layer as an organic inhibitor in the corrosion proses. The purpose of this study was to determine the content of antioxidants in water hyacinth extract which can reduce the corrosion rate of metals. The maceration process was carried out with a feed: methanol ratio of 1:9 (w/v). The types of antioxidant compounds were tested using the phytochemical method while the antioxidant activity was tested using the FRAP method. Steel corrosion testing uses the coupon method with a corrosion time of 5 days in air, rainwater, and tap water. The yield of the extract was 72.80%. Based on the results of the phytochemical and FRAP tests, the positive extract contained antioxidant compounds, namely alkaloids, tannins and saponins with an antioxidant concentration of 296.55 ppm. Organic inhibitors that showed the highest inhibition efficiency were at a concentration of 75 ppm with a value of 94.52% in tap water media, 65.53% in air media, and 52.96% in rainwater media.

Abstract

Solar cells using dyes as sensitizers continue to expand. The synthetic dye used as a sensitizing material for solar cells has high production costs, difficult to find, and can cause environmental pollution. Photosynthetic pigments as sensitizers are considered to be the solution to this matter. In this research, we investigated the effect of photosynthetic pigments from the Navicula sp. TAD as a dye-sensitized material on the efficiency of dyesensitized solar cell. To obtain high biomass, the Navicula sp. TAD was cultivated in a modified medium. Navicula sp. TAD has photosynthetic pigments consisting of chlorophyll and carotenoid. Solar cells using a crude pigment extract with a concentration of 300 ppm absorbed by TiO2 as an electrode have efficiency values of 4.475×10-4%.

Abstract

Textile industry wastewater contains organic and inorganic pollutants which could be indicated byrelatively high levels of COD, BOD5, turbidity. If this waste water was directly discharged into the environment, it would pollute the environment and endanger human health and other living things. Textile industry wastewater treatment with electrocoagulation method aimed to replace or save chemicals as coagulants and flocculants that could cause environmental pollution and the price continues to increase. Wastewater treatment with this method could produce wastewater or treatment effluent with levels of COD, turbidity, heavy metals, pH below or at least equal to the environmental quality standard (BML) Research results on textile wastewater treatment using Fe and Al and SS (Stainless) electrodes Steel) at a current density of 0.25 to 1.25 A/dm2 with a processing time of 35 minutes obtained COD levels with a process efficiency greater than 80% and turbidity levels with greater efficiency 90%.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus can trigger infections, one of which is candidiasis caused by Candida albicans.Candidiasis treatment with antibiotics can cause resistance, so it is necessary to use alternative naturalingredients that function as antifungals, one of which is manila sapodilla (Manilkara zapota). The peel ofthe manila sapodilla fruit has not been widely used, so it is necessary to utilize the waste of the manilasapodilla fruit peel. The aim of the study was to determine the antifungal activity of the extract of the manila sapodilla fruit peel against Candida albicans. Extracts were made using maceration method with 70% ethanol as solvent. Manila sapodilla peel extract was screened for phytochemical compounds of secondary metabolites, and antifungal activity was tested by well diffusion method. Manila sapodilla fruit peel extract contains flavonoids, alkaloids, and tannins. Antifungal testing of the peel of the sapodilla manila fruit at extract concentrations of 30%, 40%, 50% and 60% respectively resulted in an average inhibition zone diameter of 3.827 ± 0.947 mm; 5.460 ± 0.337 mm; 6.673 ± 0.351 mm; 8.053 ± 0.720 mm. Manila sapodilla fruit peel extract has antifungal activity against Candida albicans.

Abstract

Aluminum is a metal for equipment materials in industry because it has superior properties such as being strong, light, and easy to shape, but is easily deformed and has low hardness and wear resistance. To improve the physical and mechanical properties of aluminum can be done through the anodising process. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the type of electrolyte on the anodising process on the efficiency of the process and product thickness of the oxide layer and the mechanical properties (hardness) of the aluminum surface. The aluminum anodissing process was carried out in various types of electrolytes (sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, oxalic acid, chromic acid,) with a concentration of 15%. The anodising process temperature was kept constant at 25 ⁰C with a processing time of 20 minutes, and a voltage of 18 v. The results showed that the anodising process in sulfuric acid solution had the highest efficiency of 51.98% than the other three electrolytes, and produced the highest oxide layer thickness of 13.88 m and aluminum surface hardness of 287.9 HV, in phosphoric acid solution.
