Abstract

Several records of violence during student body elections in higher institutions of learning can be found dating back to the 1988 Abu crisis. The causal factors are multifaceted, involving both internal factors within the institution and external factors, and interest parties like main stream politicians. Suspicion of the possibility of rigging during a planned election can trigger pre-election violence, while alleged rigging during the election or the vote counting process is the major cause of election unrest during student government elections. The voting process is typically manual, and it is done through the use of ballot boxes and papers. This is error prone, inefficient and susceptible to rigging. Preventing mistrust-induced election violence requires the deployment of a trustworthy alternative to the paper ballot system. In this study, an electronic voting system is developed using Visual Basic and Microsoft Access Database. The application performs voter authentication by verifying a pre-issued pin which is unique for each voter. The system is accurate and engages the participation and login of agents who are representatives of the candidates’ contesting for various offices thereby building trust in the process.

Abstract

Tropospheric scintillation can become a significant impairment in satellite communication systems, especially in tropical regions with frequencies higher than 10 GHz, the attenuation is dramatically affecting the scintillation. This work concentrates on those aspects in equatorial Johor Bahru, Malaysia, based on a one-year Ku-band propagation measurement campaign, utilizing the equipment of Direct Broadcast Receiver (DBR) and Automatic Weather Station (AWS). This study investigates the relationship between wet scintillation and rain attenuation using experimental measurement and concentrate on the probability density function (PDF) of different scintillation parameters. From the results, it is concluded that wet scintillation intensity increases with rain attenuation. Thus, the relationship can be phrased by linear equations or power-law. The PDFs of wet scintillation intensity, adapted to a given rain attenuation level, are found lognormally distributed, leading to selection of method for determining the relation between conditional PDFs and rain attenuation.

Abstract

 In the future wireless systems, non-orthogonal multiple-access (NOMA) with partial relay selection scheme is considered as developing research topic. In this paper, dual-hop relaying systems is deployed for NOMA, in which the signal is transfered with the assistance of decode-and-forward (DF) scheme. This paper presents exact expressions for outage probability over independent Rayleigh fading channels, and two partial relay selection schemes are provided. Using matching analytical result and Monte-Carlo method, we introduce forwarding strategy selection for fixed user allocation and exactness of derived formula is checked. The presented simulations confirm the the advantage of such considered NOMA, and the effectiveness of the proposed forwarding strategy.

Abstract

Urban areas have been perceived as the source of environmental problems. To avoid improper land use allocation, negative sprawl effects, and other sources of environmental degradation, city planners need tools for simulating and optimizing their proposed plans. This study proposed a “what-if” analysis model that could help the planners in assessing and simulating their urban plans in Bekasi City, Indonesia. As part of Jakarta Metropolitan Area which exhibited a “post-suburbanization” phenomenon, this city faces many problems because of its high urban growth. Since the urban area has higher land use density than the rural area, especially on built-up class, it needs more consideration when allocating this kind of land use. Because each type of built-up class influences another type, it is difficult to allocate manually. Therefore, this study proposed a land-use optimization application to help planners finding the appropriate land use. This study showed that a model with simulation and optimization can be used to handle urban growth.

Abstract

It is necessary to develop an automated method to detect damaged road because manually monitoring the road condition is not practical. Many previous studies had demonstrated that the vibration-based technique has potential to detect damages on roads. This research explores the potential use of Artificial Neural Network (ANN) for detecting road anomalies based on vehicle accelerometer data. The vehicle is equipped with a smart-phone that has a 3D accelerometer and geo-location sensors. Then, the vehicle is used to scan road network having several road anomalies, such as, potholes, speedbump, and expansion joints. An ANN model consisting of three layers is developed to classify the road anomalies. The first layer is the input layer containing six neurons. The numbers of neurons in the hidden layer is varied between one and ten neurons, and its optimal number is sought numerically. The prediction accuracy of 84.9% is obtained by using three neurons in conjunction with the maximum acceleration data in x, y, and z-axis. The accuracy increases slightly to 86.5%, 85.2%, and 85.9% when the dominant frequencies in x, y, and z-axis, respectively, are taken into account beside the previous data.

Abstract

Effort estimation becomes a crucial part in software development process because false effort estimation result can lead to delayed project and affect the successful of a project. This research proposes a model of effort estimation for web-based mobile application developed using object oriented approach. In the proposed model, functional size measurement of object oriented based web application named OOmFPWeb, web metric and mobile characteristic for web-based mobile application size measurement are combnined. The estimation process is done by using mamdani fuzzy logic method. To evaluate the proposed model, the comparison between OOmFPWeb as the variable that affect effort estimation for web-based mobile application and the proposed model are performed. The evaluation result shows that effort estimation for web-based mobile application with the proposed model is better than just using OOmFPWeb.

Abstract

This work proposes a method based on a mixed integer nonlinear non-convex programming model to solve the multistage transmission expansion planning (TEP). A meta-heuristic algorithm by the means of differential evolution algorithm (DEA) is employed as an optimization tool. An AC load flow model is used in solving the multistage TEP problem, where accurate and realistic results can be obtained. Furthermore, the work considers the constraints checking and system violation such as real and power generation limits, possible number of lines added, thermal limits and bus voltage limits. The proposed technique is tested on well known and realistic test systems such as the IEEE 24 bus-system and the Colombian 93-bus system. The method has shown high capability in considering the active and reactive power in the same manner and solving the TEP problem. The method produced improved good results in a fast convergence time for the test systems.

Abstract

This paper compares two commonly used functions, the Weibull and Rayleigh distribution functions, for fitting a measured wind speed probability distribution at a given location over a certain period. The monthly and annual measured wind speed data at 84 m height for the years have been statistically analyzed for the country with a large capacity - Kitka. The analysis is made in the case of the implementation of all the predicted capacity of wind turbines and by virtue of the probability of power distribution. The Weibull and Rayleigh probability distribution functions have been determined and their parameters have been identified. The average wind speed and the wind power density have been estimated using both distribution functions and compared those estimated from the measured probability distribution function. The Weibull distribution function fits the wind speed variation better than Rayleigh distribution function. The average wind speed was found to be 4.5 m/s and the average wind power density was 114.54 W/m According to results, we can conclude that such a distribution of winds in this region yields an appropriate average value of wind power.

Abstract

The multistep approach involving combination of techniques is referred as motion estimation. The proposed approach is an adaptive control system to measure the motion from starting point to limit of search. The motion patterns are used to analyze and avoid stationary regions of image. The algorithm proposed is robust efficient and the calculations justify its advantages. The motivation of the work is to maximize the encoding speed and visual quality with the help of motion vector algorithm. In this work a hardware model is developed in which a frame of pictures are captured and sent via serial port to the system. MATLAB simulation tool is used to detect the motion among the picture frame. Once any motion is detected that signal is sent to the hardware which will give the appropriate sign accordingly. This system is developed on two platforms (hardware as well software) to estimate and measure the motion vectors.

Abstract

In this article, we have proposed a new control of a PV system connected to the grid. The goal is to reduce current and voltage harmonicsfor increasing the quality of delivered energy. First, we have modeled a PV panel. Then we have dimensioned the BOOST converter by finding L and C values. Next, we have used Perturb and Observe (P&O) Maximum Power Point Control (MPPT) to improve energy efficiency. Finally, We have developed a control of single-phase H-bridge inverter in order to eliminate the 3rd,5th,7th and 9th harmonics order, and added an LCLTo connect the PV inverter to the grid, an LCL betweenthe inverter and the grid. Theperformance of the proposed system was tested by computing spectrum and THD usingMatlab/Simulink software. The proposed architecture provides better Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) which satisfy the EN50160 requirement the THD must be less than 4.66%. We found that THD was decreased from 61.93% to 0.04%.
