Abstract

This writing will analyze views belonging to Fazlur Rahman in theological issues from different angle. In majority, theological discourses developed by the ancient theologists were concentrated into matters of god and godhood, and this results theological discourses becoming verily theocentrist. As the result, this creates formulas and arguments which are complicated and cannot be perceived by common people. For that, Fazlur Rahman reconstructed the previous theological concepts by relating to Islamic theological basics and practical values in life, and he also advanced moral aspect belonging to human race; so theology is no longer theocentrist but anthropocentrist. Through this Rahman’s effort, theology then becomes more relevant with nowadays context and is easily understood by common people. In this context, Rahman analyzes three main theological questions: revelation and prophethood, free will and predestination, and escathology.

Abstract

Relation between religion and state is an ultimate theme in the philosophy of Islamic politic. The theme has colored whole eminent Islamic philosophers, since al-Fārābī until Khomeini, and has given various concepts from Al-Madīna al-Fādila written by al-Fārābī to Khomeini’s Wilāya al-Faqīh. Actually, there are three views in the Islamic political philosophy. First, a secular concept, in which it has existed and found its reference after the Prophet’s era. Second, the concept undertakes religion in a limited way, in which the religion is adopted for morality corridor, and is used just to maintain the politic running within the moral ways. Third, integrality between religion and state, in which this becomes the very discussion in this article. The last thesis is proposed by Khomeini, who uses a terminology wilāya al-faqīh admitted by Iranian people through referendum 1979. By tracing the history of Islamic political philosophy, this writing will examine the concept of wilāya al-faqīh, from its conceptions till its implementation in the Republic of Iran.

Abstract

One of the many important matters that is referred in the Qur’ān is a matter of the universe. The verses of Qur’ān invite people to observe and reflect on the creation of the universe, because in it there are signs of God’s existence and power. Cosmology is the theory about the origin of the universe. In Islam, this theory is one of the essential issues that have deep theological concequences and implications to the tawhīd. In order to formulate the process of the universe creation, the perspective of the Muslims was sorting into two extreme groups: traditionalists and rationalists. In the Islamic philosophy, in terms of the creation, the cosmology of al-Fārābī and Ibn Sīnā was influenced by the emanation of Plotinus’ philosophy and in terms of the structure is based on the concept of a geocentric Ptolomeus. While al-Ghazālī’s cosmology (representative of the traditionalist) based on the principle of the absolute will of God which is absolute. This study wants to reveal about the cosmology in the Islamic philosophers perspective as one of the cosmological mainstream which is speculative and revives the school of Aristotle, but not contrary to the principles of al-Qur’ān.
