Abstract

Violence in the name of God—terrorism attacks, violence toward minority even inter religious conflicts—has nowadays become a global issue. In Indonesia, there are at least 30 cases of “holy” violence committed in the last ten years. The demand to have such freedoms, as of expression, of speech, of getting access to information, could be seen as a process of an ongoing democracy. Internet, in this context, is one of the popular media to channel this ambitions of democracy. On the other hand, many Muslim extremists use this change and this media to channel the ideology of jihad. This article aims to shed light on how the Indonesia netizen’s (cyber community) response to those kind of radical Islamist messages. By using descriptive content analysis to the comments of the respective issue in Kaskus website, this paper sees the variety of the responses that would contribute to the prevention of violence in the name of religion and suggest some solutions.

Abstract

This article discusses two faces of Islam, political and cultural, which have developed throughout the Muslim world, including in Indonesia. It argues that political Islam has two faces and both of which, although represented by two different groups, have the same agendas, i.e., the application by the state of shari’a, and also the establishment of Islamic state. Arguing that political Islam has brought about radicalism, the article proposes that the other face of Islam, that is cultural Islam, should be maintained and empowered.

Abstract

This paper attempts to examine to what extent the verdict of the Indonesian Mahkamah Konstitusi on the judicial review about the Law No. 1/PNPS/1965 on the eradication of blashphemy and defamation on religion has given perspective on the religious freedom and defamation of religion. It argues that the term ‘penodaan agama’ defined in the Indonesian Criminal Law is vague and has not clarified such relevant concepts as blashphemy, defamation of religion, and hatred speech. In fact, these three concepts are interchangeablely and chaotically used in this law. It also concludes that the Mahkamah Konstitusi has failed to take ‘middle way’ as to bridge and accommodate  several interests retained in this legal attempt of judicial review and the Mahkamah Konstitusi takes not only constitutional but also political issues for its legal considerations, demonstrating that MK has obliviously revived the political ideology of ‘Piagam Jakarta’.

Abstract

This article examines the preferences of the Nasyiatul Aisyiyah philanthropy that encourage the development of women empowerment. The Nasyiatul Aisyiyah is a female voluntary- and Islamic-based- organization, which was under the auspice of the Aisyiyah until 1965 when Muhammadiyah granted their autonomy. Since its first establishment, the Nasyiah has devoted itself to the development of philanthropy. In this article, I contend that the Nasyiah philanthropy has experienced up and down situation, although the Nasyiah philanthropy has developed significantly in its efforts to empower women in the community. The I find that the preferences of the Nasyiah philantrophy consist of self-actualization, women empowerment, social entrepreneurship, and social welfare.

Abstract

This essay attempts to discuss religious violence against Ahmadiyah adherents as the minority group, in term of religion, in Indonesia. This essay demonstrates and argues that the main factor of the rise of the violence is the failure and absence of the state in enforcing the politics of liberal multiculturalism as to govern the social plurality and diversity. It stresses that the state rather tends to establish the politics of conformity and make racial policy against minority. As a result, the agenda of universal protection toward rights of minorities is hardly realized.
