Abstract

Islamic issues have always been intriguing topics to discuss, especially in the Western world, where Islam is a minority religion. It is more prominent and becomes the center of public attention when a person of political power delivers the issue. For such a reason, this paper seeks to analyze Biden's speech when hosting a reception of the Eid Al-Fitr celebration in the east room of the White House in Washington, DC, on May 2, 2022. His speech is examined through Searles illocutionary speech act and Kerafs language styles theory. A qualitative approach was applied in this study. The present study finds that according to Searles theory, Bidens speech was mostly assertive. It was because he wanted to assert Eid Al-Fitr as a sign of the end of Ramadan as well as to appreciate Muslim Americans contributions to the state. Furthermore, Biden utilizes five classifications of language styles: climax, anticlimax, parallelism, antithesis, and repetition (epizeuxis, anaphora, and anadiplosis). Consequently, by employing various language styles to emphasize important messages, Biden's speech can positively influence Muslim American citizens.

Abstract

This study explores students' attitudes towards GT, the impact of GT on their language use in writing, and the benefits and drawbacks associated with its uses. The research design employed a qualitative approach to gather data through writing tasks and questionnaires. The findings indicate that the use of GT did not significantly degrade the quality of language use in students' writing. The occurrence of spelling, word choice, and grammatical mistakes was minimal, demonstrating that GT had a positive impact on language acquisition and writing skills. Moreover, students showed positive attitudes towards GT, considering it beneficial for their writing and preferring it over other translation apps. The benefits of GT in writing included vocabulary expansion, time-saving, and increased confidence, while drawbacks included potential grammatical errors, incorrect translations, and dependency on the tool. Educators are recommended to promote responsible GT use and provide error corrective advice. More research on effective GT integration in writing lessons is recommended.

Abstract

The rapid advancement of AI technologies, particularly ChatGPT, is reshaping the educational landscape. Understanding how students perceive these technologies is crucial for their effective integration into academic environments. This study aims to investigate students' perceptions of ChatGPT's role in supporting academic tasks, such as learning, research, and assignments at the University of Bengkulu. A descriptive survey design was employed, utilizing structured questionnaires based on the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). Responses from 75 students across various faculties were analyzed using descriptive statistics and ANOVA to explore perceptions regarding ChatGPTs usefulness, ease of use, and ethical considerations. The results indicate that students view ChatGPT as moderately useful, particularly for saving time on assignments and research tasks. However, there are ethical concerns, notably about plagiarism, and a demand for better training on the ethical use of AI. ChatGPT is perceived as a valuable tool in enhancing academic efficiency, but there is a need for comprehensive training to address ethical challenges in its use.

Abstract

Many parents in the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) context such as Indonesia might have held to the belief of the golden age for learning language, as evidenced by the proliferation of the so-called international preschools in which subjects are taught in English or Chinese. In the realm of language acquisition, this the younger the better belief is still debatable among the scholars in the field, with some demonstrating the success of childrens early exposure to foreign languages and others who dismissed it as a myth. Thus, this brief article set out to view the debate under the lens of philosophy, particularly that of Poppers pseudoscience perspective in order to decide whether early childhood bilingualism is pseudoscientific or an evidence-based practice. The article concludes that it might be too early to call early childhood bilingualism a myth, and proposes practical recommendations for parents with young children.
