Abstract

This research aims to determine the relationship between the teaching style of English teachers and the motivation of students majoring in science to learn English and to find out what teaching style is preferred by students in learning English. This research used the correlation method with a quantitative design, and the population is class X SMAN 7 Bengkulu City. The technique used was random sampling, where the researcher chose 33 students as a sample. Data collection was carried out through a questionnaire with total of 20 questions regarding the teaching style of English teachers and 20 more questions related to student’s learning motivation. The scale used for data was analyzed using a Likert Scale. Based on the results of research from data analysis, researchers found that the teacher's teaching style that students were most interested in was the expert style, which received a high score of 17%, choosing to strongly agree. Moreover, the findings show Pearson correlation results that there is a significant correlation between the teacher's teaching style and students' motivation in learning English, as explained the significant value is 0.572. The researcher concluded that there was a significant relationship between the teacher's teaching style and the motivation of students majoring in natural science to learn English in class X SMAN 7 Bengkulu City.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to identify the relationship between students' writing abilities and their vocabulary knowledge. The method of this research is quantitative using two instruments: a 30-item multiple choice vocabulary test and a writing competency test using descriptive paragraphs. To analyze it, the Pearson Product Moment Correlation Formula is used to identify it. The research sample consisted of 36 middle schools students at 8 grade. The results of research regarding the relationship between vocabulary mastery and writing ability of middle schools students in science class show that there is a low relationship and show that the research hypothesis is proven. Based on this research, students should learn and use their vocabulary skills more to become a good writer.

Abstract

This research aims to determine if there is a correlation between learning environment and students' critical thinking skill development. Research method that is used is Correlation. The sample in this research is 25 university students of the English Education Department. Instruments used in this research were questionnaires and practice tests. The questionnaire sheet adapted from The Dundee Ready Education Environment Measure (DREEM). it is used to find out students' opinions about their learning environment. Other instrument that is used is the practice test of Critical Thinking Appraisal which was used to determine the level of students’ critical thinking ability. In analyzing the data, this research used the product-moment correlation analysis technique. The results shows that there are no correlations between learning environment and the development of students’ critical thinking skills. Building a good learning environment is important and can support a good learning process.

Abstract

For pupils to acquire English, listening skill is a key component. TED Talks have emerged as a useful resource for teaching students the importance of being able to listen. The aim of this research is to distinguish students’ perceptions of Using TED Talks on listening comprehension in English Language Teaching at The English Education Study Program of Bengkulu University. The research design was descriptive quantitative research which involved 33 undergraduate students from classes A of semester V in the 2022-2023 academic year. They are all enrolled in the English department at Bengkulu University. In this research, the data were collected using a questionnaire adopted from Izzah et al., (2020) through google forms consisting of 10 questions. Hereinafter, the data were analyzed using IBM SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Science) 26.0 program. The result showed that students’ perceptions of using TED Talks on public speaking were positive perspectives. Since the students are already aware of TED Talks from a previous course, students generally had positive perceptions of using TED Talks to improve listening skills

Abstract

This study investigated the types of translation techniques. This study used mixed methods research design. The data that obtained was the translation techniques. This approach chose because to investigate the techniques that were used by authors in translating abstract of National Accredited Journal and to find out the differences between techniques that were used by authors in translating abstract in high, medium, and low National Accredited Journal. Abstracts were obtained from the National Journal of education included in high (1 or 2 index), medium (3 or 4 index), and low (5 or 6 index). The instrument of the research was Document Analysis Table. To collect the data, the researcher examined the cultural terms for both the original language and the target language. For analyzing the data, the researcher used 4 steps data reduction, data display, drawing conclusion, and data coding. The result portrayed that established equivalent with 29 data (25.2%) was most dominant. It is probably because the translator chose to use an already established and equivalent term in the target language. In translating the terms and sentence the result described that in High Level and Middle Level, there has been found more various translation technique than abstract in Low Level National Accredited Journal.

Abstract

Teachers and students play a key role in the successful integration of ICT into learning English. ICT-based learning will only succeed if teachers and students have a positive attitude towards practice. In this context, an empirical picture of teacher-student perceptions is essential as a basis for integrating ICT into the learning process. The aims of this study are to explore and analyse students' and teachers’ perceptions, students and teachers’ challenges, and benefits for teaching and learning toward the use of ICT in Teaching English at BTA 70 course To explore and analyse students’ perceptions toward the use of ICT in Teaching English at BTA 70 course. This study was mixed method study. This study used survey research in conducting the research exactly cross-sectional survey. There are 416 students and 15 teachers who became samples in this study and to get the sample The writer used purposive random sampling. The writer used a questionnaire for collecting the data. They are closed ended questionnaires adopted in Chainda A. M (2011). The results of this research, the students’ perception showed there positive aspects for students such as making students can share information, enhance students’ learning, and doing science experiments safely, for negative aspects consuming students’ time and irrelevant information which students got on the internet. And students’ attitude showed the students agree the use of ICT is effective in learning. Then, The use of ICT gave students obstacles where the obstacles became the challenges for students itself. The challenges for the students themselves, irrelevant information and time management are challenges for the students in learning by using ICT. It can be concluded if there are benefits of ICT in the learning process. Such as, ICT helps the students to improve, and also the students can learn individually. Abstract

Short stories are considered an excellent and highly significant teaching approach in elementary level teaching and learning as they provide a useful and unique learning resource and encourage language acquisition, progress and personal interest. This study aims to better understand how primary school pupils see vocabulary development. A mixed-methods study was conducted with thirty sixth graders at SD IT Cahaya Rabbani Kepahiang to gather both quantitative and qualitative data. To collect quantitative data, a questionnaire was employed, and to collect qualitative data, interviews were used. Using SPSS and Excel, the data were descriptively examined. Because short stories are engaging, practical, and simple to grasp, 80% of SD IT Cahaya Rabbani Kepahiang students highly agree and believe that using short story media can help students learn more words in English. The study's conclusions indicate that students are open to using short stories to broaden their vocabulary and find them engaging. Therefore, English teachers should employ short stories to assist students learn vocabulary. The instructor should be mindful of the significance of selecting short stories wisely and doing it in a way that is both engaging and amusing. The selected short stories must also pay attention to the interests, needs, and skills of students. In this study, only a subset of children from the same school participated. Information was only collected once, through questionnaires and interviews. As a result, only students in the same school can use the findings. Additional research should include more people from various institutions to provide more thorough results. Additionally, it is possible to investigate the effectiveness of using short stories to help students expand their vocabulary by using different research methodologies like experimental or action research.Keywords: Students’ perception; short story; vocabulary

Abstract

The rapid advancement of AI technologies, particularly ChatGPT, is reshaping the educational landscape. Understanding how students perceive these technologies is crucial for their effective integration into academic environments. This study aims to investigate students' perceptions of ChatGPT's role in supporting academic tasks, such as learning, research, and assignments at the University of Bengkulu. A descriptive survey design was employed, utilizing structured questionnaires based on the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). Responses from 75 students across various faculties were analyzed using descriptive statistics and ANOVA to explore perceptions regarding ChatGPTs usefulness, ease of use, and ethical considerations. The results indicate that students view ChatGPT as moderately useful, particularly for saving time on assignments and research tasks. However, there are ethical concerns, notably about plagiarism, and a demand for better training on the ethical use of AI. ChatGPT is perceived as a valuable tool in enhancing academic efficiency, but there is a need for comprehensive training to address ethical challenges in its use.

Abstract

Grammar is one of the keys to learning a language and is not easy to do. Meanwhile, factors that influence English Learning do not only come from the teacher, but also from the students’ attitudes. One habit that can be a consideration in helping students master grammar is listening to English songs. The objective of this study was to determine if there is a relationship between students' habit of listening to English songs and their grammar mastery. This research was carried out at SMA Negeri 6 Kota Bengkulu, which was conducted on the twelfth-grade students of SMA Negeri 6 Kota Bengkulu involving 31 students in the academic year 2021/2022. The instruments of this research were a questionnaire on listening habits and a grammar test. Research findings showed that the students had high intensity on listening to English songs also became one of their habits. On the other side, the grammar mastery of the students on average was categorized as low. Only a few students were considered to be high level in grammar mastery. Furthermore, the Pearson Product Moment correlation test revealed no connection between listening to English songs habits and grammar mastery.

Abstract

The methodology section is one of the most important aspects of a master thesis because it describes how the research was done and what method and procedure was taken in that research. This research aimed to discover the most common grammatical problems and possible causes of grammatical issues in master theses written by English education postgraduate program students at Bengkulu University, especially in the methodology section. This study used a mixed method, namely qualitative and quantitative. Most of the grammatical problems were investigated quantitatively, and the causes of grammatical problems were studied qualitatively. The corpus of this study was 20 master theses written by English education postgraduate program students who graduated in 2021. The findings showed that the most frequent grammatical problems found in the methodology section of the master theses were incorrect verbs, 38,60% or 44 times, which were dominated by tense confusion and subject-verb agreement, which confused the reader. Further, they also often lack the necessary syntactic connections between the verb and the nearest subject. The cause of the grammatical problems found in the methodology section of the theses was carelessness, first language interference, and translation. Carelessness becomes the highest possible cause of the grammatical problems committed by students. The conclusion of this research provides information about the most frequent grammatical problems and possible causes in the master theses of methodology section.
