Abstract

Globally, there is a drive toward ensuring energy efficiency in all aspect of production operations and power supply systems. Industries are the backbone of our modern word, and a significant percentage of industrial operations are motor driven. Three Phase Induction Motor is massively deployed in industries due to its ruggedness, reasonable cost and ease of maintenance. The energy efficiency of the induction motor is affected by the internal configurations of the motor and the nature of the supply. Power supply fluctuations result in power quality issues and its attendant negative effects on equipment operation. This research, studies the cost and performance implication of the effects of balanced over voltage, balanced voltage, balanced under voltage and unbalance voltage on the operation of the three phase induction motor using the peculiarities of Nigeria. The result shows that, there is an increase in operational cost due to increased energy loss in the windings as a result of voltage variations from the balanced state, with balanced over voltage operation showing more cost severity among the voltage variations considered.

Abstract

Liquid flow and level control are essential requirements in various industries, such as paper manufacturing, petrochemical industries, waste management, and others. Controlling the liquids flow and levels in such industries is challenging due to the existence of nonlinearity and modeling uncertainties of the plants. This paper presents a method to control the liquid level in a second tank of a coupled-tank plant through variable manipulation of a water pump in the first tank. The optimum controller parameters of this plant are calculated using radial basis function neural network metamodel. A time-varying nonlinear dynamic model is developed and the corresponding linearized perturbation models are derived from the nonlinear model. The performance of the developed optimized controller using metamodeling is compared with the original large space design. In addition, linearized perturbation models are derived from the nonlinear dynamic model with time-varying parameters.

Abstract

Inflation is a benchmark of a country's economic development. Inflation is very influential on various things, so forecasting inflation to know on upcoming inflation will impact positively. There are various methods used to perform forecasting, one of which is the fuzzy time series forecasting with maximum results. Fuzzy logical relationships (FLR) model is a very good in doing forecasting. However, there are some parameters that the value needs to be optimised. Interval is a parameter which is highly influence toward forecasting result. The utilizing optimization with hybrid automatic clustering and particle swarm optimization (ACPSO). Automatic clustering can do interval formation with just the right amount. While the PSO can optimise the value of each interval and it is providing maximum results. This study proposes the improvement in find the solution using auto-speed acceleration algorithm. Auto-speed acceleration algorithm can find a global solution which is hard to reach by the PSO and time of computation is faster. The results of the acquired solutions can provide the right interval so that the value of the FLR can perform forecasting with maximum results.

Abstract

When there are constraints on the resources-equipment, manpower and time-to conduct speech intelligibility tests, the most reliable or significant SI assessor for many different types of rooms is always sought for. The purpose of this study was to determine the most significant speech intelligibility assessor in four medium classrooms. The speech intelligibility assessors tested were RT60, C50, D50, and STIPA. The data were acquired by means of sound recorder that recorded six Malay words spoken by a trained male speaker, in four medium classrooms. The recorded speech signals were analyzed by DIRAC software. The data of four speech intelligibility assessors have to be normalized before it can be analyzed by AHP. In conclusion, C50 has shown the most consistent prediction of speech intelligibility in all sampled classrooms. On the other hand, as the room gets larger, RT60 becomes significant for determining speech intelligibility in these sampled classrooms.

Abstract

K-Support Vector Nearest Neighbor (K-SVNN) is one of methods for training data reduction that works only for binary class. This method uses Left Value (LV) and Right Value (RV) to calculate Significant Degree (SD) property. This research aims to modify the K-SVNN for multi-class training data reduction problem by using entropy for calculating SD property. Entropy can measure the impurity of data class distribution, so the selection of the SD can be conducted based on the high entropy. In order to measure performance of the modified K-SVNN in mango leaf classification, experiment is conducted by using multi-class Support Vector Machine (SVM) method on training data with and without reduction. The experiment is performed on 300 mango leaf images, each image represented by 260 features consisting of 256 Weighted Rotation- and Scale-invariant Local Binary Pattern features with average weights (WRSI-LBP-avg) texture features, 2 color features, and 2 shape features. The experiment results show that the highest accuracy for data with and without reduction are 71.33% and 71.00% respectively. It is concluded that K-SVNN can be used to reduce data in multi-class classification problem while preserve the accuracy. In addition, performance of the modified K-SVNN is also compared with two other methods of multi-class data reduction, i.e. Condensed Nearest Neighbor Rule (CNN) and Template Reduction KNN (TRKNN). The performance comparison shows that the modified K-SVNN achieves better accuracy.

Abstract

Most scientific publishers encourage authors to provide keyphrases on their published article. Hence, the need to automatize keyphrase extraction is increased. However, it is not a trivial task considering keyphrase characteristics may overlap with the non-keyphrase’s. To date, the accuracy of automatic keyphrase extraction approaches is still considerably low. In response to such gap, this paper proposes two contributions. First, a feature called fact-based sentiment is proposed. It is expected to strengthen keyphrase characteristics since, according to manual observation, most keyphrases are mentioned in neutral-to-positive sentiment. Second, a combination of supervised and unsupervised approach is proposed to take the benefits of both approaches. It will enable automatic hidden pattern detection while keeping candidate importance comparable to each other. According to evaluation, fact-based sentiment is quite effective for representing keyphraseness and semi-supervised approach is considerably effective to extract keyphrases from scientific articles.

Abstract

A novel miniaturized multiband, single-feed microstrip patch antenna is presented in this paper for WLAN and WiMAX applications. Both size reduction and multiband are obtained by etching the Multiple Complementary Split Ring Resonators (MC-SRR) on the ground plane of the normal patch antenna. At first, the normal patch antenna produces a single band of 5.15 GHz; 200 MHz (5.0500~5.2499). Subsequently, a Single Circular Split Ring Resonator (SC-SRR) is etched on the ground plane and produces a triple band of: 3.25 GHz; 288 MHz (3.1085~3.3964), 4.5 GHz; 101.3 MHz (4.4488~4.5501), and 5.22 GHz; 220 MHz (5.1191~5.3400) and Double Single Circular Split Ring Resonator (DC-MCSRR) with: 2.99 GHz; 60.7 MHz (2.9574~3.0181), 3.57 GHz; 324.7 MHz (3.4065~3.7312), and 5.1413 GHz; 115.4 MHz (5.0817~5.1971). The working bandwidths cover the desired frequency bands of WLAN 5.2 GHz and WiMAX 3.3/3.5 GHz. The proposed (MC-SRR) antenna can be employed to wireless communication systems due to its simplicity in design, compactness and miniaturization.

Abstract

Every child is special and has her/his own unique potential. Identifying child’s potential in early age is important for teaching purpose since every child has difference intelligence and interest. Therefore children’s teaching and learning process should be delivered based on child’s interest and intelligence, instead of forcing children to excel in every subject. We propose our research to identify child’s intelligence by designing fuzzy expert system. The system works based on several input data of children’s multiple intelligences. The fuzzy expert system is developed using 25 input variables and resulted in 9 output variables. The system classifies the result based on 9 types of intelligence in human, where each exhibits different level. We produce 81 rules with fuzzy set of three different levels value (high, moderate, or low) for every kind of intelligence. The result of this research is very useful to help parents and teachers for determining their method of teaching based on children’s potential.
