Abstract

Research findings show that in general Indonesian students' reading ability is stilllow. This is attributable to, among others, poor reading habit, which is caused by lowreading motivation. Several aspects cause low reading motivation: (1) family andneighborhood environments that do not support reading habit, (2) society's low bookbuyingpower, (3) limited number of good libraries, (4) negative effects of electronic mediadevelopment, (5) learning model that in general does not make students read, and (6)inappropriate learning system for reading. To improve reading motivation several attemptscan be made: (1) making children get used to reading since their early age, (2) providinginteresting books, (3) creating an environment conducive for reading, (4) reconstructingthe library performance to make it interesting, and (5) developing a learning model forreading that is enjoyable, varied, and educative. Keywords: reading motivation, literate society

Abstract

The study aims at developing a valid and reliable test to measure students' Englishpronunciation mastery. To meet the objective, two kinds of instruments were developed, namely recognition and production tests. The instruments were tried out to students fromthree pronunciation classes, and the results were then analyzed through validity andreliability tests and an item analysis. Statistical analyses showed that the instruments wereunsatisfactory and needed revisions. After some revisions and try-outs, the revisedinstruments proved to be valid and reliable with reliability coefficients of 0.940 for theproduction test and 0.889 for the recognition test, and difficulty indices of 0.538(moderate) and 0.546 (moderate) respectively. Keywords: pronunciation, validity, reliability, difficulty indices

Facing continuous global changes, the Indonesian government views that acentralized curriculum is incapable of accommodating the development of knowledge andcommunity needs in the local, national, and global levels. A competence-based curriculumis constructed with an expectation that in the national education system graduates havecompetitive and comparative advantages. The Indonesian Language subject equipsstudents with awareness that the language is the national identity that unifies Indonesianpeople as a nation and simultaneously the subject develops their linguistic andcommunicative competence. Abstract

In Indonesia, switching from one language to another language is a commonphenomenon because Indonesian speakers are bilinguals. They use two or morelanguages, for example, Indonesian, English, or/and their own local language in a seriesof communication practices. With regard to the study of codeswitching, three perspectivescan be used. They include pragmatic, sociolinguistic, and linguistic analyses. Of the threeperspectives, analyzing codeswitching from a linguistic perspective seems to be interestingand challenging as the analysis gives an emphasis on the internal structure of thecodeswitching itself. This article deals with code switching from English to Indonesian orvice-versa analyzed from grammatical aspects as part of the linguistic analysis. It aims atreviewing the grammatical rules underlying the code-swictching.Keywords: code-switching, grammatical analysis

Abstract

Good print media are those prioritizing the writing quality. Although theyemphasize more on effectiveness, efficiency, and cost, they should take intoaccount of the writing quality, without violating the Indonesian language rules. Some violations found in journalistic writing include: (1) spelling and punctuationviolations, (2) grammatical violations, consisting of errors in syllable separation, morphological violations, and syntactic errors, (3) semantic violations, and (4)discourse violations. Other problems concern loanwords, namely foreign wordsthat are already popular in the community. The replacement of foreign wordsabsorbed into the Indonesian language with unavailable Indonesian equivalentsresults in difficulty. Keywords: journalistic language, mass media, language maintenance
