Abstract

In recent years, the study of the influence of religion on the economy is rising. However, in Indonesian context there is limited number of literature that specifically explores the relationship between religion and economic. To fill this gap, this article aims to investigate the effect of religion –with religious institutions as proxies- on economic growth using panel data from 2010 to 2017 of selected provinces. This model based on the Cobb-Douglas model and estimated using fixed-effects. The result shows that economic growth positive significantly affected by Protestant and Hindu variables. On other side, there in no strong evidence that Islam and Catholic have siginificant impact on economic growth. This paper does not claim that one religion is better than others in terms of economic activity, as measured by economic growth, but rather on how the role of religious institutions on social networks encourage economic growth. An important point of this paper is that in Indonesian context, religion has significant influences on the economic growth as in many other countries. Keywords: Religion, economic growth, Indonesia, fixed-effects

Abstract

Western epistemology was greatly influenced by Greek philosophical ideas. In the course of history, Epistemology has been dominated by patterns of thought that are rational, secular and free from religious values and beliefs. History shows that the Western Epistemology turned into a large school that became dominant: in the form of rationalism, empiricism, criticism, and intuition. Although it has various methods and approaches to acquire knowledge, in principle the building and its foundation have the same way of thinking that comes from a philosophy that upholds the mind and also relies on human sensory abilities. The West denies revelation as a source of knowledge and for Islam, revelation is the highest source of knowledge. Authentic revelation is the Qur'an and Hadith. The result of this paper shows Western epistemology has a foundation and roots that are based on philosophical thinking that is far from the touch of religious values. Western epistemology in its manifestations is then limited to the acquisition of knowledge about the visible world such as sensory nature and not touching on other realms. Western epistemology focuses more on reason and senses as the main source of science, dichotomization, anthropocentrism, opposition to the spiritual dimension, relentless uncertainty, secularization, desacralization, and empiricism. While tthe Islamic epistemology views both sensory and metaphysical objects and recognizes the three sources of knowledge at once namely senses, reason, intuition. Each of these sources has different levels of ability so they cannot be separated and must be used proportionally. The object of knowledge in Islam is not only empirical, but also metaphysical. The source of knowledge in Islam is also different from Western epistemology. If the West only recognizes the senses and ratios, then in the Muslim view, knowledge comes from God obtained through: the senses are healthy, khabar sadiq, and intuition.

This research aims to reveal what Muhammadiyah has done and is currently doing to overcome Covid-19 and the extent of its impact on the wider community. For this purpose, the descriptive-analysis method is employed in its writing. Among the findings of this study is that one of the most consistent Islamic philanthropic organizations since its establishment in Indonesia is Muhammadiyah. In the Covid-19 issue, Muhammadiyah has contributed a lot and continues to take a significant role in overcoming it. Among other things, Muhammadiyah has formed the Muhammadiyah Covid-19 Command Center (MCCC), which is a special team formed to handle Covid-19. This team has been working since it was founded and continues to work on this case. The results of the work included assistance in the field of health that is needed such as providing hospitals, doctors, medical personnel, and medicine. Assistance in the field of education such as making educational media, subsidizing credit for students, and discounting student study fees. And assistance in the social sector such as cash assistance, distribution of groceries, and the provision of free sahur (food before fasting) and takjil (food for breaking fasting) in Ramadhan 1441H. Besides, through the Tarjih and Tajdid Assembly, Muhammadiyah has provided religious guidance for its members during this pandemic so that they are not confused about practicing worship. Abstract

Teaching Islamic Studies in the Age of ISIS, Islamophobia, and the Internet is a collection of articles by contributors who have been teaching classes about Muslims and Islam especially in the Western contexts. This book is edited by Courtney M. Dorroll, an Assistant Professor of Middle Eastern and North African Studies at Wofford College in South Carolina. As an academic at a small college, the editor is alert to the challenges presenting advices on how to teach this important but sensitive issue of Islam to new academics and students in the communities. In the age of misrepresentations and stereotypes of Islam, this book is considered important to teachers and students as a means to encourage them to thoughtfully engage with the topic of Islam. The original idea of Teaching Islamic Studies in the Age of ISIS, Islamophobia, and the Internet is initiated from a talk given by Richard C. Martin, a Professor Emeritus of Religion at Emory University. He gave a talk at Wofford College under an invitation from the editor of this book, Courtney M. Dorroll. Professor Martin has written and edited several books including Defenders of Reason in Islam: Mutazilism from Medieval School to Modern Symbol and Rethinking Islamic Studies: From Orientalism to Cosmopolitanism. In this book, the contributors especially shared their personal struggles and address the challenges of teaching about Islamic religion while the media mostly promote Islamophobia and violence. They proposed some approaches to Islamic studies pedagogy and provided some suggestions to better structure the course. These approaches and suggestions are based on their own experiences facing the students and parents who might initially fear the topic related to Muslims and Islam. In order to encourage a deeper engagement in this course, the contributors include collaborative teaching models by doing reading and media suggestions. This approach will result in a broader thinking of students on this subject. It can be said that by reading this particular book, students are exposed to challenging ideas of Islamophobia and encouraged to confront these ideas fairly and objectively. More importantly, this book provides a fair and open discussion of an important issue in teaching about Islam.

Abstract

This article examines the preacher's professionalism in the dynamics of social change in the Dumai Muballigh (Muslim Preacher)Association (PMD). The development of information technology is one of the causes of social changes that occur and currently shows the complexity of the problems faced by the people and preachers. Da'wah as a call, invitation, and appeal is expected to be transformed to be relevant to any changes that occur. This requires professional preachers to be able to become agents of change. In preaching, the development of preaching resources is emphasized on various aspects such as material, mental, skills, knowledge, and psychic. The results showed that the effort to create professional preachers in the PMD is doing human resource development through muzakarah and preaching guidance to strengthen science and skills, training and use of IT (Information Technology) as a form of transformation, conducting preaching certification as an effort to assess and qualify the quality of preachers' abilities, improving education levels through further education cooperation agreements among preachers and companies, universities and government, and the development of contemporary preaching material through the study of books, and hadith.
