Abstract

Morphological process in English language may occur inflectionally or derivationally. The main difference between inflection and derivation is that inflection does not make a new lexeme but a grammatical word with respect to syntactic rules; however, derivation makes a new lexeme which is lexically different from its base. In English language, derivation may occur through prefixation, suffixation, conversion, and compounding besides other morphological processes such as back formation, reduplication, clipping, acronym, and blending.   Keywords:derivation, inflection, lexical word, grammatical word, morphological processes

Abstract

It is not an easy task for language students to write creatively. The students usually have insufficient knowledge of what they have to write. In respond to this gap this paper shows how genre and inter-textuality- based approach was implemented to develop the students’ creative writing ability through a series of writing assignment. The research participants included 20 students taking ‘Advanced Genre-Based writing” course in 2010/2011 academic year. The data were obtained from the students’ writings and classroom observations. The finding showed that teaching writing using genre and intertextuality approach could enhance the students’ creative writing. This evidence could be identified through students’ improvements in their  writings’ assignments. Another finding revealed that the approach could enhance the students’ motivation to express themselves through pieces of  writings. Based on the findings, the presenters argue that the introduction of genre and inter-textuality to creative writing programs is an important issue that writing teachers should take into account. Keywords: creative writing, genre, intertextuality, students’writings, students’ motivation

Abstract

The Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) approach, specifically the textual metafunction, has been tried to be applied in teaching writing to English as a Foreign Language. SFL is chosen as an alternative application in language teaching since linguistics is the study of language that seeks how language works. Traditionally textual metafunction has often been neglected in language teaching, where sentences have been created, manipulated, and assessed in isolation. In EFL writing classroom, we find that learners often write paragraphs that consist of sentences which do not seem to connect together into cohesive devices. Thinking of this, I started to seek an alternative approach to help the students improve their writings, that is how to develop ideas so that the texts the students produce will run “smoothly” and “hang together” logically. It means that the sentences in their writings are well organized and developed coherently. Besides, the ideas will not jump from one idea to other ideas.  This paper attempts to depict how to apply textual metafunction in EFL writing and how thematic patterns, which involves the relationship between clauses based on the information contained in themes and rhemes, can achieve cohesion in EFL learners’ text. It is assumed that the thematic patterns specify its usefulness as a discourse tool for adding students in writing their paragraph into cohesive text. The result shows that thematic patterns is one way of achieving cohesion in text since it involves connecting sentences together in a way which moves the text from the Given to the New. In short, the thematic pattern of texts is needed to analyze their own text to check for thematic flow in order to get a good cohesive text. Keyword: Cohesive text, EFL, SFL, Thematic Patterns

Abstract

This paper entitled A Comparison of the Narrative Perspective between Novel and Film is the result of a research which is done by comparing a plot of the story in “The Kite Runner” novel with the film. The objective of this research is to find out the differences between plot from the text and  the film in the narrative perspective. The method used is library research method. This is a method which is done to find out references by reading the novel, some books or references dealing with the object of analysis. Beside that, the data collection is also done by comparing the sequence of plot in the novel and  the film.    The result of this research shows that most of the narrative perspective from the novel and the film are the same. The simillarites are especially on the part of narrative structure. They are divided into exposition, compilation, climax and resolution. However, there are some differences on the way how this story resolves the tension. The resolution in the novel is rather different from the one in the film. Besides that the way how this novel present the psychological description of Amir as the main character is also different. The novel presents the psychological of the main character deeply, meanwhile it doesn’t appear in the film. Finally over all, between the novel and the film, they still have many similarities. Abstract

Literature is one of the ways to understand the world and brings people to world of ideas and imaginations. The world that is believed could never happen in this world before. Sastrowardoyo says that novel does not give worth formula for intellect, but it suggests many possibilities on moral, social and psychology. Fiction stories encourage the ability to think, to dream, to bring our minds to all kinds of situation, and to create imaginative experiences. Besides, Tarigan says that in fiction stories there is a possibility of reality because one of many tasks of a writer is to create imaginative characters and to make them live in his stories. Life does not always run smoothly. Sometimes we face a condition that forces us to choose. Occasionally the choices we have do not suit our desire. We must sacrifice something to make our dream comes true. Sacrifice is needed to pursue our desires as in Samruam Singh’s Daughter for Sale. In Samruam Singh’s Daughter for Sale, the main character is Lung Maa. Lung Maa faces a very difficult situation. He needs money to pay the hospital where his wife is hospitalized. His garden does not produce much. His garden’s little production is only enough to pay his debt that already is mountainous. Thus Lung Maa chooses to sacrifice his daughter.
