Abstract

Morphological process in English language may occur inflectionally or derivationally. The main difference between inflection and derivation is that inflection does not make a new lexeme but a grammatical word with respect to syntactic rules; however, derivation makes a new lexeme which is lexically different from its base. In English language, derivation may occur through prefixation, suffixation, conversion, and compounding besides other morphological processes such as back formation, reduplication, clipping, acronym, and blending.   Keywords:derivation, inflection, lexical word, grammatical word, morphological processes

Abstract

This spoken discourse analysis adopted the model of casual conversation analysis as suggested by Eggins and Slade (1997).The corpus of data of this study was a taped English casualconversation between a non-native speaker (NNS) and a native speaker (NS). The transcribed conversation was analyzed to know the mood patterns and the speech function patterns of the interactants. The mood patterns were studied from the types of clause structures chosen by the interactants, while the speech function patterns were studied through the choice of speech functions when the interactants acted on each other. The interpersonal relationships between the interactants wereinterpreted from the synoptic quantification of the mood and speech function patterns. The study revealed that NNS was the dominant interactant and played his role as initiator, while NS is the marginal interactant and played her role as supporter; the conversation was the one of information negotiation rather than goods and services negotiation signed by the dominant production of declaratives by both NNS and NS; and NNS favoured on negotiating opinion information, while NS prefered factual information negotiation.. It is suggested that casual conversation needs to be considered in designing syllabus to complement the current practices of conversation which focus on pragmatic conversation; authentic text, such as casual conversation, needs to be used in language classroom to avoid genre shock in students’ daily activities; and speech functions and their lexicogrammatical realizations need to be introduced to students to enrich them with possible moves in sustaining a conversation.Key words: English interaction , interpersonal meaning, representation

Abstract

This study aims at describing the enactment of role relationships between English non-native speakers in an English dialogue. The speakers are an Indonesian student and a Dutchman who met by accident in a public place in Semarang. The dialogue was analyzed by describing the clause and speech function productions by the speakers. The result of the study shows that in an equal turn right to talk the Dutchman performs as the dominant speaker, while the Indonesian Student as the marginal one. The Indonesian student plays the role of interaction stirrer by dominating the opening speech functions with questions. On the other hand, the Dutchman plays the role of interaction supporter by dominating the continuing and responding speech functions. The lack of confrontational speech functions by the speakers in this dialogue is probably caused by the low contact between them, since it is their first time of face-to-face meeting.Key words: role relationship, speech function, dominant speaker, marginal speaker

Abstract

The development of pragmatic linguistics cannot be separated from the development of analytic philosophical tradition which focuses on ordinary language. Analytic philosophy falls into three main branches: logical atomism, logical positivism, and ordinary language philosophy. According to the philosophy of logical atomism, a reality is expressed in language propositions, not ideas. A proposition is everything which can be verified to be true or false. Meanwhile, logical positivism philosophy is characterised by positive evaluation of knowledge and scientific method. Unlike logical atomism and logical positivism, ordinary language philosophy does not base on language logic, but on the ordinary language which human beings use in their daily activities. In thisordinary language philosophy, language is studied from both structural and functional aspects. Language is studied from its fundamental function in daily life. This idea of language philosophy inspired the development of pragmatic linguistics. Some language philosophers, such as Austin, Searl, and Grice, initiated the development of pragmatic linguistics through their ideas on speechacts and cooperative principle. Keywords: logical atomism, logical positivism, ordinary language philosophy, pragmatic linguistics

Abstract

This study aims at describing the lexicogrammatical realizations of logical meaning in the agreement text on common effective preferential tariff (CEPT) scheme for the Asean free trade area. The text under study was taken from http://asean.org/asean-economic-community/asean-free-trade-area-afta-council/agreements-declarations/. The logical meaning in this study refers to the grammatical and semantic unit formed when two or more clauses are linked together in certain systematic and meaningful ways under the theoretical framework of clause complex in systemic functional linguistics (SFL). The text was analyzed by identifying the boundaries of all clause complexes that made the text. The analysis emphasized on finding the types and the meanings of logical connection between clauses in the clause complexes. The findings show that the sentences in the agreement text under study use clause complexes (54%) more than clause simplexes (46%), showing the complexity of its sentence structure. This complexity is also supported by the fact that most of the clause simplexes use embedded clauses (63%) to give more meanings into the clause simplexes. In terms of interdependency relationship between clauses in clause complexes, the text uses significantly more hypotaxis (81%) than parataxis (19%). Keywords: Asean free trade area, common effective preferential tariff (CEPT) scheme, logical meaning, clause complex, hypotaxis, parataxis

Abstract

This study focuses on identifying the problems faced by visually impaired students in teaching-learning  process of English syntax course at Faculty of Humanities, Dian Nuswantoro University in 2014. English syntax, as one of the subjects studied in the English study program, is considered as a challenging subject for visually impaired students as it involves visual perception, such as graphics and images. This research was a descriptive qualitative one. The researchers collected the data by using an in-depth interview. This involved 2 visually impaired students who experienced the learning process of English syntax and 3 lecturers of Dian Nuswantoro University. The discussion was limited on the issues around the needs for creating an accessible learning media and kinds of difficulties faced by the visually impaired students. From the in-depth interview, there are three major findings that are highlighted: a) the needs to overcome all inaccessible English syntax learning materials; b) general difficulties faced by visually impaired students in English syntax subject; c) technical difficulties in drawing tree structure diagrams. Then, these highlighted problems and findings are used as to formulate the recommendations of this study.

Abstract

This paper aims at construing the ways two spakers of a casual conversation who are culturally different realize their commitments towards the truth of their exchanges in the conversation. The corpus of data of this study was a stretch of approximately fifty-five-minute taped-English-conversation between a native speaker (an American female) and a non-native speaker (an Indonesian male). The data were analyzed by referring to Basic System of Modality as suggested by Matthiessen (1995) in systemic functional linguistics tradition. The study reveals that NNS was more unsure towards the truth of the propositions he exchanged in the conversation compared to NS. In modalizing his propositions, NNS preferred using subjective orientation compared to NS who preferred judging something on behalf of others. Keywords: modality, modalization, modulation, systemic functional linguistics
