Abstract

The effect of dry and heavy water absorption on the electrical breakdown of low-density poly ethylene film was investigated. The temperature rise of the sample was observed by thermograph until the electrical breakdown using    direct current ramp voltage. The conduction current of low-density poly ethylene film was also measured, and the result was then correlated with thermograph measurement. Meanwhile, the space charge distribution in asample was measured by the pulse electro-acoustic method. From the thermograph, the result can be seen that under the heavy water absorption, the sample was more dissipated than the dry condition. Then, the breakdown occurs at the lower value of the voltage application, but the higher conduction current. Furthermore, the pulse electric acoustic show that increases the charge injection to the sample in the heavy water absorption. Increased space charges associated with an increase in the current conduction and the formation of heating, which results in a thermal breakdown.

Abstract

Most of vehicle have the similar structures and designs. It is extremely complicated and difficult to identify and classify vehicle brands based on their structure and shape. As we requirea quick and reliable response, so vehicle logos are an alternative method of determining the type of a vehicle. In this paper, we propose a method for vehicle logo recognition based on feature  selection method in a hybrid way. Vehicle logo images are first characterized by histograms of oriented gradient descriptors and the final features vector are then applied feature selection method to reduce the irrelevant information. Moreover, we release a new benchmark dataset for vehicle logo recognition and retrieval task namely, VLR-40. The experimental results are evaluated on this database which show the efficiency of the proposed approach.

Abstract

This paper presents the co-simulation of the self-adjusting fuzzy PI controller to control a two-axes system. Each axis was driven by a permanent magnet linear synchronous motor (PMLSM). The position and speed controller used the fuzzy PI algorithm with parameters adjusted by a radial basis function neural network (RBFNN). The vector control was applied to the decoupled effect of the PMLSM. The field programmable gate array (FPGA) was used to control both axes of the system. The very high-speed integrated circuit-hardware description language (VHDL) was developed in the Quartus II software environment, provided by Altera, to analyze and synthesize designs. Firstly, the mathematical model of PMLSM and fuzzy PI was introduced. Secondly, the RBFNN adjusted the knowledge base of the fuzzy PI. Thirdly, the motion trajectory was introduced for testing the control algorithm. Fourthly, the implementation of the controller based on FPGA with the FSM method and the structure of co-simulation between Matlab/Simulink and ModelSim were set up. Finally, discussion about the results proved the effectiveness of the control system, determining the exact position and trajectory of the XY axis system. This research was successful in implementing a two-motor controller within one chip.

Abstract

Dish-Stirling unit and photovoltaic panels are the premier technologies available to generate off-grid solar energy. The major issue for both systems is in terms of producing output power. Air-Brayton cycle was utilized asan engine by converting the thermal energy to electricity. Micro gas turbine (MGT) has been recognized as one of the viable alternatives compared to Stirling engines, where it represents a state-of-art parabolic dish engine specifically in turbine gas technology. Hence, the microgas turbine is a technology that is capable of controlling low carbon while providing electricity in off-grid regions. MGT uses any gas as its input like natural gas, bio gas and others. Micro gas turbine has advantages for its high expansion ratio and less moving components. Compared to competing for diesel generators, the electricity costs from hybrid solar units were reduced between 10% and 43%, where  as specific CO2 emissions reduced by 20-35%. MGT provides advantages over photovoltaic systems such as the inherent ability to hybridize the systems with hydrocarbon fuels to produce electricity around the clock, and the ability to operate more effectively in very hot climates with photovoltaic performance degradation over the life time of the  system. Hybrid solar micro gas-turbines are cost-effective, eco-friendly and pollution free as they can work by burning any gas like natural gas, landfill gasa and others. This paper presented the controls contained in the MGT-dish system consisted of temperature control, fuel flow control, speed and acceleration control. Aconceptual design of the 25kW MGT-dish system was also covered.

Abstract

The clustering approach is considered as a vital method for many fields suchas machine learning, pattern recognition, image processing, information retrieval, data compression, computer graphics, and others.Similarly, it hasgreat significance in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) by organizing thesensor nodes into specific clusters. Consequently, saving energy and prolonging network lifetime, which is totally dependent on the sensor’s battery, that is considered asa major challenge in the WSNs. Fuzzyc-means (FCM) is one of classification algorithm, which is widely used in literature for this purpose in WSNs. However, according to the nature of random nodes deployment manner, on certain occasions, this situation forces this algorithm to produce unbalanced clusters, which adversely affects the lifetime of the network. To overcome this problem, a new clustering method called FCM-CMhas been proposed by improving the FCM algorithm to form balanced clustersfor random nodes deployment. The improvement is conductedby integrating the FCM with a centralized mechanism(CM).The proposed method will be evaluated based on four new parameters. Simulation result shows that our proposed algorithm is more superior to FCM by producing balanced clustersin addition to increasing the balancing of the intra-distances of the clusters, which leads to energy conservation and prolonging network lifespan.

Abstract

The complexity of multimedia contents is significantly increasing in the current world. This leads to an exigent demand for developing highly effective systems tosatisfy human needs. Until today, handwritten signature considered an important means that is used in banks and businesses to evidence identity, so there are many works triedto develop a method for recognition purpose. This paper introduced an efficient technique for offline signature recognition depending on extracting the local feature by utilizing the haar wavelet subbands and energy. Three different setsof features are utilized by partitioning the signature image into non overlapping blocks where different block sizes are used. CEDAR signature database is used asa dataset for testing purpose. The results achieved by this technique indicate a high performance in signature recognition.

Abstract

With the increased use of computers, electronic devices and human interaction with computer in the broad spectrum of human life, the role of controlling emotions and increasing positive emotional states becomes more prominent. If a user's negative emotions increase, his/her efficiency will decrease greatly as well. Research has shown that colors are to be considered as one of the most influential basic functions in sight, identification, interpretation, perception and senses. It can be said that colors have impact on individuals' emotional states and can change them. In this paper, by learning the reactions of users with different personality types against each color, communication between the user's emotional states and personality and colors were modeled for the variable "emotional control". For the sake of learning, we used a memory-based system with the user’s interface color changing in accordance with the positive and negative experiences of users with different personalities. The end result of comparison of the testing methods demonstrated the superiority of memory-based learning in all three parameters of emotional control, enhancement of positive emotional states and reduction of negative emotional states. Moreover, the accuracy of memory- based learning method was almost 70 percent.

Abstract

There are many methods for identifying the stability of complex dynamic systems. Routh and Hurwitz’s criterion is one of the earliest and commonly used analytical tools analysing the stability of dynamic systems. However, it requires tedious and lengthy derivations of all components of the Routh array to solve the stability problem. Therefore, it is not a simple method to define analytically, stability boundaries for the coefficients of the system characteristic equation. The proposed brand-new criterion is an effective alternaztive technique in identifying stabilityhigher-order linear time-invariant dynamic system that binds the coefficients of the system characteristic polynomial at the stability boundaries by means of an additional single constantk. It defines the necessary and sufficient conditions for the absolute stability of higher-order dynamic systems. It also allows the analysing of the system’s precise marginal stabilityor marginal instability condition when the roots are relocated on imaginary jω-axis of s-plane. The criterion proposed bythe authors, in contrast to Routh criteria, simplifies the identification of maximum and minimum stability limits for any coefficient of the higher-order characteristic equation significantly. The derived in the paperstability boundary formulas for the polynomial coefficients are successfully used for the proportional integral derivative (PID) controller with single or multiple gains selections in closed-loop control system.
